Saturday, April 9

Cowboy had physical therapy Thursday and Friday and that is it.  He does really well if he uses his cane and wears his athletic shoes and the therapist really encouraged him to do that.

Yesterday I learned that we can get a "Durable Power of Attorney" done at the army base so we headed over there and took care of that.  This document is required for me to sign anything for the VA, a nursing home and to handle financial transactions.  We know there will be a point where Cowboy will not even be able to sign his name and when he certainly would not know what he was signing.  If you wait until then it takes getting a lawyer and going to court to have them declared unable to handle their affairs.  This is much better in every way.

The VA called late yesterday and we now have three appointments for evaluations to see if a change can be made to his disability rating.  The process has begun.  I don't know how someone who was working could handle all the things involved in this journey, even if they had day care.  I have read an article or two about caregivers and that it is a full time job.  They are right.

This morning after breakfast we went to the store for milk and water softener salt.  By the time we were done he was tired.  He is sleeping now.

I am beginning to feel a little more in control.  Various things are moving along and I am gathering all the information needed to make the right decisions for him.  Still have to visit a couple of dementia care facilities for comparison.   There are three in our city but we know they will cost more than the insurance will cover.  On the other hand it would be a lot closer and may be better.  Still figuring that out.
