Friday, December 28

It is still cold but today would have beautiful if the wind had not been blowing so much.

I went to see Cowboy yesterday for about 4 hours.  First, I went and got the oil changed on the car and then head over to see him.  He was in a good humor.  He just mostly watches TV but he had a fresh pair of clothes on and seemed OK.  I brought him a longer cord for the telephone and some pads for the bottom of his new recliner so it wouldn't move about.

He had smothered steak, scalloped potatoes, bread and butter, stewed tomatoes and mince meat pie for lunch.  I think he may gain some more weight on this kind of diet.  Made me feel very inadequate in my preparation of meals at home.  He ate every bite.  It smelled really good and he gave me a bit of the pie.  I am very impressed with the meals they serve.

This morning I packed up the car with some food and some clothes that I don't need and that he won't need and took them to a local charity.  I went looking for a twin size quilt for his bed.  Came up empty.  The only twin size things available seem to be for children.  Found several nice looking quilts but only in queen and king.  May decide to just reduce the size of the one he has.  Still thinking on that.

I also  bought some Christmas things for 70 and 80 % off and will pack them away for next year.  Went to WalMart and got some things and headed home.

Talked to a neighbor for a few minutes.  It is interesting how concerned everyone is with my being alone.  Although I have mentioned a few times that I have never been alone before I must  qualify that with some things.  When Cowboy was in the military he was often gone for weeks at a time and after he retired and went into retail he worked very long hours and I often didn't seem much of him.  And then my job required some travel and I spent a number of nights alone in motels when out of town.

I was really trying to say that this is different because he probably will never come home and I am looking at the rest of my life without a companion to share my bed and my days.  Many women do this and I know I am up to it but it is still unknown territory.

I am so grateful that Cowboy is adjusting so well to his new environment and seems quite content.  He is eating well, is cheerful and seems comfortable. in his new surroundings.  How can I wish for more?
