Thursday, March 28

A lot of my neighbors had hail damage from the storm the other night so I called my insurance guy and ask them to check mine just to be safe.  He is coming tomorrow.

Took the pup to the groomer Tuesday and went and shopped a little bit.  I bought one of those "zero gravity" chairs for the patio.  It was half off and then I had a 30%  off coupon.  I had wanted one for a while but didn't want to pay for it, but this made it pretty cheap.

Wednesday I had my last follow up appointment on my eye surgery.  All is fine.  I am not trying to get my eyelashes out of my eyes all the time now.  Glad I did it.

I took the dog and we went to see Cowboy today.  I got there around 10.  Had a 10:30 appointment with some of the staff.  They do a review every 90 days.  Went well.  I did tell them I felt they needed to do a better job of making sure that Cowboy takes out his teeth (partial) at night and cleans them and brushes his teeth.  I have been generally pleased with his care.  Good meeting.

When I got back to the unit I found Cowboy and about three other people including one of the staff,  feeding the dog cheerios.  I see a tummy ache in her future. ... and then at lunch this fellow named Pete put some of his lunch on a saucer and put it on the floor.  I caught the dog just in time.  I think I am going to need to avoid taking her and staying over lunch.  These guys seem to think my chubby pup isn't getting enough to eat.

The social worker said they are starting a support group for the wives and daughters of the memory care patients.  It will be on a Tuesday afternoon.   That works well for me since I normally go see Cowboy on Tuesdays anyway.

My eldest grandson contacted me yesterday and said he is coming for the weekend.   Hopefully his plans will work out this time.  He is bringing his girlfriend for me to meet.

Monday, March 25

What a day.

I met up with the dulcimer group this morning at 9AM and led a caravan of  cars packed with fellow musicians to the home.

Everyone stayed together and we arrived right on time.  There were 15 of us, including dulcimer players, a string bass player, an accordion, a flute and then some of the dulcimer players play the penny whistle, the harmonica and various percussion instruments.  We even have a washboard

Cowboy got to come to both sessions and he really enjoyed himself and of course all of the players know and love him.  I showed some of them his room and pics and such.

We played for the general patients in the AM, had lunch and then played in the memory unit after lunch.  Everyone had a great time.  I had planned on staying for an open house they had this evening but about 3:30 I realized that I was too tired and needed to drive home and not stay.  I was just worn out.

It is such a joy to have these people as friends.  How many people would take off at 9 in the AM, drive to another city, play for free for a group of old men, not once but twice and then drive home.  It is all out of love and caring.  A lot of them talked with the residents and it went really well.  Thanks to all of them.

I got home about 4:30 and only managed to throw a lean pocket into the microwave and pour myself a glass of wine.  I don't know why I thought I could stay into the evening and socialize and then drive home about dark.  Would have been just too much.

I am taking the pup to the groomer tomorrow and then plan to take her to see Cowboy on Thursday.  Am trying to get back on my regular schedule.

On Saturday I went to dulcimer practice and then worked around the house.

On Sunday I got a good deal of the pricing done on the stuff in the garage.  Had planned on washing down the patio but it was too cool and way too windy.  Maybe tomorrow.

Friday, March 22

I realized today how often it is the little things that you remember.  Our book club read a book about the history of the Comanche.  They spent a lot of time camping in Palo Duro canyon in the Texas panhandle.  I grew up in that area and often spent time crawling around in the caves and splashing in the creek there and so the book created all kinds of memories I thought long forgotten.

One other place mentioned in the book was the Wichita mountains in the SW part of Oklahoma.  I spent part of my early adulthood there and met Cowboy at Ft. Sill.  We went out to the mountains on about our second time together and drove to the top of Mt. Scott.  Cowboy picked a wildflower and put it in my hair.  He has always been kind of a silly romantic that way and one of the things that endears him to me.  I remember the rocks were covered with lichen and the lichen was covered with ladybugs.  We had such a great time that day.

Today when I went to see him we sat out outside and watched several birds taking a bath in a puddle from the rains last night.  He was so enthralled and enjoying it so much, it reminded me of how he loves such things and enjoys just watching the world go by..

I had lunch today with some folks from the neighborhood at a place called the "Dead Fish Grill".  It was in a town near where Cowboy is so I had lunch with friends and then drove on over to see him.  Beautiful weather.  We sat outside most of the time I was there.  He walked some but he seems to be having more and more difficulty getting around.

The bird feeder I put out is finally attracting birds.  I think the little guys there today were wrens, small brown and really quite svelte.  They definitely were enjoying the sunflower seeds.

I have a picture of Cowboy that I took during that courtship period.  I have sitting next to my computer and look at it every day.  He was one handsome guy.

Still have to clean the patio.  Maybe tomorrow......

Wednesday, March 20

The first day of spring !  It sure didn't seem like it.  Last night we had a bad hailstorm.  Since the tables on my patio are topped with glass it was very noisy.  pop..pop..bang..bang..pop for quite a long time.  Our poor pooch was totally freaked out.  I don't think she has experienced hail in her lifetime.  It made for a night with limited sleep.

Got out this morning and checked the roof and the things that might break but everything seems to be OK.  I had put some little ceramic things in the front flower beds just a few days ago and was afraid they would be smashed but they were fine.

Monday I had a session with a personal trainer who showed me how to use some of the machines and worked with me on some floor exercises.  The "bike" I rode was fun.  You have to avoid others and control the direction, speed, etc. so is more fun than just peddling.  I am really interested in improving my physical health.

I also talked to the VA Monday about this silly problem with getting paper checks.  It is a long involved story but bottom line it appears what I have done for the last 6 months is wrong and have to call a "Fidiciary Office" in Lincoln, Neb.  I did so and she told me she has made the change; HOWEVER, it is too late to not received some kind of plastic debit card this coming month.  Supposedly it will then be a direct deposit the following month.  Why do I not believe any of these people anymore?  I called the treasury office since they had sent me a rather terse, warning letter to get this done.  The lady there said, no I wouldn't get a card, but the same paper check I have been getting for about 9 months now.  It will be interesting to see which one of these nice ladies is right.

Tuesday  I had planned to price the pile for the garage sale but after going to get a haircut and going to the grocery and doing 4 loads of laundry I never even got out there.  Oh well.

I got up this morning, had a bowl of cereal and headed over to see Cowboy.  I changed my usual Tuesday-Thursday schedule this week because of a luncheon near where Cowboy is on Friday.   Went today and will go again Friday afternoon.

He was in his room watching TV.  We visited a bit and read the paper.  I stayed and had lunch with him.  He ate very little and then said he needed to use the bathroom so we headed back to his room.  He is very quiet today.  He laid down for a nap and I came on home.

Once home I  surveyed my patio and realized I needed to hose it down again.  Am going to wait until it dries out and then can sweep a lot of the debris off.

Tomorrow I have book club and some errands.  It is cooler since the front came through and really quite nice.

Sunday, March 17

Rats !  I missed my friends coming through on Friday.  They needed to get closer to home on Friday and my schedule just didn't work out.  I am hoping to go visit them all next month.  Here's hoping.

The band drove to the home on Friday and played a "set" in the memory unit in the morning and then had lunch with Cowboy.  We had about 15 or so folks come to hear us play but the other residents can be in their rooms and still hear the music.  The band members and I spent some time talking with the residents and a couple of the spouses that were there visiting.  One of our ladies was talking to Herman and told him that her first husband was named Herman.  He joked "Maybe I am him !"  Some of these fellows are a joy to visit with and others are just too far into their own world.

We had catfish and trimmings for lunch and it was very good.  In the afternoon we played for the regular nursing home.  At first it didn't look like we would have many folks but as time went by more and more arrived. One of the aides brought Cowboy over for the second "set" and even served him a beer.  About 2:30 a motorcycle group that comes once a month arrived, beer and chips were served and it was quite a party.  There was a fellow in the motorcycle group with a great voice and he sang "Danny Boy" and a couple of other songs with us.  We had a great time.  Long day, but we came home tired and happy.

The motorcycle group were local folks that ride with the Patriot Guard and the Christian Motorcycle Assoc.

Saturday was busy.  We had an emergency drill on Saturday AM that included members of the Emergency Management Committee, the sub-committees, the Citizens Band Radio group, the Citizens on Patrol group (all based in our retirement community), the local police and EMS folks and some of the management of our community.  I used to be deeply involved in the committee but now am a volunteer.  There were also about 60 folks who volunteered to be "victims".  It went very well.  I am proud to be a part of the effort.

I then dashed to the dulcimer practice since this group is planning on going to Cowboy's home on the 25th.  Needed to be sure I could answer any questions that might come up and find out where things stood.

I went to see Cowboy today.  He was watching TV in the common area.  We looked at the paper and  visited a bit.  I stayed and had lunch with him.  He was very talkative today.  Was telling me about this resident and that one.  Apparently some fellow threw his liquid medicine this morning and Cowboy ended up with some of it on him so he had to be changed.  He wasn't upset about it, just told me about it.

After lunch he didn't want to go outside so we went back to his room.  He went to his bed rather than his chair and I asked him if he wanted a nap.  He said yes, so I made him comfy and came on home.

A friend and band member showed me a better route to the home that avoids the interstate.  I took it home and it didn't seem to take an longer and was much more pleasant.  I think that will be my new normal for driving there (unless I have an errand that requires being in town).

Thursday, March 14

I went to lunch with some lady friends on Monday.  We went to LaMadelines.  It was good.  I had a spinach salad and a bowl of soup.  I always, always enjoy visiting with friends.

I went to see Cowboy on Tuesday.  He seemed rather subdued and about half there.  We didn't talk very much.  Watched some TV, looked at the paper and I left about lunchtime.  Had a meeting to go to in the PM.  I told him I wouldn't be back til Friday with the band and he seemed fine with it.

I spent Wednesday on a follow up for the doctor who worked on my eyes last week and then met with a personal traner.  I plan to try to add some gym time to my routine to help me regain a higher level of fitness and hopefully feel better.  I have already lost about 10 pounds since Cowboy went to the home but am hoping to lose about 25 more.  The trainer seemed to think this was not enough of a goal but I feel it is.

I had a very old and dear friend call me and she and couple of other lovely friends are planning on being through on Friday.  I am so looking forward to seeing them.

I spent today mailing birthday cards, cleaning the patio for my friends, taking care of a couple of errands and washing my hair.

Tomorrow the band is going to the home to play, both in the AM for the memory unit where Cowboy is, then lunch, then playing for the regular rest home in the PM.  I believe they will really enjoy it and am looking forward to doing it.

Sunday, March 11

I have been fighting a low grade headache since Thursday.  Probably from trying to sleep differently than I am accustomed to.  My eyes are healing and look fine(except they were pretty "yellow" this morning) and are not causing me any trouble at all.

Went to see Cowboy today.  I was running late.  With the time change, my not sleeping well, etc.  I slept in.  and my little pooch let me.

He was having lunch but wasn't eating much.  He seemed sort of out of it and only half there.  Got him to eat about half of his roast, a little bit of mashed potatoes and a bit of his roll.    Then he was ready to go to his room.

They had been working with him on his walking and had been shown how to completely stop, put on the brakes and catch his body up to the walker when it got ahead of him.  He did pretty good until we were almost back to his room and then he had trouble again.  It was like he forgot what he was supposed to do.

We had only been back in his room for maybe half an hour and he fell asleep.  I told him I thought I would leave but he asked me not to.  I watched him doze for a while and read a little bit.  We hugged and smooched a little bit and then I left so he could nap.

Got home and took the dog for a walk then caught up on some TV watching and reading.

I actually cooked myself a meal tonight.  I can only take a frozen meal some of the time.

Friday, March 8

I was laying in bed last night and I realized I had not posted in almost a week !  Shame on me.

When I saw Cowboy on Sunday he was having difficulty walking even with his walker.  The aide told me she would suggest they always have an aide help him.  He isn't going to ask so I am not sure how that will work.  Just keeping a close eye I guess.

I spent Monday putting together an ad and some pictures of all my sewing stuff to sell.  Had Bunco Monday night.  Always a good time.

When I saw Cowboy on Tuesday he was doing a little better using his walker.  I went over early and we participated in the morning individual exercises for the fellows who sit around in the common area.  They have them raise their arms, bench their limbs, etc.

The band practiced Tuesday afternoon.  We concentrated on what we are playing at the home next week.  That will be on the 15th.

I donated one of Cowboy's guitars to Kiwanis.  They are collecting musical instruments for the school music programs.  One guitar left in the house that is an inexpensive smaller one that I diddle with sometimes.  Can't do much.  Too much arthritis.

Wednesday morning I went to a town hall on slips and falls.  They had the EMS and some medical folks there to talk about ways to reduce your chances of falling.  It was interesting.

Wednesday afternoon I had a friend take me to the Dr and I had my eyes "revised" as they called it.  It was an office procedure under local to get the skin around the corners of my eyes from folding in and literally "rolling up" my lashes and causing irritation.  I will look like I have black eyes for a few days I guess.  He commented on how deep set my eyes are and how "thick" the lids are.  Have dealt with this my whole life.  The kids  used to call me "little Chinaman" when I was a little girl because when I grin my eyes are nearly closed.

Am staying home for a few days til I look a bit more normal.  It is allowing me to catch up on some little odds and ends so is not a bad thing.  I have to sleep on my back for a few days and propped up so am not sleeping so great but I feel fine.  No pain or anything.

Didn't go to the home yesterday as I usually do on Thursdays.  Vision is a little blurry (normal) and did have some pain medication yesterday so better not to get on the interstate.

Called Cowboy and he is fine.

Saturday, March 2

I got up this morning and started cleaning the house.  When these workmen grind tile it just leaves this grit all over everything !  He had put all the stuff in the bathroom in the tub.  Should have moved it to another room.  Everything that was in the tub, plus the tub was heavily covered in the dust from the tile.

The bathroom looks beautiful.  I never liked it before.   All I have left on my to do list is stuff that is basically work I have to do.  It's a good thing.  Have probably gone through enough of the green.  Of course, I am always adding things so I never get done.  It keeps my mind occupied and seems to be good therapy.

After I finished in the house I went back out to the garage.  It is a real mess but I will get there.  I found my turkey baster in the box that has painting supplies in it.  I wondered what had happened to it.  and why was it in there?  This whole project is a hoot.  I am fascinated with this whole business.

When I met Cowboy he was a Command Sergeant Major in the army.  His desk was clean, you could eat off of his floor and he was a very effective manager.  How to reconcile that with this mess?  Could his brain have been going a lot sooner than I thought?   We have been in this house for about 6 years so maybe that is so.

I am taking the approach that like things should be together, such as all paint and paint supplies should be together.  All yard things should be together and so forth.  Makes sense, doesn't it?  and then there is the very large pile of things I don't want or need.  After I get through everything I will organize it, put prices on it or plan to donate it and then will be ready when Cowboy's eldest gets here.

It is now after 3 and I am completely pooped.  Guess grandson will be taking me to eat tomorrow.  Have to work that and my trip to see Cowboy into my Sunday.
