Sunday, December 21

This past Monday I went to the surgery center and had an endoscopy.  Piece of cake.  The doc says I have a hernia and gastritis.  Have a follow up appointment on the 29th when labs come back but pretty sure everything is fine.  Timing worked out great.  My daughter is on vacation for the next two weeks so she could take me and drive.

Tuesday I decided I better get the shopping finished for the little ones.  Spent the day at the mall.  Wall to wall people!!  There were lots of bargains so I bought myself a couple of blouses.

Cowboy called me Tuesday and asked me if I had the "list".  I asked him what list.  Apparently he had seen something on TV about some girls being abducted.  He wanted the list of their names so he could help.  I told him I would do everything I could to get it.  This sort of thing happens sometimes and then he forgets it ever was discussed.  Hope that happens this time.

My daughter and I went down to the home on Thursday.  It was the day of the residents Christmas party.  What a great event.  All the staff dressed up in these adorable costumes as Christmas trees, presents, snowmen, angels, etc. KUDOS to them for a great party.

There was more family there than I have ever seen before which was nice.  My daughter got Cowboy a calendar with beautiful horse pictures.  I got him an analog watch.  I have in the past bought him two digital watches and he messes with them and then announces they are broken.  Maybe he will do better with this one. The staff had provided each resident with a sweat shirt and a pair of socks as gifts from Santa.  A few days earlier all of the residents were given afghans for warmth.  Cowboy's is green and blue and very pretty.  There were children who sang carols and some fellas from a motorcycle club.

I have agreed to let my daughter get a dog.  She found a beautiful boxer puppy at a rescue organization and picked him up Friday.  So Friday involved trips to Petsmart and to a vet.  "Cali" was given a clean bill of health and got her shots, etc.  My daughter will be home through January so that should give us time to get some training in.

We spent yesterday cleaning out closets, trading some clothes and filled up two bags for the GoodWill folks.

I am managing to be completely lazy today.  Have read the paper, gone through a pile of periodicals and picked up my desk.  I recently received more information about my upcoming trip and have been looking at it as well.

Tomorrow we are going to see Cowboy and take the dog down to see him.

Friday, December 12

Had a great time in Georgetown this past weekend.  Went to the museum and enjoyed a dulcimer concert Friday night and then some friends and I went out to eat.  Saturday AM went to dulcimer practice and played with them.  then Saturday afternoon I had lunch with the friend I am staying with and the friend I am going to South America with, then went to see the little dog I gave to a neighbor months ago.  I still miss her.   I couldn't tell if she knew me but I like to think she did.  Since she loves absolutely everyone it is hard to say.  I then went to visit another friend in my old neighborhood.

Stayed in Saturday night and helped my friend eat some of the left overs that were accumulating.

Sunday afternoon I went to see Cowboy.  He was doing fine.  Then back to Georgetown for the party the neighborhood was having.  What fun to see my old neighbors.  They had a great band.

I came home Monday after lunch with a couple of buddies from the old neighborhood.  A really great extended weekend.  Sometimes I feel sad about leaving all the wonderful people and it was heartwarming to see them.

The roof was started on Monday and completed on Tuesday.  On Wednesday the painter came and repaired the stains on the ceiling. On Thursday the electrician came and put up the light fixture in the game room.   I think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!!

I got early today and drove down to see Cowboy.  There was a Christmas party for the staff this morning that started at 10 AM.  I had made deviled eggs to take and also had bought a gift for the gift exchange.  There was lots of food and merriment.  The residents got their usual lunch but since I am a volunteer and he is my spouse he was able to eat from the party table. At first, he ate an egg and a small piece of sausage. Then his appetite kicked in and he decided he wanted a full plate, then he decided he needed another one.  Then he decided he had to have some of the banana pudding.  Once again I don't know where he puts it all.

It was a nice day and we walked about outside for a few minutes, then went in and listened to Christmas music.

I am going to have to get in some shopping this week for the little ones and finish the decorating.  I did get the tree up on Wednesday and most of the decor is in place.  I scoured the house looking for my Christmas tablecloth.  Must have spent two hours.  I am definitely losing my sense of organization as I get older.  I finally found it in with some of the stuff in the Christmas boxes.  I keep all of those type of things in the linen closet. What was I thinking.

Thursday, December 4

I went and picked up Cowboy last Wednesday.  There were 3 wrecks between Temple and Waco so it was slow going.  I worried he would decide he had to go to the bathroom or walk around while we were stuck in traffic.  At one point we decided to stop and eat and I took him to a BBQ place and he really enjoyed the food.

When we got home I set him down in front of the TV but he wouldn't stay.  He kept going outside and I kept going after him while trying to get some baking done.  While inside he kept opening every drawer he saw and examining the contents, picking up things, etc.

We had a very nice Thanksgiving.  There were about 25 people during the course of the day.  All of my daughter's sons and their respective families, some of her single lady friends, some of the grandson's friends.  Think there were about 8 kids under 12.  We had lots of food and way too many desserts.

Cowboy sat at the head of the main dining table and ate a full plate of food I fixed for him, then he got up and filled his plate again himself and then had dessert.  I don't know how he could hold it all but seemed to really enjoy every bite.

He seemed to really enjoy all the kiddos especially our one year old great grandaughter.

I took a very weary Cowboy back on Friday and helped with some of the decorating of the Memory Unit at the home.  I had bought Santas for each door, we had the stockings from last year and there were some children from a home school group who decorated the tree.  Nice time.

I then left and drove down to Georgetown.  Arrived in time to go the a rehearsal of my old band mates and visit with them.  Then I went to a friends house and ate dinner with her and her hubby.

I then drove over to Ft Hood and spent the night and hit the PX.  Had to get back to Dallas in time for a dentist appointment at 3.  Everything worked out fine.  I lost a crown last week and was lucky that he could use it and just recement it.  Lot better than the cost of a new one!!

Developed a low tire on Sunday and stopped at Pep Boys.  They said everything was fine and light should go out.  It didn't.

Took the car to the dealer yesterday and found their compressor had exploded.  interesting.....  Anyhow, had to go back there today and learned there was a very small hole in one tire.  They patched it so at least didn't have to buy a new tire.

Have plans to go see Cowboy tomorrow and then go on to Georgetown again.  Am staying the night with a friend and going to the dulcimer practice on Saturday to visit.  Am going to try to see as many folks as I can while I am there and then going to the old neighborhood's party Sunday night, lunch with a few neighbors on Monday, back to see Cowboy on way home and then home.

Roof goes in Monday and Tuesday of next week and then am having the house thoroughly cleaned on Wednesday.  I have been doing all the cleaning on the first level since moving here but am considering hiring someone to do it from time to time.

My daughter is working on the game room.  Packages have arrived with a clock, a shot glass cabinet and a pool table light fixture.

Monday, November 24

Found out Saturday am getting a whole new roof and they are going to fix the ceiling too.  Won't be for a couple of weeks but the deal is done.  yea !!

Went to see Cowboy yesterday.  Had planned to go Saturday but it was pouring down rain so didn't want to deal with it.  It was gorgeous out yesterday.  We walked around outside for quite a while and Cowboy kept picking up the leaves that had fallen.  Some of them were large and quite pretty, oak and maple..  We also picked up acorns and examined them carefully.  Cowboy talked about me taking them all home??????

My daughter bought a 60 inch TV for the game room Saturday.  Are getting it hung on the wall this afternoon.  The game room is coming together.  I haven't bothered with much upstairs and because she travels it is taking awhile but it is going to be really neat.  Still need to find a bar and some other things.

Things are coming together for Thanksgiving.  Looks like we are going to have a houseful.  Don't think can put both a turkey and a ham in the oven at the same time and then there all the sides.  Am going to have to figure out how to do it all.

I am going to go get Cowboy on Wednesday and take him back on Friday.  They have a rule of not keeping them out more than 48 hours.  I explained it to him yesterday and made arrangements with staff to have him ready.

Happy Thanksgiving !!

Wednesday, November 19

I went to see Cowboy on Sunday and then again today.  On Sunday he seemed very surprised to see me and asked me why I was there on a "Sunday?"  Since I often go on Sunday can't say where that came from.  It was cold and wet so we stayed in and spent some time in the common area and watched some TV.  He was restless but cheerful.

Today he was in a really good humor. For some unexplained reason traffic was light and it went well going and coming home.   Still cold so couldn't get out.  We looked at the newspaper, walked around and just hung out. He spent some time looking at the grocery ad and got all wrapped up in the customer loyalty requirement on the sale items.  I tried to explain it but he just couldn't comprehend what I was talking about.

I bought him two pair of jeans on Sunday after my visit and I brought them to him.  They fit fine.  Some of his jeans seemed to have "left the building".

The dentist was there Monday did the impression to modify his bridge.  He looks kind of funny with no teeth on the bottom in front.  He can still eat but with some difficulty.

I made arrangements for a podiatrist to visit and to order him a pair of shoes.  His current shoes are 3 years old and I think we are supposed to get new ones every year.  I have been a bad girl letting it go like this.

My roof is still not fixed.  Am in a "kerfuffle" with the insurance company.  A new adjuster and my roofer were here Saturday to reinspect it and I am waiting to hear from them.  The roofer seems to think they will approve replacing the whole roof. Here's hoping.........

I had a handyman here last Thursday and he finished the guest bathroom and painted a little bit of the ceiling where my grandson had accidentally got some green paint on the white ceiling.

Yesterday the pool man told me there is no electricity to the pump for the pool.  Geez !!  I swear it is always something.  Called an electrician and he will be here tomorrow.  I have a son-in-law who is an electrician.  Unfortunately, he is in upstate New York.

Won't be long I will have this place in good shape (I hope).

A friend of mine and her husband are going with me on a trip in January.  She plays accordion with the group I used to be in and is a retired nurse.   Her hubby is a retired Lutheran minister and very nice.  They used to help me out with Cowboy when he was still at home.

I am so excited.  I am going to Peru and will see Machu Pichu and Lima.  Then I will go to Chile, landing in Santiago.  Don't have all the details handy at the moment but will make a stop in Patagonia then on to Argentina.

After that not sure what might want to do.  My daughter wants to plan a trip to Australia and to start putting money aside for that.  Since she travels all the time she has lots of airline miles and wants to accumulate enough for the flight for both of us.  Will take about another year, she thinks.

I can't complain.  Am sitting here in my easy chair in a warm and attractive house and have talked to several family members over the course of the day.

I have this neat recipe for salmon that I am going to try tomorrow.  It calls for bourbon so had to make a stop at the liquor store but will be fun to try.  Working on Thanksgiving dinner in my head.

Thursday, November 13

The days just seem to fly by.  I always have a list of things to do.

I spent this morning going from Dollar General store to other Dollar General stores trying to gather up enough Santa wall hangings to put one on each residents' door.  It took 4 stores but I have them.  The idea came from one of the other wives but they will look pretty cool I think.  We are going to put up the tree and decorate the day after Thanksgiving.

I made a visit to Cowboy on Saturday and we walked quite a bit.  He was fretting about the bird seed issue.  Ran into the activity aide and she said she has some, not to worry.

I went to the home Tuesday in the afternoon.  At 5 we had a special dinner with tablecloths, cloth napkins and centerpieces.  We celebrated Veterans day in style.  There were a group of soldiers from Ft Hood that came around and visited with everyone.

Cowboy had already been shaved, showered and dressed before I got there.  He had on a rose boutinere and looked really nice.   I put on a dress up top and patent dress shoes and jewelry.  It was a nice event.

Because it was late when it was over I stayed over at a hotel and then drove home yesterday.

Yesterday afternoon I had an appointment with the gastrenterologist. (how do you spell that anyway?)
He wants to do an upper GI.  I have never had one and have a lot of trouble with acid reflux so is time to make sure there isn't damage in there.  It is scheduled for the 15th of December.  The medicine he gave me last month for my colon is working wonders for the irritable bowel issue.  Modern medicine is a wonderful thing.

My daughter and I are going to host Thanksgiving this year and I have been picking up things that we will need when I am out.  I found some place mats on sale at the dollar store.  who knew?  They will be great for the little ones.

I have a handyman here and am finally getting the guest bath finished.  He is also doing a little patching on some of the painting that my grandson did.  We had green paint on the ceiling and we dabbed white on it.

I also talked to a landscaper this morning.  I have decided I couldn't keep the weeds out if I pulled them everyday so I going to turn it over to an expert.

Tuesday, November 4

I can't even tell you what I have done this week.  I certainly didn't accomplish much of anything.  My daughter was home from Saturday til this morning and we did get some time to chat.  Grandson #4 was over as well.   I also spent quite a bit of time catching up with my favorite TV shows.

I  went  to see Cowboy on Friday and he was doing fine.  We had their wonderful catfish and spent a lot of time looking at an old atlas.  I would ask him where in South Dakota he lived as a child.   He couldn't tell me.  We looked at a map of Arizona and New Mexico and he told me there used to be another state in between them.   We looked at some of the places in Europe we visited when we lived in Germany many years ago.  I showed him where I had been on my trip.   It was nice because we were actually conversing even though he was having a little trouble remembering things.

I was going to see him today but it is raining very hard here today and I didn't want to drive in it.  I35 is enough of a challenge on a good day.  I will go tomorrow.  I called him and told him and he was fine.

There is another good reason to wait until tomorrow.  He is to see the dentist to get an impression made so they can modify his bridge.  He likes for me to be nearby when he sees the dentist.

I have started a menu for Thanksgiving.  We are going to have folks over.  Don't know how many yet but will probably be a houseful.  Then I can build a shopping list.

I need to carve out some time to go through the several hundred pictures I took on my trip and print out the best ones.

I will be staying in today for sure.  I can hear the rain beating down.

Wednesday, October 29

Got home Sunday eve.  Terribly jet lagged and with a mild cold.  Lots of sleep was in order.  Spent Monday doing laundry, going through a ton of mail and generally putting things away.

I went to see Cowboy yesterday.  He was happy to see me.  He was fine.  They were listening to a fellow play the guitar and sing western songs.  He always enjoys that.  I joined him.  When that was over we walked around a bit.  Beautiful day and lots of birds were feeding.  Nice visit.  He didn't say a word about my being gone.  His inability to keep track of time helps in that regard.

I went out today and bought underwear and socks for Cowboy and got some groceries.  My cold is about gone and I feel rested.  Another very nice day.

We are having a Halloween party at the home Friday so will make some pumpkin pies tomorrow  to take.

I had a wonderful time on the trip.  There were several single ladies to hang out with.  They were from Maryland, California, Florida and Idaho.  About all we had in common was our age.  They were fun and friendly.

The ship was very nice and comfortable.  The food was amazing.  I enjoyed every bite.  They had some sort of entertainment every night.  I liked the folk dancers the best with the gypsy band a close second.

I probably learned more history, geography and cultural details than on any trip I have ever made.  Listening to the citizens talk about the communist years and the Baltic wars makes you realize how fortunate we have been in this country during the past few decades.

We made several stops between Budapest and Bucharest. The weather was nice for most of the trip.  In the 60's for the most part. Then the last two days the wind blew terribly and on Saturday we had rain, then sleet and then snow.   To top it off the bus had a flat driving from the coast of the black sea to Bucharest.  We sat on the road for over an hour while another bus came to rescue us.  Needless to say between the delay and the weather didn't have much time to see Bucharest.  All part of the adventure I suppose.

Sunday, October 12

This will be my last post until I return from my trip.  I leave on Tuesday and fly to Frankfurt and then take a second flight to Budapest.  We will take a look around Budapest before sailing down the Danube.  Several stops in Hungary, Serbia, Croatia and end up in Bucharest, Romania before flying home.  Will arrive home on Sunday the 26th.

I hope I have covered all the bases.  The kids have my travel information and have promised to call Cowboy a time or two to check on him and the home has their numbers.

I bought a backpack today.  Have never used one but am told they make the job of carrying things around a lot easier so here we go.  One of our stops will include a dinner at a local home and as suggested, I bought a little gift.  I bought Texas wildflower seeds, a magnet and some pictures of the area to give them.

I went to see Cowboy yesterday.  Some of the ladies had brought in fixins for fajitas.  Cowboy didn't want any.  They did serve their regular lunch so he ate good, fried chicken and trimmings.  Then he ate a big piece of cake.  That ought to raise his blood sugar.   He was fidgety.  It was raining and he couldn't go outside.  It quit after lunch and so he went out when I left.  I explained to him that I was going to be gone for a couple of weeks but I suspect he will forget.  This is the longest I have ever left.  Hope he does well.

Tomorrow I pack and I have an appointment with the gastrointerologist at 3PM.  Just to find out what he already told me I suspect.

Thursday, O9ctober

All was good with the colonoscopy.  Hope he will tell me  can wait another  10 years but won't find out til go back to see the doc on the 13th.  Such a pain in the you know what.

Went to see Cowboy yesterday.  He was doing OK but got really upset with this new resident that is a bit like "Billy", always talking and bothering everyone.  We went to see the dentist and he had 3 teeth filled.  When I get home from my trip we will go back and get a tooth pulled and his partial modified. It frustrates me no end that they do such a poor job with oral hygiene.  It just doesn't seem to be on their radar.  A lot of the residents don't have any teeth and some of the rest of them have no one requesting or paying for dental care.  Talked to one wife and I get the impression a lot of it is just how difficult the whole process is and how unwilling the patients are to go through the process.

Had a nice lunch and then I headed back.  Met with the insurance adjuster on the roof and he doesn't agree that the whole roof needs replacing.  I called the roofer and he wants to come out and take pics and address it with the insurance company  Can't do much until I get back so agreed to let him do that and we will do some negotiating.  Not a big hurry since the roof has been temporarily fixed so will address when I get back;

I went to the primary physician today and learned that my labs show I am pre-diabetic and my cholesterol is borderline high.  Am going to have to get serious about my diet.  Bone scan was good and labs were otherwise good.  He suggested I use a stool softener, add more fiber to my diet and that I should be fine.

I got a haircut and a pedicure today in preparation for the trip.  Tomorrow I plan to catch up on correspondence, bills, etc and start laying out my clothes for the trip.  May try to hit the mall and look for a backpack, although I have a nice satchel could use.

Grandson #4 worked yesterday and painted my bathroom.  Still needs some touch up but looks pretty nice.  He left and went back to stay with his girlfriend.  I worry about him and the whole situation.  More later.

Sunday, October 5Fri

It was going along as a pretty good week.  I had gone to see Cowboy on Wednesday and he was doing fine.  He continues to spend a good deal of time outside.  We walked around and he commented about the bird feeders and fretted that very little of the feed had been consumed.  It is possible that the aide refilled them because I saw lots of birds last time was there, but not today.

On Thursday we had a terrible storm.  High winds.  They said up to 90 MPH.  Anyway the sun came out about five and I went outside and my yard and pool were filled with shingles off the roof.  I went to the front of the house and you could see rows of shingles standing straight up.  One shingle was lodged between two of the slats in the fence.  You think of tornadoes when you see that but it was just straight wind.

I immediately called a roofing company off of Angie's list that same evening and he came out first thing Friday AM.  He took about 5 minutes and said I was going to have to put on a new roof.  I was really hoping they could fix it for a few hundred but no such luck.  I called the insurance company while he was here and they will be out on Wednesday.   I feel really dumb but I don't know what price they use to determine the value of the house on which the deductible is based.  1% of the value of the house.  We will see.

They sent some fellows out on Friday afternoon to put some covering on the roof to prevent water from getting in the house.  Supposed to rain again.

Friday afternoon I went to pick up my daughter.  My tummy had been bothering me all day. Lots of gas.  Too much of something.  (Lordy, I hate this getting older stuff).   At the last minute they had changed her gate and I had to backtrack from one area to another.  DFW is a nightmare on a good day and right now it is all torn up with construction.  Between worrying about soiling my clothes and not knowing where I was going I was a little distracted.  Found the turn but was in the wrong lane, went to move over and sideswiped a hotel van.

There was little damage to either vehicle but the driver called her manager and was told to stay there and call the airport police.  The next thing that happened was I expelled more than gas.  We got our business taken care of and waited at the very busy airport for the policeman.  He comes, takes a quick look, asked if we exchanged info and left.

I was a bit late picking up my daughter and she had a Dr. appt to get to so they could release her from the crutches, etc.  She called the doc and let them know and off we went in a rush.  I drop her off, go home to clean up and then return to pick her up.  She is distraught.  Two more weeks of crutches.

So now I call my insurance company for the second time in one day.  That has to be pretty uncommon, hah!  I was kicking myself all the way to Timbuctu and back.  I can just imagine what this is going to do to the already high insurance rates.

I went to see Cowboy again yesterday.  He was cranky for some reason.  There was a birthday party for two of the residents and the staff and there had been food brought in and a huge cake.  Lots of visitors, noise and confusion.  Maybe that was it.  The home has a room for that sort of thing.  I think maybe they should have gone there.

Came back home, picked up my daughter and headed to grandson #2's for a birthday party for his youngest.  I did not realize she was turning 1.  What on earth has happened to the time.  Great party but noisy.  Lots of little kiddies.

I would like to say I am spending the day today in my easy chair but it is not to be.  I have a colonoscopy scheduled for in the morning.  That means drinking all that awful liquid and spending a lot of time running to the bathroom

My days should improve after that.  Have a bit more shopping to do for the trip.  I am going to buy a backpack.

Grandson #4 is coming over to take me tomorrow and then is going to help me clean up the mess from the storm.     and so it goes..........

Sunday, September 28

I went shopping Friday for my trip.  I bought a new pair of walking shoes,  some underwear.  (had a 30% off at Kohl's and my present underwear was showing a lot of "wear".)  I then delivered some things to GoodWill and filled up my car and went to the pool store.  Someone lost the adapter for the air pump and blowing up pool toys by mouth is a job.  I think I will shoot the next person who loses the adapter.  They are not easy to find.  Had checked at WalMart, Academy Sports, on line, etc.

Yesterday I slept in a bit and did my laundry and then went over to Cowboy's youngest daughters house.  It was the triplets birthday so we went out to a Chinese buffet.  I really enjoyed it.  I haven't been to a Chinese buffet in years !!  (ate too much).  I watched their daughter who will be 13 next month eat oysters and sushi and such.  wow.....I had never even heard of such things at her age.  The 10 year old triplets picked all sorts of things.  One had mostly fruit, one had mostly meat and one got a variety of things.  They are definitely not anything alike.  They are like stair steps and have different color hair and eyes.  Beautiful children and I am not a bit biased.

Today I went to see Cowboy.  He was very mellow and content.  We sat outside for a long time.  I didn't have a lunch ticket and left at noon when he got his food.  Had been there about 2 hours.  Traffic was terrible coming back.  Between the Cowboys game and the State Fair there are lots of folks around here.  I noticed on the way there these pretty little pink flowers growing along the road.  Not sure what they were but obviously a fall flower.  The fields are now either dirt or golden.  The crops have been harvested.  Looks like a lot of winter wheat going in.

When I got home enjoyed the Sunday paper and TV.  Don't really want to move.  Driving down there and back takes a lot out of me but am always anxious to spend time with Cowboy.

Thursday, September 25"

I couldn't do a day to day recount of the past few days if I wanted to.  It is all a blur.  I am getting to be a real slacker.

I went to see Cowboy last week on Tuesday and again on Friday.  We had their wonderful catfish on Friday.  He is about the same.  We seem to be on a "plateau as far as his progress.  That is a good thing but it leaves me dreading the next drop off.  A long time ago the doc told me the disease would proceed not in a straight line but in plateaus and drop offs.  It is hard to think about but I saw that happen with some of the other fellows here.  Jim is a good example.  For the longest time he could walk and talk to you and even would hug and kiss me and could feed himself and then all of the sudden he was in a wheelchair, couldn't lift his head and was only half  there and then he was in bed and passed on.  All in a few weeks.  I became acquainted with his wife and she was a sweetheart and now she isn't around anymore.

This past Saturday night the home called and said Cowboy wanted to talk to me.  He got on the phone and told me that he needed a car so he could take food to help them out.  I asked him to whom and he named one of our daughters.  As we talked he seemed teary and frustrated and said he needed to get food to "Frank".  We don't know any Frank.   I talked to him for a bit and he settled down.

On Sunday morning he called again and was happy and excited.  "Guess who came to see me?"  I couldn't guess so he said "VI!!"  Vi is a younger sister of Cowboy's that we haven't seen in years.  She lives on the west coast.   Turns out it was his eldest daughter and her husband that had driven down from Oklahoma.  They had brought birdseed and feeders and spent a good part of Sunday and then Monday morning breakfast with him.  I drove down and visited with them and with Cowboy. Lovely day, not too hot and Cowboy was having a good day.

On Wednesday I went down and we visited the dentist who was on site for the day.  He got his teeth cleaned and I got a lecture about reminding the staff more often to be sure and get him to brush and take his dentures out.  He has 3 more cavities plus a tooth that needs to come out which means modifications to his dentures so we will be scheduling those appointments.

On the home front I have been working on the yard and the house and doing research for the upcoming trip.  I am getting excited.  Budapest to Bucharest on a river boat with stops in several town that have been around since the middle ages.

Last saturday night grandson number 2 brought their kids over for 3 hours while he and his wife went out to dinner and party for his birthday.  I put their 8 month old in bed with me.  She took her bottle a bit too enthusiastically and then spit it all up all over me, the bed, and herself.  Changed the sheets and cleaned her up and then she was wide awake and wouldn't settle down.  FINALLY we got to sleep.  Don't know if I had it worse or if my daughter who took care of the three year old.  I am told she talked non stop for the whole three hours we had them.    ahhhhhh family.........

Tuesday, September 16

10 days since I posted.  That may be a new record length of time.  I apologize.  I don't know what is happening with me.  Can't seem to stay organized.

I went to see Cowboy this past Friday and again today.  He is doing OK.  He seems kind of "dreamy" some of the time, like he is off dreaming about something else rather than being present.   The new activity aide (this is number 3 since he has been there) seems to be very fond of Cowboy.  She told me that in the spring she plans to take him over to another area of the home so they can plant a garden and be able to tend it without Billy tearing it up.  She told me that Cowboy reminds her to fill the birdbath and the feeders if she doesn't do it..  All of this will take a special effort on her part.  She also told me she is taking a group on a field trip tomorrow to a drive thru animal park. Cowboy expressed an interest in going.
.
I spent  quite a bit of time this past week taking my daughter to therapy and to the eye doctor and helping her clean up her room.  She purchased a pool table with a red cover and I have been tapped to cover some pillows and the bar chairs in red.  It is going to be a cool space.

Saturday night there was some fight on TV and she invited her kids and some friends over and they  were here until 1 AM.  The good news is I can't really hear anything when I go in my room and close the door.

I took my daughter to the airport yesterday and had the house to myself the rest of the day.  It was nice.  I had time to do a little shopping and buy groceries.  My daughter is on crutches for two more weeks but was released to work and travel.  When the next two weeks have passed t is when things will really get back to normal.  yea !

I have spent quite a bit of time working the yard the past couple of weeks and have the chigger bites to prove it.  The little critters think I am the sweetest thing around.  The yard is beginning to look pretty good but it is going to take another year to look the way I want.

Saturday, September 6

I am sitting here looking at a desk totally piled up with piles of paper, coupons, camera equipment, receipts, etc.  Time to tidy up.

I bought a new camera this week!  The one I have is large, heavy and I learned very out of date.  Can you believe it.  I spent $900 for a camera in 2007 and when I go to buy memory cards can only get them at a camera store and are told "back in those days".    It takes great pics so I am still going to use it so bought some cards.  I can use it locally along with its heavy bulky lens.   Was told it wouldn't be long before I wouldn't be able to get them anymore.  Anyway I ruined my little one when I went to Costa Rica so I bought a little better one.  It is smaller and lighter but still has considerable zoom.  I am excited about having a good one for my trips.

We booked the South America trip for January.  I know I will like this.  We are going to visit Peru, Chile and Argentina.  I am going with a dear friend from my former community.

I went to see Cowboy yesterday.  He was outside.  The aide said he goes to this same place every day under the trees, away from the rather busy main patio and sits and looks at the trees and birds and squirrels.  Seems quite content.  I know I have often found him there.

She went to get him for me and we went back to his room and visited for a while and then went out to the common room and sat.   He looks at me sometimes with a rather puzzled look.  Not sure if he doesn't get who I am or what.   He has a hard time putting together a sentence.  What comes out is just gibberish but every now and then he will say something just clear as a bell.   Traffic was bad.  I don't like Fridays.

This coming week I have to take my daughter to two physical therapy appointments and an eye doctor appointment.  She is trying to take care of all these things while she is home this few weeks.  They have released her to travel starting the 15th.

This past week we got grandson #4 signed up for a trade school (Job Corps) in San Marcos.  It is about 4 hours from here.  He is going to learn to be an electrician.  He really loves doing videos and has cut a CD (rap) but you can starve to death trying to carve a life from that so I am pleased that he will have a trade to use to support himself while he is doing those things.  He has been so aimless.

Very soon I will be back to having the house to myself and I am looking forward to it.

Monday, September 1

This past week has been very busy, too busy.......

At this moment there are a number of people at our house.  My daughter is on the deck watching her son, his wife, his children, her son's friend, his wife and children, daughter's best friend from high school and a friend of hers, my daughter's best friend here and her boyfriend playing in the pool, eating hamburgers, hot dogs, etc.

I have cooked several meals the last few days and decided to leave it to them this afternoon.  I am in my easy chair, laptop on my lap and watching the news.

I went to see Cowboy on Monday and again on Friday this week.  Had to do physical therapy and Dr. appointments the other days.  He is doing OK.  When I got there yesterday he was in his room and he was weak and dizzy and clammy.  His blood sugar was 45.  Two cups of orange juice later he was OK.  They do a good job of keeping an eye on the residents but didn't know he was low.  He had not been out of his room since breakfast.

This coming week will be more of the same.  Everybody back to work and things will quiet down a lot.

A good friend of mine contacted me this week and suggested we plan a trip to South America.  Are thinking about Peru, Chile and Argentina.  Just in the planning stages but think I am going to do it.

Saturday, August 23

You should see me trying to wrap my daughters leg in saran wrap and a plastic bag so she can shower. It is quite a process.  Then there is the two bags of ice a day for her equipment that ices her knee and those stairs.  whew !  my fridge won't hold but two bags of ice so we go buy ice every day.  But she is doing well and has quit being so cranky.  We have two physical therapy sessions under the belt.

Yesterday Cowboy's youngest daughter came over with her brood.  She has an almost 13 year old going into 7th grade and almost 10 year triplets. Hubby is a teacher and he stayed home trying to get ready for the start of school on Monday.

They had a ball in the pool and were playing outside from 3 PM until 8 PM with a time out for some burgers and hot dogs with the trimmings.  My daughter had insisted we get a charcoal grill and I was out there trying to get it lit (prefer gas, thank you very much).   I had made cupcakes earlier in the day for them.

When we were cleaning up I picked up the bag of charcoal that was not used and the bottom fell out.  It had gotten wet.  What a mess.  All over the deck of the pool we have charcoal dust.  Too tired to clean it up tonight.  Will get to it tomorrow.  I am even a little sun burned, not good.

Woke up this morning, hauled ice upstairs, wrapped up daughters leg, brought her some cereal, etc.
Just heard from daughters oldest son, grandson #2.  They are coming over today, his first chance to visit since her surgery.   His wife was over Tuesday night with the kids but he had to work.

I am going to go see Cowboy tomorrow.  He continues to amaze.  He is going down but it is slower than a lot of the fellows there.  We have watched several of them go down and pass away this past year and a half.   It brings meaning to the term they use in the group sessions "anticipatory grief". I can't help but think about it a lot.  I think what the doctor said is true.   He is "one tough old bird".  I am grateful for every day that I can make him smile, or get a hug or hold his hand.

Tuesday, August 19

My daughter had her surgery yesterday.  We arrived at the surgery center at 9:30.  She went for the surgery at 11 and they were finished at about 12:30.  We went for the follow up today and they told us her tissues were very healthy and they said the surgery went well.  She now has a screw in her knee as well as a bunch of stitches that will eventually dissolve as well as another larger screw that is made of a biological material that will be absorbed slowly by her body over the next 3 years.  and then some of the damaged tissue was replaced with material from a cadaver.  Wow, the wonders of what can be done today.  Today they showed us part of the video of the surgery and gave us a copy so we can watch the whole thing later if we want.  On crutches for 6 weeks and can't even bend her leg for several days.  Quite a lot of pain last night but after tonight it will start getting better.

There are a lot of interesting details about how they do things these days but I won't go into all of it.  It just fascinates me, I find it amazing.  She started physical therapy today and goes back on Thursday so I am going to see Cowboy tomorrow.   Her son can look after her.  He is still painting baseboards but we are almost done.

God must have been planning things for us because it is a good thing I am here during this time.  She could not have managed without support.  I sure have climbed those stairs more than I would like but I am managing.

Talked to my daughter in NY today and we decided I will come up there between Thanksgiving and Christmas.  We can go to the city and see the beautiful decorations and do some shopping and go to a Broadway show.  My sisters had planned on coming this fall but one of them is still fighting about getting her roof fixed so we all decided to wait until spring.  I told them we are not getting any younger, need to do this soon.  So I have my trip in October to Easter Europe and then NY in December and family coming in the spring.  Sounds nice.  Hope to maybe get to Peru next year but no plans made yet.

Sunday, August 17

I can't even remember how I managed to go a whole week without thinking about posting.  Maybe I just think my notes are getting a bit stale.  And then I will hear from someone who reads it and realize there are some folks who are interested.

I went to see Cowboy on Tuesday.  He was very non communicative.  Just stared most of the time.  He did eat his lunch and let them shave him.  The heat means he is not spending as much time outside.

Lots of errands this week....haircut, pedicure, some shopping and supervising my worker (grandson).

I went to see Cowboy again yesterday.  I saw the aide in the hall and she showed me some pictures that they took Friday night at the horse show.  She said Cowboy had a wonderful time.

When they were standing in line to get their tickets there was a lady behind them who just talked and talked and acted like she knew everything there was to know about how they trained the horses.  Cowboy leaned over to Bobbie (the aide) and said "I wish she would shut the hell up" just clear as a bell.  She was worried he was going to get difficult but he didn't.  whew......

I told the aide my visits were going to be a little less often this coming week and maybe the following week.  Have to drive my daughter to therapy, etc.  She said she would be sure and give him extra hugs and a treat or two.

They got special treatment at the show.  They took them down to the gate and let them interact with the horses.  She took a couple of pictures of Cowboy petting one of the horses.  Said he didn't act tired or sleepy all evening.

I talked to him about the field trip and he said he liked it.  Said they went to a Chinese restaurant ???? and he had 6 fingers and put his hands about 8 inches apart "this big".  I asked if he had anything else. He said no.

I haven't done much today.   Will be wrapped up in my daughters surgery and follow up the next few days.  Hope it all goes well.

Saturday, August 9

It has been nearly or over 100 all week.  Terribly hot.   We have suspended working outside and are concentrating on getting the woodwork done.  Grandson is making good progress.

Got the drapes up in the living and dining rooms and the rods bought for my bedroom.  The first ones I bought would not work.  Wow, four months I have been at this.  Of course, it has been punctuated with dips in the pool, shopping trips, weddings, etc. but still......

I went to see Cowboy on Monday and Thursday this week.  Traffic was not half bad either day.  or am I just adjusting to the craziness?  It is pretty light going but always heavy coming home.  No slowdowns lately.

Cowboy has been doing pretty well lately although his speech is generally garbled and he can't make sentences that make sense. I continue to worry that he will fall.   He smiles easily and is spending more time interacting with others.  The new activity aide is really good with him.

She asked me if I thought he would do well on a field trip to go see a horse show next week.  I gave permission and paid the $17.  It is the Lipizaner stallions.  We saw them once many years ago in Germany.  I know he will love it.

My friend's hubby passed on Tuesday so she is not going to be there anymore.  She was always there for lunch, every single day.  I will miss her.  sweet lady.

I think I will stay in out of the heat today.  Yesterday I got up, went to pick two internet orders, at WalMart and at Penney's.  Both ladies were ungodly slow and it took a while.   Bought some groceries and came back and picked up Grandson to go do banking and postal chores.  'Then we went to Peter Piper Pizza which just opened up.  It is kind of a cross between Cici's (cheap but awful pizza) and Chuckee Cheese (games and lots of kids and noise).  Won't be going back there.

I think the kids are going to take the jet ski's out today.  I won't be going.  Too dang hot for me.

Monday, August 4

I went to see Cowboy on Friday and he was doing OK.  We sat outside.  It was cooler than usual and the birds were active.  He was fretting because the bird feeder was empty.

I didn't do much on Saturday....a little laundry, pulled a few weeds.  Nice restful day.   I got the electronic copies of the wedding pictures.  There are over 300 of them so will take a while to go through them and pick out a few.

Sunday was Grandson # 4's birthday.  His brother and family came over after church and we had pizza and a birthday cake and then everyone spent the entire afternoon in the pool.  Very nice day.

I went to see Cowboy again today.  We just watched TV and had lunch.  One of the ladies husband is very bad and expected to pass at any time.  She was distressed and sad.  Lots of family there.  I went to see him and told him I missed his kisses and we never got to dance.  He is in a coma so no way to know if he is hearing anything.  Somehow I doubt it.

One of the aides came by and said she and Cowboy had been keeping the birdbath filled and seed in the feeders.  He has put himself in charge of that.  The flower beds are completely destroyed, courtesy of "Billy" who is really having a hard time with everything.  I feel for him but he is destructive, annoying and unmanageable.

Came back home to a pile of little tasks to complete in the next couple of days.  Hope to have grandson start on painting of baseboards this week.  Still haven't finished yesterdays paper.

Wednesday, July 30

I took my daughter to get an MRI Monday.  We are waiting to hear from the Dr.  Still don't know what will need to be done.  She is a bit a of a wreck with all the waiting.  She is hobbling around and working from home.

I went to see Cowboy yesterday.  He was in good spirits.  I played a gig for the general population in the AM and then repeated it after lunch for the memory unit.   I went heavy on fiddle tunes and I think they really enjoyed it.  This one fellow wanted to buy my fiddle.  Later he asked me if he gave me $1000 would I teach him to play like I do.  Sometimes these guys can be a hoot.

One of the ladies is really worried today.  She is there every day to feed her husband as he cannot manage it himself. The staff feeds those that need help but she likes to do it herself.  She lives nearby. Yesterday he just wouldn't wake up.  At one point he ate a little bit of food and then fell into deep sleep.  She said he is really going down.  She said "I don't know how to do this" with big tears in her eyes.  She is such a nice person and he is very sweet.  He used to give me a kiss on the cheek and once he asked me to dance.  Now he rarely lifts his head and just seems to be in a stupor.

It is rainy today and much cooler.    I haven't done much.  Did go to Home Depot and got some "stump killer" .  We are going to treat all the little tree stumps that are being created in the yard so we can get them out.

I also found a new door guide for the sliding door on the pantry, a big box for my daughter to pack up a fan she is giving to a friend, and bought 10 LED bulbs.  I am on a mission to reduce our power bill and if they deliver as advertised, they should last longer than I will  (21 years).  They are not cheap but use far less power than conventional bulbs.  Need to replace every light in this house.  It is filled with the old conventional lights.

Friday, July 25

Yesterday I went to Penney's to take advantage of a 50% sale on drapes.  Found some pretty sheer drapes for my bedroom. They are white with green leaves on them that match the green of the walls.   It is a start on the windows.  I am sure my grandson can put them up.

Today I drove down to see Cowboy.  He was sitting in the day room watching an old John Wayne movie.  He said hi and asked me if I was out running around today.  I explained it was Friday and I had come to see him.  He said "OK" but seemed puzzled.  We talked about the kids and he couldn't name any of them.  When I asked him which of his daughters had the triplets he named the wrong one.  He just doesn't get it right anymore.

We had a nice lunch of catfish and rice and some really good green beans.  He ate it all.  I am grateful that he eats well.  So many of the patients are thin and don't eat well.  I need to check on his current weight.  He actually seems a bit heavier and that is a good thing.

One of the wives  brought necklaces for all of us with the Alzheimers symbol on it.  I didn't point out to her that Cowboy doesn't have Alzheimers but Lewy Body dementia.  Doesn't matter.  Her heart was in the right place.  It is very pretty and I will wear it.

I told the ladies I will be playing nest Tuesday so they are planning on sticking around and listening.  I appreciate that.  They are a real support group that I treasure.  Will need to spend some time this weekend preparing.  Will use a lot of the music I did for the wedding.

When I got home my grandson was so proud of all he had accomplished today.  He put up the blinds in the kitchen, pulled a lot of weeds, made the beds, did some laundry, trimmed the shrubs etc.  He is  such an interesting young man, sweet and helpful but also a bit of a con man.  He always pushes things a bit.  I think he would make a great salesman.

I came back and heated up some spaghetti and made some garlic bread.  My daughter got home from Jacksonville, Fla about 6 and we had dinner and are now watching a little TV.  I am about ready to call it a day.

Wednesday, July 23

I did just what I said I would do Sunday.  I slept in, got up, drank tea, read the paper, etc.  Wonderful day.  My daughter made steaks and they were great.

I went to see Cowboy yesterday.  He was in a good humor but it was terribly hot so we didn't go out. We watched an episode of "Matlock" and some of "Gunsmoke".    Lunch was tilapia, asparagus and potatoes and watermelon.  After lunch Cowboy was sitting at the table drinking coffee and I walked over to talk with some of the wives.  Next thing I know there is a commotion coming from his table and I turn around and Cowboy has my purse and is shouting at Billy and one of the aides is on her way over.  He was going to bop Billy with the purse I think.  We got him calmed down and Billy on his way and peace returned.  That Billy is a real problem for everyone.

Today I got up pretty early and proceeded to attack the lovely stand of weeds in the yard.  Grandson soon joined me and we made some progress.  It was very hot by 10 so we went to Home Depot and bought more bricks and some other supplies.  He is back out there in the heat but not me.  I am done outside for today.

Friday, July 18

Another busy week.  My daughter was in a lot of pain and didn't want to try to do anything.  I found myself spending time fixing meals, doing laundry, etc.  So many things we had planned to do this week have been put on hold.  She went to the orthopedist on Wed but has to wait on an appointment for an MRI, etc.  Is doing fairly well but is on meds.

On Thursday we both went for an appointment with a dentist I had found and I got a good report but she needs some work.  Can't really schedule anything til have an answer about the knee.

I took Grandson #4 to get a replacement social security card and to renew his license today.  What a mob!!  I think it is a shame these kinds of things can take most of a day and that so many people are inconvenienced.  There has to be a better way.

I am a bit tired but will go see Cowboy tomorrow.  My birthday is Sunday.  Tomorrow when I get home we are going to have steaks on the grill and a nice swim then off to a movie. My great grand daughter is coming over for the afternoon.   I may just stay in bed on Sunday and try to just relax.  Or at least not move out of my recliner.  Will have the Sunday paper to entertain me.

Starting Monday grandson #4 is going to work for 6 hours daily on a list of jobs I have for him.  He still needs to do the baseboards, fix up the guest bath, do some more yard work, etc.  Still need to shop for window treatments and some decor.  On and on it goes.

My grandson  (#2) who got married should be home tomorrow from Puerto Rico.  I am hoping my oldest grandson (#1) and his girlfriend will find some time to come by soon.  There are a few things around here that only he can handle.  I am so grateful for all of them.  They are so sweet and helpful and loving.   I am trying hard not to take advantage of them.

I have received several birthday cards and ecards and appreciate every one.  It is really good therapy to hear from relatives and friends.  Am not particularly happy about turning 70 but as they say "it beats the alternative".  I feel like I am doing  better than many folks and am grateful for that.

I have found a doctor I think I am going to like.  He wants to wait on my records before making any recommendations so we will need to wait a bit for all of that to come about.  It is a little scary when you have to find someone new and it takes a while to build confidence on them.  Here's hoping.........

Sunday, July 13

It has been a whirlwind week.  I went to see Cowboy on Tuesday and he was doing OK.  Terribly hot but we walked around outside for a while and sat outside and watched the birds.  He asked me why that wagon wagon was in the parking lot and I told him there was no wagon.  He insisted there was.  It was a hallucination.  We then sat in the day room for a while.

I took grandson #4 to two job interviews this week.  They didn't turn out to be anything acceptable.  He continues to help me with the yard and the house.  Something will work out soon I am sure.

I went to a wedding shower Thursday night and then the rehearsal on Friday night.  There was a bachelor party after the rehearsal so I headed home.

I went and picked up Cowboy yesterday morning.  Got up at 6 and was there about 9:30.  He was ready to go.  They had just shaved and bathed him but he needed a haircut.  We got back to Dallas and I took him to lunch.  It was a nice home cooking kind of place and he had chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy and corn and homemade rolls.  Huge servings but he ate every bite.

After that we looked for and found a barber and he got a haircut.  Then home to get dressed.  Cowboy wore a nice suit and his best hat.  I had bought him a new shirt.  He looked very nice.

Then off to the hotel for the wedding.  My daughter looked after Cowboy while I set up and played prior to the ceremony.  The ceremony was just beautiful.  Although it was hot out we were in the shade and there was a breeze.  This was followed by the reception.  We had drinks, crab cakes and coconut shrimp.  After the introductions, speeches, etc.  we were served salad of portabello mushrooms, tomatoes and cheese with watercress and dressing.  This was followed by salmon, candied baby carrots and broccolli.  Wonderful meal.  There was the garter retrieval, the bouquet being tossed and dancing.  Wonderful party.  Cowboy was totally worn out by 11 so we left and went home.

I helped Cowboy take his medicine, undress and get into bed.  He was snoring within 10 seconds (I swear) of hitting the pillow.  Did not stir all night.

When we arrived at the house I showed him around.  He didn't seem to recognize our belongings although most everything is the the furniture we have had for years.  He looked at the bed and said "where did you get this?".  He looked at a chair in the living room and said "when did you get this".

When I got up this morning my daughter told me she had wrenched her knee and was in severe pain.  We arranged for a friend to take her to the ER and I got Cowboy ready and left to take him back to the home.  Change of plans but I was concerned that my daughter might end up needing surgery and would need assistance.

Before I got back I learned that they had put my daughter's knee in a  brace, given her a prescription for a pain med and told her to make an appointment with an orthopedist come Monday.  May need some repair but won't know until she see the doctor.  Good news is she did not break anything.

The original plan was to go to my grandsons for a party and then take Cowboy back.  We had modified those plans given my daughter's injury.  Glad she is OK.

My new granddaughter in law is from Liberia.  She is half African and half Lebononese, and quite beautiful I must say.  She had a lot of relatives here for the wedding. They came from Liberia, California, New Jersey, Maryland, etc.   I have to say these folks know how to make a major event out of a marriage.  Shower on Thursday, bachelor party of Friday, wedding on Saturday, party all day Sunday.  They served a very spicy stewed chicken, a spicy rice and greens.  Lots of beer, lots of people and lots a loud African music.  I had spent five hours taking Cowboy back to the home, getting him settled and getting back and had no energy left for partying.  I stayed for awhile and had something to eat and then headed home.

The newlyweds leave for Puerto Rico for a week tomorrow.  My daughter will have to lay around and get waited on for a couple of days, my grandson is coming over to continue work on the yard and I guess I will try to get caught up on household matters tomorrow.  But first, I am going to not set the alarm.

wednesday July 9

I am way too busy but am coping

On July 3 I went to the home and we had a nice July 4th celebration.  Balloons, decorations, hot dogs, etc.  It was a good time.  The band from the nearby post played a concert and they were really good.  Cowboy seemed to really enjoy himself.  I had made a big batch of potato salad and got rave reviews.  Always makes you feel good.

On July 4th my daughter and her sons, their families, some friends all took the jet skies and went to the lake.  I chose to stay at home.  Just can't take so much activity.  and it was dreadfully hot.

On July 5 I went with my daughter to the mall and we found her a dress and shoes for the wedding.  Had a nice lunch at the Cheesecake Factory.  I had never been there before and it was very good but $7.50 for a piece of cheesecake?

Grandson #4 went with me to see his "Grandpa".  When we sat down for lunch the fellow who is sometimes a problem and bothers people came over and Cowboy got very angry.  He shouted at him and came up out of his chair and threatened to "kick his ass".  My grandson was just completely surprised.  He told me he had never seen his Grandpa angry.  I have seen him angry a number of times so I found that interesting.  He has always been very patient with the kids.  Anyway, the crisis passed and we had a nice lunch.

I went again  yesterday.  Cowboy was sitting outside. It  was hot but there was a nice breeze and the birds were singing.  He asked me why there was a wagon in the parking lot.  There was not wagon so he was seeing things.  I told it had been there earlier but was gone and I didn't know why it was there.

I didn't stay for lunch.  There are a fair number of activities with this wedding and I have to practice,  take the grandson to buy some shoes, pick up his rented tux, buy groceries, etc.  Tomorrow I am getting a haircut and a mani/pedi.

Tomorrow evening there is a shower and I stopped in at Bed, Bath and Beyond and bought here a gift for the shower.

Grandson #4 has a job interview Friday AM and I told him I would take him.  Then there is the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner Friday evening, the wedding on Saturday and a BarBQ on Sunday.

I will be picking Cowboy up Saturday morning for the festivities.  Grandson really wants him there.  Hope it goes OK.

Tuesday, July 1

Wow, it it really July?  It is hot enough to qualify.  It was 94 today.  Heard on the news last night that the average date for the first 100 degree day here is June 30  so we are behind schedule.

We had 25 people here on Saturday to celebrate great grandaughter # 2's birthday.  lots of kids, hot dogs, cake, etc.  A good time.  (I seriously need some rest!)

I told my daughter and soon to be grandaughter in law that I was working too hard.  No sympathy there.   Daughter said "but you are with family!!"

On Sunday we went to the hotel where the wedding will be next week and checked things out.  It is outside but will be shaded so hopefully will not be too hot.  The reception is indoors so it will be cool and comfortable.

I went to see Cowboy yesterday.  He was in really good spirits  We heard music playing when we came from his room to the dining area for lunch and he was holding onto the rail and dancing down the hall.

I brought him the Sunday comics which he always enjoys.  Terrible traffic due to construction getting there and I was too late to turn in a meal ticket so I just watched him eat.  He ate every bite.

The podiatrist was by and trimmed his toenails and checked his feet.  He has a blister but it is healing and all is well.  It is very important to watch his feet carefully but we are doing OK.

Grandson #4 and I went to Home Depot today and bought some more rock and stones to finish up in the back yard.  He has really enjoyed "designing" it and putting it together.  It is so hot and he has worked several hours most days to do the work.

Tomorrow I get a new dishwasher.  Always planned to replace it but had gotten totally frustrated with it and decided to just go ahead and replace it.  It would just pop open in the middle of a cycle, the seal was coming undone, etc.

Also will be picking up my dress for the wedding tomorrow.  always something going on.  We are having a Fourth of July celebration at the home on Thursday so also tomorrow must fix potato salad.  busy, busy.........

Friday, June 27

All the contracted work done has been completed.  yea!! I now have a sprinkler system but it has been raining nearly every day.  Grandson #4 is working on the yard as I write this.  He is really proud of his work.  He has moved rocks around, trimmed shrubs, established a flower bed and put down new ground cloth in some areas.  It is hot dirty work and he has been a trouper.

This place is beginning to feel like a home with pictures on the wall, dirty towels in the laundry and the music coming from the backyard as my grandson toils away.

Went to see Cowboy on Tuesday and again today.  He is doing fine.  We walked around and looked at the flower beds.  One has the mums we put in last year and two morning glory vines that are running amok over everything.  Another one is full of trash and needs work.  The new aide put watermelon seed in the third one.  Will be interesting to see if they come up.

Today the guys played with the bowling game.  Cowboy was really enjoying himself and there was another fellow that just grinned from ear to ear every time he pushed that ball.  There were three guys in wheelchairs that would just roll themselves up to the game and give it a go.  Fun to watch.

Every now and then I ask Cowboy questions to judge where his head is.  Today I asked him when we got married.  He got the date right but he thought we had been married 17 years. It has been 37.  I asked where we got married and he said Texas.  That is where we live now but we got married in Oklahoma.  I asked him how old he was and he said 104.  I told him he was 84 and he said " I thought I was older than that."

Tomorrow my daughter is having a party for her grandaughters 11th birthday.  It is a pool party.  She is really giving it a workout.  I suspect that will slow down after the new wears off.  I spent a long time yesterday at WalMart getting all the food, etc.  Other grandmother is bringing the cake and the decorations.  Should be fun.

Saturday; June 21

First day of summer.  How did this happen?  It is really warm.

I went to see Cowboy on Tuesday and stayed for the support meeting.  It starts at 5 and ends around 7.  By the time I get home it is past dark.  I just don't think there is enough to be gained from it to deal with the nighttime traffic in the Dallas area.

Cowboy was having problems with foot pain.  They took his boots off and discovered red areas and the beginnings of blisters.  They asked me to take them home.  Guess he will have to be happy with his diabetic shoes or his moccasins.  Very important to look after his feet since he is diabetic.   He took it better than I would have expected.

I now have 6 pair of custom made cowboy boots designed for size 13 AA.  and did I mention his feet are very flat?  I suspect there are very few folks out there with that shoe size.

I have spent all week on the house.  All of the boxes are unpacked and most of the things have found a home.  Still have a ton of pics and videos and the stuff on the walls from the old house that need to figure out what to do with but am feeling like we are almost there.

The sprinkler system was supposed to be finished yesterday but they still have a little bit to do.  Guess it will be Monday.  That is the end of the work that is contracted.  yea !!

Grandson number 4 has been here for the last three days helping me.   We have started on the yard.  Lots to do but I am into it.

I plan to go see Cowboy tomorrow.  I talked to him in the phone yesterday and he is fine but is impatient that I haven't been to see him.  It has been a complicated week with all the work being done.  I am so glad it is almost all done.

Sunday, June 15

More boxes are now unpacked and there is light at the end of the tunnel.  I am beginning to feel really good about the house.  Just six more boxes to go.

Then I will have to turn my attention to the yard.  Lots of things to think about there.

I went to see Cowboy yesterday and took him his boot jack.  He still has some trouble getting his boots off but am thinking it will be OK.  He was complaining about the way his toenails are cut and asked me to help him with them.  I tried but think it is mostly in his head.

The landscape is changing with the seasons.  Instead of wildflowers the landscape is dominated by fields of corn and sunflowers.  I love the sunflowers.  I never knew it was a crop in these parts.  Lots are grown in west Texas but didn't know about here.  Maybe it is a new thing.

Today I spent a lot of time with the Dallas Sunday paper and several hours watching TV and then two more in the pool having a drink and visiting with my daughter.  Nice relaxing and restful day (and much needed).

My daughter leaves tomorrow for Phoenix and I will have the house to myself this next week.  Will just keep working.

I have to go pick up my dress for the wedding this week and see what alterations might be needed.  Also will start practicing the music this week for the wedding.

I plan to go to see Cowboy on Tuesday afternoon and stay over for the support meeting.  Haven't been for several months now.

Wednesday, June 11e

The plumber came and all I needed was to replace a small section of pipe and it totaled $200.  I am still a bit miffed but may not be worth pursuing.    The next thing is to have the new tile put in the two bathrooms and then put in the new toilet and new cabinet.  Then I just need to clean the wood work and see if any painting needs to be done there.  I am thinking I can handle that.

I spent yesterday putting away things and unpacking boxes.  It is slow but steady.  I am working really hard and I hurt all over but progress is being made.

My daughter is home this week and we went and bought some pool toys yesterday.  It included a lounger for me and a combination volley ball, basketball and some other game in one.  Then we went out to eat and I ordered ribs.  Naughty me but it was really good.

My daughter is excited about having the birthday party for her oldest granddaughter here the end of the month with games, food, etc.   We are busy working out the details.  She even has a friend who is going to be a DJay.

I went to see Cowboy today.  He had on his cowboy boots and was a happy camper.   I hope we don't have any problems with it.  He didn't say a word for about 18 months about his boots and now they seem to be the only thing on his mind.  I will have to find his boot jack and take it to him.  Traffic was good today, no slow downs or crazy drivers in sight.

They had pasta primavera today and it was only barely passable.  The other wives said it is the third day for pasta in a row.  There is something weird about this sudden change in the usually wonderful meals that are served at the home.  I am going to stay over next week and go to the support group meeting and see what they say.  There are some rather upset wives.

I came home today feeling really tired.  I think I overdid it yesterday trying to unpack, etc. My hand and arm really hurt.   I can sleep in tomorrow and maybe do a bit less work.  I am just so anxious to get all the boxes unpacked and things put away.

There are several items on the table right now waiting to be repaired.  I think we had more damage with this move than any I have ever experienced.  Despite that most things made it OK.  I still have items from the 1970's that are intact.  But I need to glue back horns on a wood carving and some legs on another wood carving   I bought some artificial flowers and greenery for my daughter and put them in a nice little vase for her bathroom.  Things are beginning to look nice.

Friday, June 6

I was concerned wouldn't get to pick up Cowboy's glasses so called and asked that they mail them to him, care of the social worker.  I called her and told her to let him have one pair when they came.

The painters finished on Wednesday and it looks beautiful.  They helped me move some of the furniture into place but didn't seem any too happy about it.  They were more tired than I.  Just beginning to feel like things are getting done and soon will have a "normal" home.  Then in the evening I noticed water on the floor in my bedroom. First thought it was from a paint bucket or something and the painters had done it.  Upon further investigation I discovered water was coming into the bedroom from the other end of the room and there was water the whole length of the room on one side.  horrors !! now what.

Let us return to that time when we had the inspector out before we bought the house.  He had identified a faucet leak on the east side of the house.  It was supposedly fixed.  I had checked it after I moved in and couldn't turn it on with my arthritic hands and had just let it go.  Well, guess what folks, there is a break in the pipe in the slab and they had just plugged up around the faucet and not actually fixed the problem.  The painters turned on the faucet to clean brushes and such and that caused the water to come in the house.  As long as the faucet is not turned on it is OK so mopped up and am waiting on the plumber on Tuesday.

I have some homework to do but I think it will be appropriate to go back to the sellers and raise some heck.  I have a home warranty that will cover the repair of the leak but what about the floor and the woodwork and all that?  Insurance has a $2000 deductible.  The fun just goes on and on.  I just thought I had my bedroom just right.

I have a lot of product left over and had been thinking about putting the new tile the two smaller bathrooms and was in the process of looking into that.  Will still have some to turn in for credit, or maybe not.

I went to see Cowboy yesterday.  His glasses had arrived but the social worker had given them to the dept head and they were still on her desk.  They wanted them labeled with his name.  I took a bit of tape and put his name on it and wrapped it around the side piece.

He wants me to bring him some of his cowboy boots.  I talked to the physical therapist and we made a deal.  I am going to take them to the therapist and he is going to see if Cowboy can walk OK with them.  He talked to Cowboy and asked him if he got his boots would he use his walker.  Cowboy said "I don't know".  He is convinced he doesn't need it anymore and it is a challenge to get him to use it.

We had a nice lunch and he seems in pretty good spirits.  Traffic was terrible coming and going.  ugh

Saturday, May 31

As mentioned the counter tops were supposed to go  on Wednesday.  The plumber showed up first thing just as the folks called and said had a sick employee and couldn't make it today.  Ends up the first date we could agree on was next Monday.  Of course I have stuff stacked everywhere to empty the cabinets and removed all the drawers and they are stacked exactly where the painters were going to start.

Sent the plumber away and started trying the figure out how to handle both painters and counter top people the same day.  Some good news, the floor was finished on Thursday and it looks beautiful.  I had them leave the furniture apart and out from the walls for the painters so I am stepping over things.

Thursday my phone died.  Not a good time with all this activity.  Went to AT&T and they reset it and said that was the problem.  Only thing is it still won't charge.  Went where I bought it second hand and the warranty had expired (30 days).  Went to a cell phone repair.  The guy said I needed a new charger.  The place was messy and he was messy and I chose not to go buy a charger but to look for a different repair place.  The next place said the receptacle for the cord was corroded.  Left it for him to repair.  Here I am, no phone with all these contractors in various stages of planning, a hubby in a nursing home, my children unaware of my problem.  Interesting how dependent we have become on our "toys".

When I went back he said it was not the receptacle but the battery and to go to another one of their stores to get a battery.  Went and bought the battery, took it home and plugged it in and still would not charge.  Now I go to Best Buy and buy a charger and take it home and it works and charges and everything.  Boy, it is a jungle out there.

Friday I went to the store and started preparing taco fixins for 25 people.  It is not easy when your pots and skillets are put up over the cabinets, your knives are in a drawer "somewhere" and where are the tea towels, etc.  Got it done despite the gods conspiring against me.

This morning daughter #2 and I drove to see Cowboy.  That was after I arose early, cut up the lettuce and tomatoes, cut my finger in the process, got everything all in the car and stopped for breakfast for my starving daughter.

We provided enchiladas, tacos, chips, pop, etc for the staff at the home today.  It was a great time, the food was good and they were very appreciative.  My tacos were complimented by all.

Cowboy was in a good humor and we walked around a bit.  He was really having trouble getting his right leg to work.  He was going very slow and seemed frustrated as his brain told his leg to move and it just stood there.  Mostly we sat outside

When they tested his blood sugar this morning it was only 66 so we skipped the insulin.  That has been happening some lately and concerns me.  Need to put it on my list to discuss with the Dr.

Cowboy's glasses came in this week so I will need to go to Ft Hood and get them and take them to him some time this week.  Also had to argue with the dentist this week about a bill they sent that I had already paid.

Tuesday, May 27

Daughter number 1 arrived this past Wednesday.  Her son picked her up and they came to the house and we mostly visited and spent some time in the pool and had cocktails.  The son had lots of work and left early afternoon.  He was able to help me identify some cable under the carpet upstairs that I couldn't figure out.  It went to a sensor for smoke on the first floor.  Problem solved.

On Thursday my daughter made a trip to see her biological father who lives near Lake Texoma.  He will not travel to see anyone so they had not seen each other in several years.  They had a nice visit and I am glad that is so.

On Friday my daughter and I went looking for fabric.  She was interested in some different things than what she can find at home at Hobby Lobby and JoAnn's.  I had researched this on the internet and had discovered a bunch of fabric warehouses.  I suspect it is because Dallas is a fashion center and a lot of clothing is created here.  It turned into quite an adventure.

First you have to be OK to travel to a rather seedy part of the city.  The warehouses line the streets for a couple of blocks.  There is fabric, ready made stuff, ribbons, quilting stuff, upholstery fabric and odds and ends.  You have to be willing to spend some time and effort but wow, the bargains !!

My daughter found several very beautiful pieces of fabric and some notions and we considered the whole day a success .

On Saturday we drove down to see Cowboy.  He was in a good humor and it was a nice day.  We had a good visit.

On Sunday my other daughter, who had come home from being out of town, went with us and we shopped at this very large mall.  It was a bit of a disappointment.  So many of the stores cater to the young girls and the fashions are skimpy, poorly made, way too revealing and I am so glad that I am not raising daughters in this climate.

On Monday we went to a Garden Ridge and looked at a lot of junk but did find a couple of cool things.  We also went to Tuesday Morning, which I like and came away with a couple of items.  We then went to Razzoo's for lunch and headed to a small town near here which has lots of cool shops. Last night my grandson #1, son of daugher #1 and his very permanent girlfriend came over for dinner.  My daughter fixed spaghetti and we made a pineapple cake.  Nice evening.  They did some catching up.

I ended feeling totally worn out but it was fun to see how excited my daughter about some of things we saw.  She lives in the country in upstate NY in a totally different world from here.

We spent today getting everything out of the kitchen in preparation for the installation of the countertop.  I am so looking forward to that.  I took my daughter to the airport after lunch and have been trying to catch up on correspondence and bills since then.

I have a plateful of things to do in the next few weeks but things are rolling along, Cowboy is doing well and all the kids are doing well.  Can't ask for more.

Tuesday, May 20

The flooring people started yesterday.  I love the tile. Spent some time today trying to decide on colors for the walls.

The house is a mess and furniture is piled in all the wrong places.  I am sitting in my empty living room on an office chair on a concrete floor.  There are four workmen and two are working on the downstairs and two upstairs.  Will take several days.

My daughter who lives in NY will be here tomorrow for a weeks' visit.  I am looking forward to seeing her but feel bad that everything is in such disarray.  She is going to spend some time with her eldest son who lives in Dallas and take one day to go see her biological father who lives near Lake Texoma.

We will also take a day to go see Cowboy and a couple of days to shop and mess around.  Since she lives in a rural area being where there is so much shopping is a treat.  We are going to look for fabric for her.  She can also help me with some of the chores that need doing around here.

My other daughter will be home Friday and will stay until Monday so we will get in some visiting.

I am staying very busy and have not had time to be lonely or bored.  I am a bit of a neat freak though and all this mess is stressful.  I suspect it will take weeks to get things in place and take a breath.

Talked to my two sisters and they are still planning on visiting but looks like it will be in the fall.  I really want them to come but maybe it is not a bad thing that it will be a little while.  I had five sisters but two are gone and I really want to have some time together.  One lives in New Mexico and one in Colorado so it is not like they are right around the corner.

Saturday, May 17

I went to see Cowboy today.  Left early and it was an uneventful drive, although I never cease to be amazed at some people's driving habits and the risks they take.

He was in a good humor and he liked the hat I brought him.  It is a keeper !

Cowboy looked like he had not had a shave in about four days.  They got two new men in this week and one fellow passed away.  I suspect they have been very busy, even overwhelmed.  There is a new fellow name "Billy" who is a constant challenge for them.  He just won't settle down or follow any kind of instruction.  He moves around the furniture, pesters everyone, etc.  So hard to watch.

The scenery on the drive is changing.  The grass is dry and yellow.  Most of the flowers that are left are yellow and white.  The hay is being cut.  The hay fields are golden, the corn fields are dark green.  It is like a kaleidescope in slow motion.

This week the trees got trimmed, the deposit to the sprinkler company got sent, the china got fixed and I spent quite a bit of time cleaning up the yard.  I had a couple promise to come take up the carpet.  Well they promised to come on Thursday, again on Friday and then again today.  Claim they were stood up by a couple of guys that were going to help them.  So much for Craigs list and depending on people to do what they say they are going to do.  The fence got put up and the addition of slats to the pergola means it is now shadier so we are making progress.  Flooring job starts Monday and the countertop goes in on the 28th.

I was driving on a main thoroughfare on Thursday.  It is four lanes wide plus a lane coming in off the interstate that turns into a right turn only lane.  I am changing lanes from the second lane to the third lane across and managed to collide with another car.  Not sure if he came off the interstate and changed lanes at the same time as I did or what but it was a very minor fender bender.  I was fine and he was fine and we exchanged insurance information and went on our way.   No police were called.  I suspect it is going to end up costing me my deductible of $1000.  I have two small scratches and a dent on the passenger side door and the wheel is scraped.  sigh......the hard part is I have not had an accident in 35 years except for backing into a post a few years ago.

My daughter was home today from California.  She went and picked up her oldest grandaughter who is 11 and a little friend of hers and they got a manicure, went for pizza and then came back here and went swimming.  Theyhave  had a really good time.  They are spending the night here and are upstairs watching TV.  Other than coming down for popcorn and soda they have been very quiet up there, watching TV.

Wednesday, May 14n

I have been one busy puppy of late.  Last week I met with folks interested in taking the carpet I am taking up.  I posted it on Craigs list.  Have some folks interested but no firm offer yet.  Got to get it out of here by Monday the 19th or pay the flooring company $600 to take it up and throw it away.  That seems such a waste.  It is nearly new.

I got quotes on trimming the trees and a sprinkler system.  Man, the money is flying out of here like crazy.  I got stood up by the painter that was suggested to me so am going to have to find someone else.  The posts got set for the new fence across the sides and they are coming back this week to finish the fence and put additional slats across the pergola to block more sun.

I went to see Cowboy on Tuesday and Friday this past week and again yesterday.  He is doing fine.  He tends to be OK as long as he is left alone.  He has made a couple of pretty good friends but doesn't really get close to anyone.  Seems very guarded.  He doesn't have much patience with people who yell or get in his face or annoy him but mostly everything is peaceful and calm.

He told me he broke his glasses and when I took a look at them, there is a lense that popped out and a bent sidepiece.  I brought them home.  Will see if they can be repaired.  My guess is not and I will need to order him new ones.  This was his backup pair.  The originals disappeared some time back.

We are now on hat number 3 and hopefully when I take it to him he will like it.  He used to always buy a summer straw hat and now that I think about it he would try on 6 or so before deciding he had found one he liked.  Hope number 3 is a keeper.

My grandson wants his grandpa to come to his wedding in July.  We are going to try to figure out a way to do that.  The big issue is whether he will stay in his chair and not soil himself.

Last Wednesday I went shopping again with his fiance and bought me a dress to wear.  It is really quite nice.  They didn't have the color we need in my size so it has been ordered.  Now I have to find a pair of shoes.

On Saturday we had grandson #2, his children and fiance, a friend of his with two more children, my daughter's former boss and his wife and my daughters BFF all sitting around our pool.  The kids had a great time.  We had hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans, chips, fruit, wine and beer.  The party went from 1PM to 7PM.  I got in the pool and swam a couple of times.  It was not bad.  My daughter had bought a lounger and I tried to get on it and tipped it over.  Again I tried and the darn thing went "POP" and deflated.  I broke it or tore it and busted it or whatever.  Well, at least we had a good laugh.

Sunday my daughter took me to eat and to a movie.  We had a good time, very relaxed.  I ate a lot of popcorn, shame on me.

On Monday I finally got my china hutch repaired.  A fellow came who specializes in leaded glass.  $350.  He insisted I pay him and then get my money from the moving company so I have mailed them the receipt and will hope they come through.

I am trying to catch my breath.  Too much going on.  They start on the floors on Monday.  Got a call about installing the countertop but they are ignoring my call backs.

Monday, May 5

I went to see Cowboy Saturday.  Trying to see about traffic and which is better, Sunday or Saturday.  There was a bit more on Saturday but not bad either way.

The bluebonnets have faded quite a bit but there are large quantities of bright yellow and orange flowers now, sometimes they go on for hundreds of yards.  It is so nice to see.

Cowboy was in a good humor and we walked around outside for quite some time.  The weather was beautiful.  There was a squirrel in the grass and Cowboy fixated on him and just stood watching him for the longest.  Everything is getting green and looks so fresh.  The aides planted seeds in the beds.  I guess there were not funds to put in flowers.  I just am not sure they are going to get anything but there are a few sprouts coming up.

Saturday night I got a call from the home.  Cowboy had become irritated with another resident and punched him in the stomach.  No one was hurt.  He is now "under supervision".  There are a couple of new fellows who are highly irritating, won't leave you alone, yell at you, etc.  I suspect that is what happened but they won't tell me who it was.

I spent Friday going to shop with the fiance of grandson # 2.  It was fun.  Boy, weddings have sure become big business.  It makes me a little uncomfortable.  So much money is being spent.  They have "stylists" to consult with and all these things to consider.

My daughter got home yesterday but was very tired and we didn't do anything.  Did take a short swim about 4.  The water is still very cold so we didn't stay in long.

I am still pondering about the yard.  Think will use a lot of rock.  This area is in extreme drought so seems wrong to have grass and a pool.  Ah, the American way of life.

Thursday, May 1

A new month....wow, how time flies !  Been in the new house almost a month.  So much still to do.  I just do a little every day.

On Tuesday I spent almost all day outside, picking up sticks and leaves.  Have a fellow that is going to add some more slats to the pergola over the deck and also put in new fence in the sections that face the front.  The other sides seem to belong to the neighbors.  All is pretty nice except the back and that house if for sale so will need to wait and negotiate with the new owner.

I have starting thinking about landscaping and a sprinkler system but can't quite get my head around it.  May use a lot of rock and some cacti type plants to minimize water usage.

I went to see Cowboy yesterday.  He was feeling pretty chipper.  It was cool and he had been outside quite a bit before I even got there.  We watched some TV and then sat in the common room for a while.   It seems like every time I go there is someone new.

A couple of the ladies with whom I have become friends were telling me that one of the new residents, Chester, has a wife that has to drive quite a ways to get there, is feeling terribly guilty and seems a little demented herself.  They were concerned about her.  We talked to the social worker about it and will follow up.  She seems very sweet but rather timid.  We do try to look after each other.

Today was productive.  I actually went to a car wash and cleaned up my car and vacuumed it myself.  Haven't done that in years.  I am used to just driving in and letting someone else do the whole job.  I can't seem find a similar place here.  It wasn't too hard.

I mailed some things, went and picked up a stool cover my daughter wanted and went looking for a Michaels.  Had gone on line and got a coupon and had been there before but I just couldn't find the place.
This  big old city can be a challenge.  I ate out and went to WalMart to get some watches batteries changed.  They said that if you didn't buy the watch there they would not replace the battery.  That was news.  Anyhow I went to a place called "Batteries Plus" and they took care of me.

I posted the carpet in the house on Craigslist today.  I learned that if I take it up it will save me $600 on the flooring bill.  Also am going to sell one chair.  The living room is a bit crowded here.  Need to get something with a much smaller footprint.

Tomorrow I am going to meet Grandson #2's bride to be and go with her to the bridal shop for a dress.  It should be fun.  They have asked me to play for the wedding, which is in July.  I really like her.  He is fortunate to have found her.

I am right this minute making chicken noodle soup for later, cooking veggies for fajitas for dinner and trying to be done by the time Wheel of Fortune comes on.  Gotta run......
