Saturday, August 23

You should see me trying to wrap my daughters leg in saran wrap and a plastic bag so she can shower. It is quite a process.  Then there is the two bags of ice a day for her equipment that ices her knee and those stairs.  whew !  my fridge won't hold but two bags of ice so we go buy ice every day.  But she is doing well and has quit being so cranky.  We have two physical therapy sessions under the belt.

Yesterday Cowboy's youngest daughter came over with her brood.  She has an almost 13 year old going into 7th grade and almost 10 year triplets. Hubby is a teacher and he stayed home trying to get ready for the start of school on Monday.

They had a ball in the pool and were playing outside from 3 PM until 8 PM with a time out for some burgers and hot dogs with the trimmings.  My daughter had insisted we get a charcoal grill and I was out there trying to get it lit (prefer gas, thank you very much).   I had made cupcakes earlier in the day for them.

When we were cleaning up I picked up the bag of charcoal that was not used and the bottom fell out.  It had gotten wet.  What a mess.  All over the deck of the pool we have charcoal dust.  Too tired to clean it up tonight.  Will get to it tomorrow.  I am even a little sun burned, not good.

Woke up this morning, hauled ice upstairs, wrapped up daughters leg, brought her some cereal, etc.
Just heard from daughters oldest son, grandson #2.  They are coming over today, his first chance to visit since her surgery.   His wife was over Tuesday night with the kids but he had to work.

I am going to go see Cowboy tomorrow.  He continues to amaze.  He is going down but it is slower than a lot of the fellows there.  We have watched several of them go down and pass away this past year and a half.   It brings meaning to the term they use in the group sessions "anticipatory grief". I can't help but think about it a lot.  I think what the doctor said is true.   He is "one tough old bird".  I am grateful for every day that I can make him smile, or get a hug or hold his hand.

Tuesday, August 19

My daughter had her surgery yesterday.  We arrived at the surgery center at 9:30.  She went for the surgery at 11 and they were finished at about 12:30.  We went for the follow up today and they told us her tissues were very healthy and they said the surgery went well.  She now has a screw in her knee as well as a bunch of stitches that will eventually dissolve as well as another larger screw that is made of a biological material that will be absorbed slowly by her body over the next 3 years.  and then some of the damaged tissue was replaced with material from a cadaver.  Wow, the wonders of what can be done today.  Today they showed us part of the video of the surgery and gave us a copy so we can watch the whole thing later if we want.  On crutches for 6 weeks and can't even bend her leg for several days.  Quite a lot of pain last night but after tonight it will start getting better.

There are a lot of interesting details about how they do things these days but I won't go into all of it.  It just fascinates me, I find it amazing.  She started physical therapy today and goes back on Thursday so I am going to see Cowboy tomorrow.   Her son can look after her.  He is still painting baseboards but we are almost done.

God must have been planning things for us because it is a good thing I am here during this time.  She could not have managed without support.  I sure have climbed those stairs more than I would like but I am managing.

Talked to my daughter in NY today and we decided I will come up there between Thanksgiving and Christmas.  We can go to the city and see the beautiful decorations and do some shopping and go to a Broadway show.  My sisters had planned on coming this fall but one of them is still fighting about getting her roof fixed so we all decided to wait until spring.  I told them we are not getting any younger, need to do this soon.  So I have my trip in October to Easter Europe and then NY in December and family coming in the spring.  Sounds nice.  Hope to maybe get to Peru next year but no plans made yet.

Sunday, August 17

I can't even remember how I managed to go a whole week without thinking about posting.  Maybe I just think my notes are getting a bit stale.  And then I will hear from someone who reads it and realize there are some folks who are interested.

I went to see Cowboy on Tuesday.  He was very non communicative.  Just stared most of the time.  He did eat his lunch and let them shave him.  The heat means he is not spending as much time outside.

Lots of errands this week....haircut, pedicure, some shopping and supervising my worker (grandson).

I went to see Cowboy again yesterday.  I saw the aide in the hall and she showed me some pictures that they took Friday night at the horse show.  She said Cowboy had a wonderful time.

When they were standing in line to get their tickets there was a lady behind them who just talked and talked and acted like she knew everything there was to know about how they trained the horses.  Cowboy leaned over to Bobbie (the aide) and said "I wish she would shut the hell up" just clear as a bell.  She was worried he was going to get difficult but he didn't.  whew......

I told the aide my visits were going to be a little less often this coming week and maybe the following week.  Have to drive my daughter to therapy, etc.  She said she would be sure and give him extra hugs and a treat or two.

They got special treatment at the show.  They took them down to the gate and let them interact with the horses.  She took a couple of pictures of Cowboy petting one of the horses.  Said he didn't act tired or sleepy all evening.

I talked to him about the field trip and he said he liked it.  Said they went to a Chinese restaurant ???? and he had 6 fingers and put his hands about 8 inches apart "this big".  I asked if he had anything else. He said no.

I haven't done much today.   Will be wrapped up in my daughters surgery and follow up the next few days.  Hope it all goes well.

Saturday, August 9

It has been nearly or over 100 all week.  Terribly hot.   We have suspended working outside and are concentrating on getting the woodwork done.  Grandson is making good progress.

Got the drapes up in the living and dining rooms and the rods bought for my bedroom.  The first ones I bought would not work.  Wow, four months I have been at this.  Of course, it has been punctuated with dips in the pool, shopping trips, weddings, etc. but still......

I went to see Cowboy on Monday and Thursday this week.  Traffic was not half bad either day.  or am I just adjusting to the craziness?  It is pretty light going but always heavy coming home.  No slowdowns lately.

Cowboy has been doing pretty well lately although his speech is generally garbled and he can't make sentences that make sense. I continue to worry that he will fall.   He smiles easily and is spending more time interacting with others.  The new activity aide is really good with him.

She asked me if I thought he would do well on a field trip to go see a horse show next week.  I gave permission and paid the $17.  It is the Lipizaner stallions.  We saw them once many years ago in Germany.  I know he will love it.

My friend's hubby passed on Tuesday so she is not going to be there anymore.  She was always there for lunch, every single day.  I will miss her.  sweet lady.

I think I will stay in out of the heat today.  Yesterday I got up, went to pick two internet orders, at WalMart and at Penney's.  Both ladies were ungodly slow and it took a while.   Bought some groceries and came back and picked up Grandson to go do banking and postal chores.  'Then we went to Peter Piper Pizza which just opened up.  It is kind of a cross between Cici's (cheap but awful pizza) and Chuckee Cheese (games and lots of kids and noise).  Won't be going back there.

I think the kids are going to take the jet ski's out today.  I won't be going.  Too dang hot for me.

Monday, August 4

I went to see Cowboy on Friday and he was doing OK.  We sat outside.  It was cooler than usual and the birds were active.  He was fretting because the bird feeder was empty.

I didn't do much on Saturday....a little laundry, pulled a few weeds.  Nice restful day.   I got the electronic copies of the wedding pictures.  There are over 300 of them so will take a while to go through them and pick out a few.

Sunday was Grandson # 4's birthday.  His brother and family came over after church and we had pizza and a birthday cake and then everyone spent the entire afternoon in the pool.  Very nice day.

I went to see Cowboy again today.  We just watched TV and had lunch.  One of the ladies husband is very bad and expected to pass at any time.  She was distressed and sad.  Lots of family there.  I went to see him and told him I missed his kisses and we never got to dance.  He is in a coma so no way to know if he is hearing anything.  Somehow I doubt it.

One of the aides came by and said she and Cowboy had been keeping the birdbath filled and seed in the feeders.  He has put himself in charge of that.  The flower beds are completely destroyed, courtesy of "Billy" who is really having a hard time with everything.  I feel for him but he is destructive, annoying and unmanageable.

Came back home to a pile of little tasks to complete in the next couple of days.  Hope to have grandson start on painting of baseboards this week.  Still haven't finished yesterdays paper.
