Sunday, June 30

I bought a new bow on Wednesday and also went to the container store.  Not much else I need from anywhere.  Did have a nice lunch at Marie Callendars with a couple of my neighbors/friends.

Thursday I had the fellow that put in the gate on the patio out.  It was rusted something awful.  Turns out part of it wasn't painted properly before he installed it.  Got that taken care of.

My neighbor/pianist and I played at the church here in our community for the dementia day care group.  They really enjoyed themselves today.  Made us bath feel good.

My handyman came by in the PM and I got my HVAC filter changed out, the old drapery rod in the bedroom removed and the new one installed.  He also removed the rails around the stool in the master bath. It was really hard to keep it clean and this will solve that problem.  I don't need the rails.

I took a really good walk Friday morning and managed to mostly piddle the rest of the day away.  When I went to see Cowboy yesterday he asked me what I had been doing and I had a hard time remembering.  Maybe I should worry about myself !  No actually, the grocery store, the drugstore, Home Depot and breakfast at McDonald's can do number on your time.

I also bought some begonias Friday and got up yesterday morning early and took them to the home.  The zinnias all gave up the ghost.  I wanted to get them removed and the begonias in before it got too hot.  High yesterday was about 106.  Cowboy came out and held the trash bag for me and helped me place the new plants.    It was only 9AM but already very warm so we got that finished and went back inside and watched a John Wayne movie in the day room with some of the other fellows.

Pete (oh Pete, what a mess you are!)  walked his wheelchair over to us and parked right in front of the TV.  Cowboy was peeking around him to see the movie.  Pete just stared at him and pretty soon Cowboy says (in a very loud voice)  "What are you staring at??!  He was downright irritated.  Not good to get between Cowboy and a John Wayne movie.

I was invited to attend a rodeo by a neighbor.  It is a fund raiser and she had paid for 2 boxes.  She invited several people and we all had a really good time.  Fortunately, we were on the side where the sun went down behind us instead of in our faces.  We ate pizza, funnel cakes and drank lemonade.  Just a bunch of grandmas at the rodeo.  One of the bunking broncs literally fell into the rail right in front of us.  That was a little scary and there was a fair bit of dirt kicked up our way.  One of the downsides of front row seats.

It was late when we got home and I slept in this morning.  Am doing laundry but have to leave in a bit.  Am playing at a cocktail party in a couple of hours and have to go set up.

Wednesday, June 25

Last Saturday I skipped dulcimer jam and went over to see Cowboy.  Am trying this twice a week schedule to see how he does with it.  He greeted me and was happy to see me.  No mention that it had been a bit longer.  He was feeling pretty chipper.

We went out and surveyed the flowers.  The zinnias look terrible but everything else looks great.  I am beginning to think it is the lack of full sun.  The area in the back of the facility is very green and shaded and has lots of squirrels and birds and such.  Very pleasant if it weren't so hot.

We had lunch and visited and watched some TV and I visited with some of the wives that were there.  It seems I managed to miss the support group meeting this month.  Got no notification.  There has to be a better way.

On Sunday I spent time with the paper, washed the sheets and other laundry and did a lot of reading.  I did get out and take a long walk again this morning.  Have to figure out a way to do that most every day.

On Monday I went for a follow up on the hearing aids.  I am doing well and they definitely help so have decided to keep them.  (What's a couple of grand?  ha ha)  I also met with a pianist to practice for a gig we are doing on Thursday at one of the local dementia day care locations.  We refreshed ourselves on some things we have done before.  I really like having the keyboard that we can carry in and use.  It sounds really good and the pianist is very creative in using the different settings.  Then we are doing a gig on Sunday for a neighbor who is having a cocktail party for a 75 years lady's birthday.  Should be kind of cool.

I went to see Cowboy today.   Didn't get up early enough to take a long walk but did go around the block and had a good breakfast at home and then headed over.  We watched TV and had lunch.  Cowboy didn't want to go outside and I didn't push it.  It is nearly 100 degrees and I worry about his ability to cool himself.

I came home and worked on catching up on a few "piles" of mail, etc. and called and arranged to have someone give me a quote on a cover for the rest of the patio.  Need shade to really enjoy being out there.

They came this afternoon and am waiting for the quote.

I got a call this morning from the mechanic and they have located parts for the Maserati.  Should have the work done this week.  hurray !  Then I have will that thing cleaned up and deodorized and then talk to a body person.

It 's kind of an interesting journey.  This car was a joint project between Maserati and Chrysler and between Iacocca and the fellow who owned Maserati at the time. Both company's were struggling to survive and were trying to come up with ideas.   Apparently, they cooked up a plan that Chrysler would sell this vehicle after Maserati built it and shipped it to the USA for sale.  Problem was, it was so expensive no one would buy them and only a few were sold.  I have this rather unique automobile that may be valuable and may be worthless, who knows?    Isn't quite a success story that Iacoca had with the Mustang.  Good news is if I can get it road worthy I can enjoy driving around in it.  Cowboy had a Italian sports car when I met him (a Fiat spider)  so would be so cool to take it over and take him for a drive.  Bottom line, it is a very good distraction from brooding about the side of my life that I have no control over.

Friday, June 21

This week has flown by.  I don't think I even remember what all I did.

I went to see Cowboy on Wednesday.  He was asleep when I got there so I woke him up and we talked for a little while and then he went back to sleep.  Mostly I read the paper and watched TV and every now and then he would wake up and we would talk for a while.  Awfully hot, not a good day to go outside.  He seems pretty content.

I came back home and went to a demo at a friends house on a product called Norwex.  It is different kinds of microfiber products.  Bought a few things.  Not really sure they are quite as great as represented so did a little research when I got home.  You can buy the products on Amazon.  Some are less expensive and some are a little more.  Interesting.   Will try them.

Yesterday I spent the day trying to catch up on some things.  Had some music to organize, some pictures to file on the computer, etc.

I went this morning for a follow up mammogram.  I had scheduled it too soon and they sent me home.  Will need to go back next month.  Medicare will only pay for the follow up after a full six months have passed.  Not a big thing.  I am not particularly concerned.  They found a tiny little cyst six months ago and we are following up on that.

I then went to JC Penney and looked at draperies for the bedroom.   They had a really good sale and I had a coupon and ended up ordering some draperies for the bedroom.  Should be all I will do on my redecorating of my house.

I had lunch at the Panda Chinese fast food place and had enough to bring some home for dinner.  I love their food but it is way too much.  I think I could easily make three meals off of their portions for one meal.  Anyhow, it took care of my evening meal.

Plan to get up in the morning and head over to see Cowboy.  Will probably stay through lunch.

Had a bad night last night.  I woke up about 3 and laid there until about 5.  Got up several times with the "green apple trots".  Yesterday bought some bruschetta and some garlic bagel crisps and ate them.  I think that is what did it.  I threw out what was left today.  My tummy is just not as tolerant as it used to be.

Monday, June 17

I was proud of myself this morning.  I got up before 7, put on some shorts and went and walked almost 2 miles.  I really moved fast and ended up sweaty and out of breath but they tell me that is what I need to be.

Came back, cleaned up and went and got the car washed, filled it up and went to see my local friendly mechanic about the Maserati.  I told him I didn't mean he could take the next 6 months when I said I was not in a hurry.  We kind of have a deal that he will spend time looking for parts and scheduling work behind their other customers and in return he is discounting the work.  I think I lit a small fire under him this morning.

The rest of my morning was spent dusting and cleaning the bathrooms.  Such exciting stuff.

Went to band practice this afternoon and just got home.  It is soooo hot.  I keep checking the flowers on the patio but so far they are doing OK.  I have a pot of succulents out there that is sprouting all kind of little blooms.  So cool.

I had filled the bird feeder last week and it was all gone yesterday I filled it again yesterday.  It was empty again this morning.  I think the deer must be eating it.  There was some disturbed soil around the tree where it hangs.  Don't plan to fill it again anytime soon.  Can't keep feeding the deer.

Think there is some Jeopardy in my afternoon and then leftover meatloaf for dinner.  Ho hum.....

Saturday, June 15

I got up Thursday AM and went over to see Cowboy.  I enjoyed a stop to get an Egg McMuffin (one of my favorite breakfasts, although I am sure it is full of things I shouldn't eat, but only 300 calories !)

When I arrived we went out to the outside area and walked around.  We inspected the flowers, pulled a few weeds and sat on a bench for a period of time.  The flowers are doing well except for the zinnias.  Hard to understand, they are so hard to kill.  Maybe not enough sun.  They are shaded a good part of the day.

He was in good spirits.  We had lunch, meatloaf, fried okra and mashed potatoes.   Why do I think their head chef must be from the south.  Pretty good but Cowboy didn't eat very much.  He did eat his brownie and drink his milk.

I continue to fight fatigue.  Just old age, I guess.  I sleep the right number of hours but my sleep is often interrupted by weird and very vivid dreams.  I toss and turn a lot lately.

Friday was a good day.  I went to the grocery store early to avoid the crowds and then came back and was the driver of three ladies to our monthly luncheon.  We went to a place called "Jack Allen's"  which was VERY GOOD.  The ladies I was with had heard of the opening of a new cupcake place near where we live and I agreed to swing by there going home.  It is called "Gigi's" and is currently operating out of a trailer but will soon be in its space.  I got one for me and one for Cowboy for Father's Day.  So much sugar!  It was good but mercy, it was sweet.

I went to dulcimer practice this morning and had a good time.  They are such a sweet bunch of people.  Don't have another gig until August and I plan to be in NY then so the next gigs for me with the dulcimer group are in September.  Still have some gigs with the band this month and next.  I kind of need a break so am glad the schedule is not heavy.

Spent the afternoon doing laundry, catching up on mail and bills and am currently making a meatloaf that should last me several days.  I got a canteloupe that is called a "candyloupe" at the store and it is indeed sweet.  Plan to take some to Cowboy tomorrow when I go see him.

He doesn't seem to know what day it is, how long since I last visited, what he had for breakfast, etc.  I am seriously thinking about cutting visits to twice a week.  He seems quite content and well cared for and the gas and the time are a challenge sometimes.  Playing by ear for now.

I spent some time yesterday attacking what I pay for various things and have found some way to cut.  I cut back on the channels I get from Direct TV.  I don't watch much TV and most of I do watch is in the basic package.  I disconnected Cowboy's telephone.  He won't answer it most of the time because he gets so many solicitation calls, and I learned I can call the desk and they will retrieve him if I really feel like I need to talk to him.  $100 a month saved with those two things.

Gas keeps going up.  Will be interesting what kind of high it hits this year.

Wednesday, June 12

Had a follow up appointment on Monday on my hearing aids.  Went well.  I am doing good with them.

I then went to a social committee meeting for the neighborhood.  We are planning our July 4 picnic.  I always furnish these big folding tables and I agreed to chop the onions this year.  Should n't be too big a chore.

I went to see Cowboy yesterday.  He was sound asleep when I got there.  I went rather early and they had just had breakfast.  I am told he normally takes a little nap after every meal but he got up when I arrived and we went out to see the flowers.  We pulled a few weeds and walked around the outside area a couple of times.  It was a beautiful morning, although a bit warm.  He did really well but was tired after two times around.

We went back to his room and the aide came around and shaved him.  It was time for me to leave.  Had a committee meeting back at home at 1PM.

I am still participating on the Emergency Committee but in a reduced role.  Like to keep up with the plans and decisions that are made and be prepared for the drills etc.  They are doing a great job.  It feels good to have been involved in putting it all together and writing the initial plan but there are lots of capable people involved so I am choosing to not get too involved.

I enjoyed a nice long walk this morning and then a good breakfast and time with the paper. I watered the flowers on the patio.  The summer is heating up big time.  We now have above normal temperatures going on here the middle of June.  Everything is surviving so far.  The geraniums look really nice and I have new buds on the marigolds.

At 2 I went to play with the dulcimer group at a nursing home.  That took from 2 to about 4.  Then I went down the local music store and got a foot pedal to go with a small keyboard that I bought for those who choose to accompany me on occasion.  It will be good not to depend on anyone else to come up with equipment.  Haven't had time to do much with it but it has a lot of capabilities that I can tinker with.

It is nine and I am tired so off to bed.  Will going over to see Cowboy again in the morning.

Sunday, June 9

I spent a good deal of Thursday going to Austin to Camp Mabry to get a new ID card.  Ft Hood is a little closer but you have to make an appointment, stand in line, let active duty ahead of you, etc.  so Camp Mabry turned out to be a good thing.  No line.

Went to the PX while I was there.  Small but surprisingly diverse.  Picked up a few little items.

Friday I had planned to go to a Home and Garden show but found I was just too lazy to do it.  Is this about getting older or just plain laziness, not sure.  In the PM I took some items to have them hemmed and went and got a haircut.  I have taken to watching Jeopardy at 4 so had to come home and do that.  The questions are challenging so it is a good brain workout.  I do really well in some categories and really lousy in others.

Saturday AM I went to dulcimer practice and then headed over to see Cowboy.  He was watching TV.  We   went out and checked out the flowers.  He always can spot a weed or flower that needs debudding and I really think the exercise is well worth it.  We walked around in the outdoor area for a while and then went in.  He did pretty well.

I enjoyed staying in today and doing a little laundry and reading the paper.  Also took a nice long walk this morning.  It had been raining but quit about 10:30 or so.  Nice day.

I seem to be having really vivid dreams of late.  They are like whole movies and go on and on.  Not sure what that is telling me.  They don't make a lot of sense and I try to interpret them but not good at it.  Last night I went to my neighbors (very nice fellow, across the street) and cleaned his carpets on my hands and knees.  Am I feeling appreciative of all the little things he does for me?  Then he came to my house, only the front yard was submerged in several feet of water.  He and Cowboy were in bathing suits, drinking large quantities of beer with their feet dangling in the water.   I went in the house and was glad to see a rug at the front door.  For some reason the house was not flooded.    weird......

Wednesday, June 5

Monday was a busy day.  I took the paperwork back to the car dealer.  It is about 20 miles each way.

I came back and tidied up and set up for band practice.  We practiced longer on Monday preparing for our gig at the VA home.

Monday night was Bunco.  I had loaned them my tables and chairs so after we had to get them home and put away.

Tuesday I got up and welcomed the carpet folks in at 8AM to clean the rugs and carpet.  Then I headed over to see Cowboy.

I took the back roads yesterday and could smell the freshly baled hay, see they are cutting the winter wheat and boy, is the corn ever getting tall !  There is a little town along the route that has a "Corn Festival" and there are banners, etc. everywhere.  It is really nice to see the horses, cows and goats in the fields grazing and the very golden wheat fields and very green corn fields.  Sure beats 18 wheelers !

Cowboy was in his room watching TV.  He is definitely not turning into a big socializer but he does spend time out in the day room and is getting to know people better.

We had lunch, not one of my favorites, black-eyed peas, cornbread, greens.  Down south cooking for sure.

Cowboy is still in therapy and I believe he is getting around a little better.   When he starts shuffling I say "Big Steps!" and he will start taking better steps and get steadier.  He just won't do it very long so sometimes I say it 3 or 4 times between his room and the dining table.

After lunch I had him take his teeth out and I cleaned them and put them to soak.  He was rather sleepy so I left so he would take a nap.

Today I am going down to change the title on the Maserati, get a mani pedi and hopefully get home by noon.  The housekeepers come at 1.

Sunday, June 2

I spent 2 hours on Friday morning getting my hearing tested and getting fitted for hearing aids.  I had put this off for a couple of years but when you start asking everyone to repeat what they said or find yourself nodding even when you are not sure what they are talking about it is time.

There is a new place here that just opened and they are running a special.  It is called "Zounds" and so far I am very impressed.  I have had hearing tests before, even tried wearing one about 4 years ago on a trial basis and feel they did a good job on the testing and their hearing instruments are a bit "outside the box".  Rather than batteries you charge them in a charger every night and they come apart and can be replaced piecemeal rather than buying the whole thing again.  There is a remote control for adjusting volume, environment, etc.  30 day money back guarantee so I am trying them.  The best part is I paid $2000 instead of $6000 to buy them.  If they work that is quite a big difference.  Time will tell.

Wore them all day Friday withoutany  problem.  Friday night a neighbor and I went to a symphony concert in Austin that featured Vadim  Glugman playing a strad.  It was wonderful and the hearing aids worked great.  So far, so good.

Got up yesterday and forgot I had them and didn't put them in and went off to dulcimer practice without them.

In the afternoon I went to see Cowboy and checked him out  and took him to Applebees for ribs. We put him in a wheelchair so it wouldn't take forever to get from his room to the front door.  It is a ways.  He didn't much like it but he does listen to me sometimes.

He had a little trouble cutting the ribs apart and I helped him a little bit and he ended up with sticky fingers, etc.  but he thoroughly enjoyed them and ate everything on his plate.  Good thing.  The nurse told me before we left that his blood sugar was 73.  That is tooooo low.

He had not seen the new car I bought about two months ago and he comments on it.   "Did you buy a new car" he asked.  I explained we had talked about it and he was OK with it.  That was probably 4 months ago.   I asked him if he liked it and he said "yeah".  He is not really terribly interested.  I wonder what he will think when I get that Maserati fixed up and take him for a ride?

When we got back I had him remove his dentures and I put them to soak and watched him and prompted him while he brushed his teeth.  I went out to tell his aide and she said, "well, he tells me he can't get them out and he doesn't need them out.  I told the nurse and she just shrugged."  This teeth business is an ongoing headache.  Not sure the solution but I told that aide I just say  "Take your teeth out" and he just does so and hands them over.  mmmmm........

Speaking of the Maserati, it is still at the mechanics.  They haven't been able to find some of the belts, seals, etc that they need.  Rubber rots over time and so this is a problem.  I am not in a hurry and expect to find a solution at some point.

Got a call from the dealership about my tags.  Since we have Disabled Veteran plates they need a signature from Cowboy giving me permission to put them on the new car since it is in my name.  I forgot to take the darn paper with me when I went over yesterday so am just going to sign them myself.  It won't be the first time.

Today I am doing laundry and enjoying my Sunday paper.  I didn't get up til 9.  Feels like the day is half over already.  I made a dash to the drugstore.  Had a 20% off coupon and bought Cowboy some shower gel, denture cleaner and wet wipes as well as some birthday cards, toothpaste and glucosomine for me.  Saved $38 so guess it was worth taking the time on my "day in".
