Monday, April 28

I listened carefully to the weather report Saturday and heard that a storm front was coming through Saturday night but would be gone by 6 AM Sunday.  I got up Sunday and left about 8 AM to go see Cowboy.  Turns out the storm front was coming through around 9 and I had to drive through some really heavy rain and wind.  When I heard about all the tornadoes I was grateful that I only encountered rain.

Cowboy was cranky yesterday.  There were a couple of residents behaving badly and everyone was kind of on edge.  At one point he shouted at one of the residents who kept pestering him.  He seemed tired as well.  The nurse told me that a few days prior someone had bothered him and he had
"bonked" him on the head.  They are supposed to notify me of such things but that was the first I heard of it.  Apparently it was just a little "bonk" and was more funny than a problem.   mmmmmm....

Cowboy asked me to buy him an electric razor.  He seems to want to shave himself rather having them do it for him.  Not sure can do that.  Will need to talk to the social worker.

Today I went to Home Depot and bought paint for my bedroom and bathroom.  Have decided to start there.  Also bought a really cool, very lightweight ladder.  I won't be able to do all of this myself but I can start.

In a few minutes my daughter, who is home for a couple of days, and I are going to AT&T to put me on her cell phone plan.  Will be quite a bit less than what I have now.

Friday; April 25

The last three days have been a mixed bag.

On Wednesday the plumber came and replaced the toilet.  He was very nice and very efficient.  He also fixed the leaking outside faucet and removed the "scald guard" from my bathtub which was preventing my having hot enough water.

The glass man came and told me that the glass in my china is no longer made.  It is a very thin leaded glass kind of like that used in stained glass windows.  He couldn't fix it.  Amazing how much trouble a little pane of glass about 5 by 10 can be.   The saga continues.

I went to see Cowboy on Thursday.  It was a cloudy day with occasional sprinkles and there were a number of folks on the road today that needed to take a drivers education course.  It was hard to understand why someone would drive 10 or 15 miles below the speed limit and stay in the passing lane.  It just makes everyone behave badly.

Cowboy was in good spirits for most of the visit.  At one point, we were sitting outside enjoying the sunshine and he got nostalgic and had tears in his eyes.  It was hard.  I do pretty well as long as I know he is doing well and it hurts when he seems less than happy.

This morning I mailed a $75 fine to the city for a red light I have no knowledge of running.  It is crazy traffic around here so I suppose it it possible.  Then I went to Kohls because I got a letter saying that my email address wasn't any good.  I had tried to change it and got caught up in their rather silly security set up.  Customer service then put me on the telephone with someplace only to be told that they couldn't fix it.  It would have to go home, get on line and call them.  By the time I got home my cell phone was nearly dead so guess I will have to deal with it next week.

Next stop the furniture store to delay delivery until floor is in.  No problem.

I next went and made the acquaintance of the local Toyota dealer.  I had just missed getting my last free service appointment.  Got lost in the move I guess.  He first told me it would be $95 to get the oil changed, tires rotated, etc.  When they finished he told me he had talked to the service manager and it was free.  One nice thing that happened today.

I then went to McAllisters for a bit of lunch.  Very busy and crowded.  Somehow my order got lost and I waited and waited and waited and then complained, not once but twice and finally got my sandwich.  I didn't need to be anywhere but still........

I then went to Michaels and picked out some greenery and flowers for my daughter for her bathroom.  There was a sign that siad 60% off.  When I went to check out found out it only applied to a handful of selections.

Got a lot done but not without frustration.  Think I will spend tomorrow trying to reduce the number of weeds in the yard and trying out the new hose I bought.  Might get in the pool and try it out.,

Tuesday, April 22Ne

Glad had a good weekend because yesterday wasn't.  I spent a good part of the day getting things organized in the garage. I tried to move a shelf and it got stuck and was only rescued by the very nice plumber guy.

Want to be able to put the car in and also will soon need to get the jet skiis in there as well.  There were thunderstorms, hail and wind expected last night so wanted to get the car inside.  All I need now is hail damage to the car !  The garage is beginning to look pretty organized after several hours of work.

The plumber came out and I learned that there is a foreign object in the stool that cannot be removed by normal means.  We can have them take the toilet out and try to dislodge it but the plumber tells me that is hardly ever successful.  I went to Home Depot (again) and bought a toilet and they are coming back tomorrow to put it in.  It is not covered under the warranty because it is not the result of normal "wear and tear".  I guess I need to read the fine print more carefully.  I am convinced the former owner had to know of the problem.  You can flush the toilet multiple times until the debris builds up around the obstruction and then it overflows.  I can see why it wasn't caught by the inspector.  He just flushed it and it worked.

So tomorrow we have another plumber visit.  Also, I heard from the glass people about the broken pane in the china cabinet.  They will be here tomorrow as well.  Need to get some of this stuff put to bed.  Plan to go see Cowboy again on Thursday.

Today I went and got a much needed pedicure and haircut.  I found this really neat place for the pedicure.  They serve you a drink in a pretty glass, there is beautiful music playing and TV screens with scenic things to look at.  There are some of these "big city" thinks I could get used to. Only $5 more than I am used to.   It was a nice break.  I was almost embarrassed about how bad my toenails looked.

One of the things I like about being here is the vast number of stores and eating places.  I love TACO BUENO and not seen one since I lived in Oklahoma.  I went and had a Taco salad and loved every bite.

My daughter really likes the new house and has big plans to fix up the game room and the music room upstairs.  I haven't gotten there yet.  Too many practical concerns to deal with.  I am starting to think about paint colors.  This place is so different from my last two domiciles that have to give this some thought.

Sunday, April 20

It has been a nice day.  I left at 8 to go see Cowboy.  It was a beautiful day.  Thank you Ladybird !!   There were wildflowers blooming everywhere.  Pink, white, orange and of course, bluebonnets.  We had a weird winter and unusual spring but the wildflowers seemed to like it.  It was one of the prettiest springs I can remember here.

Cowboy was in good spirits.  We walked around outside for quite a while.  There is a new activities aide and she had put these giant eggs as well as flower spinners in all of the flower boxes so it was very colorful and there was just enough breeze to make everything move.

We had ribs for lunch with rice, green beans and apple pie and ice cream for dessert.  They really roll it out for a holiday.  It was very good.

Cowboy's TV was all messed up.  He has probably been just punching buttons at random.  I worked on it awhile and made some progress but it still isn't right.  Maybe I can get some help.

I took Cowboy a package of undershorts.  He had told me he was low.  I don't know what happens to things but could be that the name had gotten too hard to read.  Also, he just won't wear an adult diaper and so probably a lot of them become unusable.  Anyway, he has 8 new pair.  I spent some time tidying up his drawers.  He was pleased.

There a couple of new residents and I met their families today.  There a couple of the fellows that are missing and I have not had a chance to inquire about them  Cowboy said this one fellow went home.  I rather doubt it but will see if I can find out.

One of the long time residents came up to us today and said "You are such a beautiful couple."  Cowboy  just beamed.

I made good progress on the house yesterday.  Grandson number 1 put up cabinets in the laundry room, pegboards in the master closet and helped me store the Christmas items in the attic.  I was not wanting to use the attic but then he reminded me that I am now in a place where I have help from my children and grandchildren.  Sweet comment, I thought.  I can't get up there for sure.

Thursday, April 17

So much to do, so much to think about.  I must have been out of mind to take this on.  Hopefully I will look back later and laugh  about it all.  Spent a good deal of time this week getting the countertops and the floor laid out.  Went into Home Depot today to finalize the order and the bill.  They are telling me it will be about 5 weeks total to get everything completed.  I am both excited and frustrated.  Wish we could get done quicker.

I called the plumber today.  The stool upstairs is not working properly and despite calling attention to it prior to close there is an outside faucet that is spewing water.    Guessnee  to think of it all as part of the adventure.  They will be here Monday.

Grandson number 4 is here tonight moving boxes.  Have been told need to get as much room as possible available for the install that is coming up.  There are 9 pallets of product to bring in.  We are going to use the two bedrooms upstairs that are not affected to store boxes of everything that can't be put away until after we get the new floor and counters in place.

Tomorrow Grandson number 1 will be here as well as grandson number 4 returning.  Hopefully we will make good progress tomorrow on moving things around.

I called a lawn guy today and had the grass cut and the weeds cut down.  He will be back in two weeks.  Could hardly speak english but did a good job.

Sunday I will be going to see Cowboy again.  More later.

Monday, April 14 mostl

This past week has been extremely busy and exhausting.  I am pleased to report I am in my new house and everything is under control (sort of).

There were some wrinkles that proved pretty frustrating but has there ever been a move where that was not true?  First of all, the moving company miscalculated the size of the load and the amount of time to break down and load the furniture.  This has happened before.  They ended up going to get another van to get everything loaded so we were into the evening this past Monday getting done.

I went to see Cowboy the next morning and arrived in Arlington about noon to find they had arrived about 15 minutes before me.  Good timing.

Cowboy was fine but seems to have some trouble comprehending what is going on.

It took the movers into the evening hours to complete the unload and they wracked up 5 more hours overall than estimated.  Not a happy situation but they did work diligently to get it all done.  They were unable to get the sleeper sofa into the upstairs bedroom that we wanted and broke a pane in the china cabinet.  Other than that no mishaps with the furniture.

I learned from the pool people that the secondary pump and the sweeper were gone for the pool.  That cost $1000.  I checked my home owners policy and it is pretty non specific on the details on the pool AND the inspector did not pick up on it.  Plus, you have to report and get an agreement to get it resolved with the insurance company before you do the repair.  I didn't do that.  I suspect it would have taken about a year to fight through and in the meantime I would have to clean everything manually.  I am not up to that.

My daughter got home on Saturday and we got some things done and then on Sunday I had three grandsons hoisting boxes, fixing little things, etc. That was very helpful.  There were a bunch of  empty boxes and we carried them to the curb for the garbage folks to recycle.  At the suggestion of grandson number 1 I put an ad on Craigslist as free boxes.  Within an hour they were all gone!!

Also, grandsons number 2 and 4 were able to get the sofa in the bedroom.  Problem solved.

I have spent every day getting up and starting in on unpacking and organizing til I give out and then I quit.  This is going to take awhile.  I have been to Home Depot about 5 times as well as WalMart a couple of times.

Today grandson number 4 came over and carried a lot of boxes upstairs.  Sometime this week grandson number 1 will be back to put up some cabinets and pegboards.  We are getting there.  I am so grateful to all of them.

Tomorrow I am going to see Cowboy.  They are going to have a little Easter party and I made baked beans today to take for the luncheon.  I have talked to him a couple of times and he is fine but misses me.  I am feeling a little guilty about not being over to see him much lately.  Plan to go tomorrow and then again on Easter to see him.  Hoping to get our schedule back to normal.

I am really tired but every day is a bit better.  I mostly am sleeping pretty well.  The weather has been kind of crazy and very windy.  This house makes very strange noises in the wind.  Need to look into that at some point.  My daughter says it sounds like it is "haunted".  I suspect it is wind and some loose branches or something in the attic.  We will figure it out.

Saturday, April 5

It didn't turn out to be "early to rise".  I didn't get up til almost 9.  I think my body is really starting to rebel. My back hurts, well actually everything hurts, but I just have to keep at it.

I did all the laundry today.  Had to, couldn't get out of my pajamas til had some clean clothes.  I have enough now to last through the middle of the week so will be fine.  And that includes some long pants.  It has turned colder.

I did the self cleaning oven thing today and it heats the house up big time but had to be done.  It has been awhile.  Sure beats the old days when you bought oven off, took in the awful fumes, scrubbed and scrubbed.  Packed nearly everything but still have quite a few odds and ends.  I feel confident now that I will be ready on Monday morning.  The big thing remaining is unhooking the TV receivers and packing that up to return.  Getting down on all fours is not easy anymore.

In the AM I will wash the sheets and towels and get them packed.  It is a challenge to walk around in the house.  There are stacks of boxes everywhere.  Every now and then I think about what it would be like for the kids if I died unexpectedly.  There is soooooo much stuff and they are scattered about.  Just have to be sure that doesn't happen I guess.

I have given away just about everything in the refrigerator and now must clean it out.  Am just taking a break for a few minutes.

A friend and neighbor brought by some lap robes that she made for the VA home.   Folks around here are so lovely.  There are several fellows in wheel chairs and these things are nice for them.

If I weren't so focused on getting things ready I might have time to get excited.  A new house, new neighbors to meet, new experiences and a lot more time with the kids and grandkids.

Practically everyone asks me if I will get involved with music there.  I always have everywhere I have been so I would say yes.  Just don't know what yet.  It will be months getting the house all painted, decorated etc so that is job one.  UT Arlington is nearby and I am guessing they will have some events to go to for entertainment.  I used to go to the movies quite a bit but Cowboy was never big on movies so haven't done that much in recent years.  I might actually be able to keep up with the best of those (although it sure has gotten expensive !).

Probably won't post again for several days, but I will be back..........

Friday, April 4

Today was Cowboy's 84th birthday.  I remember when I met him and he was 46 but always said on his birthday that he was "19".  He had such a great attitude about getting older.

I went to the store first thing this morning and got 36 cupcakes.  That  should be enough for the 32 residents and the staff, especially since some of the residents can't eat solid food.  There are three new residents and I met the wife of one today.  She was very nice but seems a bit strung out from the big change that has just occurred in her life.  Her hubby's name is Dan.  He seems very nice as well.  Unlike most of the residents he has a very generous full head of hair and is rather attractive.

The aides told me they sang Happy Birthday to Cowboy this morning and he never cracked a smile.  That sounds about right.  He got a nice card from his oldest daughter and some comics.  For some reason he likes to look at the comics (although I don't think he can read and understand the narrative).  It was a nice gesture.

My youngest daughter called today as well.  I took him a card but am pretty sure he couldn't understand a word that was on it.   Overall I think it was a nice birthday.  He doesn't really get very excited about any of it.

I am so tired.  It was good to take a day off and not work at the house.  Yesterday some neighbors came by and helped.  One couple in particular spent all afternoon at the house and helped a great deal.  I had not expected the wardrobe boxes to be so hard to put together and move around and and was so grateful that I had help. They stayed all afternoon and then invited me to dinner.  So nice, just what I needed.

I made a little bit of progress today and think maybe I can finish up with everything tomorrow and then can get a little rest on Sunday before I start the actual move and unpacking, etc. on the other end.

I also heard from my oldest grandson today.  He told me he had been super busy but would come out and help me hook everything up and make sure the computer, TV's and such all work and that I don't have any technical issues to deal with.  I also heard from my daughter, who is in California.  At some point, she will have to put all of her things in order.  I think this whole process may take a while.

I passed along my music from dulcimer to a neighbor today who will make sure it is given to the head of the dulcimer group.  I hope all goes well with them.  I feel a little guilty leaving them.

Early to bed, early to rise and hopefully will get everything completely organized tomorrow.

Wednesday, April 2

April 1, April fools day, came and went with nary a notice.  I continue to pack and obsess about having it all done.

Today I loaded up the SUV and took a load to the local food pantry/charity and then came home and loaded up again and took a load to the neighborhood gathering place for stuff for the the big garage sale on Saturday.  I made hardly a dent.

I continue to marvel at how one person needs to have so much stuff.  I am one of those that gets a bit attached to certain things and have a hard time letting go.  I had lunch with a friend today and was telling her about a cheese board purchased in Germany in 1978 and moved several times and I still can't let it go.  It is about memories as opposed to any monetary value.   and the sad thing is that a lot of what I have is not of any interest to my children.  Who uses expensive china these days with a bread plate, soup bowl, dessert plate and three kings of crystal glasses.  I really need to give this some thought.

I donated the long fold up tables that I have (3) to the neighborhood.  I bought them for the 25th anniversary celebration of Cowboy and I and used them one other time for a Red Hat garden party and they have been used a number of times by the neighborhood for picnics and such since we moved to Texas. that was in 2002.   The neighborhood needs them far worse than I do.  Also let go of 8 folding chairs and various other things.

This afternoon I went to see the lady who has been caring for our little dog.  She is going to be her permanent owner now.  She was a victim of Sandy and had lost her dog and her hubby in recent years and she and our pooch just bonded like they were meant to be a pair.  It is a gift to me, a gift to her and a gift to the dog.

Tomorrow will be spent trying to make progress on the packing and getting some address changes finished up.  I called today and arranged to meet with a pool service and a lawn service next Wed.  Have to be there for the refrigerator to be delivered anyway.

I will spend Friday visiting with Cowboy and celebrating his birthday and hopefully can finish up over the weekend.  The movers will be here first thing Monday AM.

I have confirmed the cleaning folks will be here Monday afternoon and the floor cleaning will be done on Tuesday.  Hopefully I have covered all the bases.

I plan to continue the blog but it may be a bit "spotty" for a little while, given all that is going on.

Cowboy is fine and I am fine and everything is going OK.  We can all be grateful for that.
