Monday, September 30

A shutdown of the government looms.  Be interesting to see what happens.  I am basically totally sick of the whole mess.  Try to not to dwell on it.

On Friday I worked our community flu clinic.  We served 400 plus people.  I just handed out forms, explained process, answered questions, etc.  Went well and is considered a success.

Friday night I went to the symphony in Austin with a neighbor.  We ate at an Italian restaurant prior and it was wonderful.  I ate too much !!  The concert was also wonderful  Nice evening but was up til after midnight by the time I got home, wound down, etc.

Dulcimer practice took up Saturday morning and then I managed to goof off most of the day.  A friend called about 5 and we went out and had a drink and dinner.  (I have such a tough life).  One of our band members was playing a gig with some guys and we cheered him on.

I went to see Cowboy on Sunday.  There is a fellow there who constantly picks up dead leaves, weeds and trash and for the longest he put it in a plastic bag.  Seems he has started putting it in the flower beds.  I took Cowboy outside.  It was a beautiful day and he immediately wanted to clean the trash out of the newly planted flower bed.  I found a trash bag and we cleaned it up.

In a little bit the fellow comes out and realizes what we have done and he is just glowering at us.  I was wondering if we were going to have a confrontation.  He sits outside and plays his indian flute a lot and that is what he started doing.  After awhile he starts picking up leaves again and deposits them in the flower bed.  He then goes inside which was a good thing because now Cowboy is intent on going out and cleaning up the bed again.  We may have a mini-war on our hands.

I brought the activities aide back home with me and we spent some time going through a pile of books that I wanted to see if be appropriate for these guys to look at.  He was looking for specific subjects, like cats, or dogs or horses.  We found some big coffee table books that he liked.  Also took a couple of motorcycles and one on guns as well as some on western history.   I told him I understood it best not to bring thoughts about that sort of thing into their thinking.   He is going to talk to the head lady and get an opinion.   Glad he was willing to look at things.  It took him two and half loads of a laundry basket to get it all to the car.  and he is young and strong.

While he was here he wanted to look at the Maserati and he seems a little bit interested.  We couldn't get the hood up.  The latch was stuck.  That wasn't good.  Another possible buyer but everything is just "nibbles" so far.

I got up this morning and spent time in the yard tidying up and dead heading some things.  It is another beautiful day.  Trying really hard to slow it down a bit and try to relax.

Got a call from the Dr. on Friday.  The biopsy was back and everything is fine.  They can't tell me what caused the rash but very well may be stress. Am using a Dr. recommended med and we will see if it starts going away.  Go back to the Dr. on the 10th.   I am going to have to reexamine how I am spending my time and try to simplify things.

Thursday, September 26

I took the flowers over this past Sunday and set them in the beds.  Went back on Tuesday and spent almost all day with some help from the activities aide, Cowboy, one of the wives and had lots of bystanders.  Filled one raised bed with yellow mums, one with burgundy mums and one with a variety of greens like coleus, ivy, etc.   A few of the marigolds are still with us and we pulled out everything that was about gone.  It looks absolutely wonderful and everyone is very pleased with our project.

Next project I am going through a bunch of books that have lots of pictures for their bookcase.  When I started going through them I found I have books I have not even opened in 30 years.  I love books but it is time to weed it out.

Wednesday I washed my car, filled it up, got a pedicure, went to the grocery store and then came home and didn't do anything the rest of the day.

Back to the home today.  It was an absolutely beautiful day with a light breeze and by 10AM practically everyone of the residents thatcan  get around by any means were sitting on the patio.  They brought juice and vanilla wafers for them   Lovely relaxed morning.  Cowboy walked around the area about 5 times.  He is doing much better handling the walker and not shuffling his feet.

When I got there this morning he was in his room and I asked him what he was doing.  He said they were almost finished with the painting.  I asked "What painting?".  He said, "My helmet".  Had to be referring to a motorcyle helmet.

When we went outside he kept pointing to this same mum and telling me it had already grown a lot bigger.  That isn't the case but he was so pleased we just agree and go on.

I will helping with the flu clinic in the morning, herding the folks through the lines from 8 to 11.  Tomorrow night a friend and I are going to the symphony in Austin.

Saturday, September 21

They tell me it will be fall tomorrow.  Doesn't feel like it.  Still pretty hot.  I am tired of hot weather and ready for orange and golden leaves and a cool breeze.  Oh wait, this is central Texas.  Isn't going to happen.

Wednesday I got a haircut, filled up the car (hate that), and went to the dermatologist.  Can't recall if I mentioned it, though I think I did, I have a rash on my arms and legs.  Been there for months.  Won't go away.  I have tried EVERYTHING !!

I got my first full body skin exam.  Seems there are all sorts of interesting things on my skin.  I have several places that have little cysts that have "calcified", a discolored place on my leg called "granulor annulare" or something like that. And of course, pimples.  No one 69 years old should have to deal with pimples ! However, she doesn't know what the rash is so is doing a biopsy.  Also removed a mole that is getting bigger.  Interesting visit.  Will know results of biopsy in two weeks.

I hosted Book Club at my house on Thursday.  I had selected "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings".  I thought they would like it but hardly anyone did.  Well, I did.  Had a good discussion and I always enjoy the ladies and visiting.

Thursday afternoon one of the fellows from the dulcimer group came over and helped me load 15 folding chairs into my car for tomorrow's dulcimer concerts at the home.  Everyone is so nice and helpful around here.  It is great.

I ordered five large pizzas to feed us because turns out the kitchen at the home is short stafffed and can't feed us.  Didn't find that out til Thursday AM.

A neighbor from across the street came over and said one of the painters doing his house is interested in the Maserati.  He is going to come look at it next week.  cool.  Have had an ad on Craigslist and have had some inquiries but no serious bites.

I then watched the evening news and learned that we might have 5 inches of rain on Friday and flooding, etc. Got a call from our leader and we agreed it was best to cancel.  Got a call from my friendly helper and he came back and emptied my car.  Called the pizza place and cancelled the pizzas.  Geez.  What a day.

One of the nice things about a rainy day and all your plans are cancelled.  You can do whatever you want (as long as you don't have to go outside).  It just poured all day and sometimes the TV was out because of the rain.  I ended up working on my rather out of control closet.  Pulled out stuff I don't need or want or can't wear and filled 4 shopping bags (big shopping bags) with all of it.  It will go to a local charity.

We had dulcimer practice this morning and I went.  Then I went and bought mums to plant at the home.  They are all in my car.  Will take them over tomorrow.  I think the aide is supposed to be there part of the day so he can help me unload.  Maybe we can get them in the ground when I go back Tuesday.

Tuesday, September 17

I have really been "chasing my tail" for several days now.

On Saturday we had dulcimer practice and I tried to get laundry done in the PM.  On Sunday we played at the library from 2 to 4.  I had gone at 1 because I wanted to be sure they had things set up (they did) and to look at the sculpture exhibit that was going on.  I needed some browsing and contemplating time and it did the trick.  The concert went well.

I dashed home, loaded up my cart that I use for music gigs with the punch ingredients, changed clothes, took my medicine (eye drops) and then found I could not load the cart.  It was too heavy.  Finally rounded up my friendly neighbor across the street and got it loaded and got to the park in time to make the punch and then man the name tag table for the party.  It was a fun time.  The food was wonderful, I ate too much and was completely beat when I got home.

Monday I did some shopping for such interesting things as shampoo, etc., went and used a 25% off coupon at Beall's to buy a couple of things and then went to band practice.

Today I went to the home and helped the program aide set up bowling for the patients and then helped him corral the fellows and play.  It consisted of a mat with arrows, a metal framed doo dad to place the ball and then everyone got to "bowl".  I use the term loosely.  The ball was rubber, the pins were plastic and if you managed to keep the metal frame in place everyone got a great score.  The guys just loved it.  Even Cowboy got into it and then was telling others how to do it.  He just has to be the one who teaches, instructs and orders around, even now.

Went to support group at 5PM.    Each of us was asked to describe how we managed right after our spouse was put in the home and how we felt.  It was interesting how many of the women were just flat scared to death to be alone.  We heard tales of children getting them guns, how to use bug spray instead, how to ignore funny sounds in the middle of the night.  I am sitting there thinking that I was never scared, I gave the kids his guns a  long time ago and that I am sleeping better than I did when he was at home because I am not half awake listening for  him to do something.

The facilitator talked about how we should take time to meditate, take it easy and enjoy not having the burden of caring for our loved one.  I was thinking about how I dived right in to about a dozen projects immediately and found it very therapeutic.

On the way home I was thinking that I may be a bit atypical.  I am grateful that I am not dealing with some of the things some of these ladies are.

Friday, September 13

Anybody notice today was Friday the 13th.  I am not a superstitious person but boy was today a doozy.

I went to see Cowboy this morning.  There is a fellow named Archie who came over to him and tried to take his walker away.  Cowboy just went ballistic.  He yelled and jerked it away and caused quite a commotion.  It took two staff folks to solve the issue and get Archie to go elsewhere and sit down for lunch.

Cowboy was really cranky and even was cranky with me which doesn't happen often.  Doesn't make for a good day.  We had catfish for lunch which is about his favorite meal in the world and that helped a lot.

I had plans to host my two sisters at my house in October and was so looking forward to it.  We haven't been together for six years, although I have seen them separately. Originally there were six girls but we are down to three.  It is time to make a connection.   Found out today that my older sister has roof problems.  This has been going on for a while but bottom line she has a 55 gallon barrel in her living room catching water from the unusually heavy rain they have been having and won't be able to leave for a while til she gets it all resolved.  I am very disappointed but understand her situation.  Hopefully we can get together later in the fall.

My eyes are doing great and I can see very well, even without reading glasses.  It takes about a month before they decide exactly where you stand but right now I am feeling really optimistic.

Have a dulcimer practice tomorrow and a concert at the library on Sunday followed by a neighborhood Luau Sunday night so am going to be busy for a couple of days.  Have to make the punch.  It involved buying 6 cans of orange juice, 6 cans of pineapple juice, 6 cans of lime juice, a bunch of ginger ale and orange soda.  Seems like should make enough for an army and I am just trying to make enough for 90 people.  Hope we haven't overestimated tooooooo much.

Feeling pretty good but a bit tired.  Have to finish my book for this month's book club by next Thursday.  We are reading "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou.  Very good book but I have a ways to go.  and this month is at my house, so am going to have to tidy up before Thursday.  Think I will turn in and read for a spell

I wrote this without glasses.  I am going to really like the freedom of not depending on "specs" all the time, although I will still need sunglasses and sometimes reading glasses.  Can't wear anything on my face for seven days and I am one of those folks that just looks washed out without a bit of makeup but we will get through it.

How did I ever find time to work for a living?

Wednesday, September 11

Surgery went well.  My left eye is feeling very itchy and achy, maybe more than the other one but am following directions and putting drops in, etc.  It was late today, after 4 when we got home, so no nap.  Think it is early to bed for me.  Too soon to know how much improvement in the vision in my left eye but have high hopes.  Back in the morning for a follow up and I am done ! yea !  On to the next thing.

There was a luncheon on Friday that got cancelled so will probably go see Cowboy again on Friday.

Things are a little behind around here.  Need to tidy up, but I guess it will keep.

Tuesday, September 10

Spent Sunday with Cowboy. Nice day so got out and walked.  He went around the walkway 4 times.  Usually has only done one or two.  There were a lot of visitors there and we had a nice visit on the veranda with  some other families.

Yesterday I was a bit busy.  Had a social committee meeting in the AM.  the neighborhood is having a Luau this coming Sunday evening and there is a committee of about 8 people that are going to do all the cooking, setting up, entertaining, etc.  Big job.  We have 90 people coming.  I will be making the punch.  I have to play at the library Sunday afternoon so that is about all I will have time for.  Will man the name tag table at the party.

Our band played at the downtown Methodist Church in the afternoon.  They have a day care program for dementia folks called "PALS".  Good time was had by all.  We played a lot of western songs and the fellows really liked that.

Bunco in the evening.  I was to pick up three ladies and it was raining.  I got to the site of Bunco and realized I had not picked up the third one!  Sometimes I worry about my own brain.

This morning I went to see Cowboy for a couple of hours but had to come back for a 1PM Emergency Management Committee meeting.  Headed there momentarily.  He had therapy at 11 so it worked out just right.

A lovely neighbor is picking me up tomorrow for my surgery.  Hope it goes as well as the first one.

Friday, September 6

It's been a busy week.  I went to the orthopedist on Tuesday and got an injection to relieve the pain in my hand and arm.   I was a bit numb after so stayed home the rest of the day and rested.  They said to allow two weeks for full effect.  I felt better on Wednesday and a bit better since but still have some discomfort.

I went to see Cowboy on Wednesday and had lunch with him.  He has really benefited from the physical therapy.  They are trying to get him to use the walker correctly so he won't take so many falls.  So far, so good.

My daughter arrived Wed evening and we went to the city on Thursday for my laser cataract surgery.  They were running late.  Was supposed to get in at 8:15 and it was almost 9.  A bit nerve wracking.  About 11 we were done and headed home.  My daughter and I stopped at IHOP and had breakfast.  Had not been there since Cowboy went to the home.  Enjoyed a good breakfast and then home and long nap.  My eye was a bit painful and the drops stung a bit but by late Wednesday was doing pretty well so we went out to eat.  I had not had a good restaurant meal in a while and it was great.  Had cocktails, an appetizer and fried shrimp and baked potato.  When we got home I went to bed and slept all night with nary a problem.

When I got up this morning I could see really well and only needed my reading glasses for the morning paper.  I had a  couple of cups of tea and my daughter cooked me a nice breakfast.  At 10:30 we left to go for my follow up.  The doc told me I could drive and anything else I wanted to do but not to lift anything heavy and keep up the drops.  All is good.  Go back next week on Wednesday for the other eye.  I am writing this entry without glasses !!  Everything is brighter and clearer and I don't think I had realized how much my vision had been compromised.

After that we drove to see Cowboy and my daughter had a chance to visit with him.  He was in a good humor and very "present".  We had a nice, although short, visit.  Will be going back on Sunday to spend some time with him.

I had made arrangements to meet someone about the car at 4 so came back and barely made it in time. Turned out to be an older fellow who was looking for something to tinker with.  I got the distinct impression his wife was not big on him spending money on something like this.  No sale.  No biggy.  Someone will come along.

Monday, September 2

I got up yesterday AM and went to see Cowboy.  He was doing well.  He knew who I was and was in a good humor.  We went outside and walked around a bit.  It is really steamy so it was a short walk.  He is doing better with his walker.  I think maybe the therapy is doing some good.

I stayed and had lunch with him.  Visited with some of the ladies who were visiting their hubbies.  I see the same ones all the time.  Every now and then I will see someone I don't know.  There are a fair number of these fellows that no one ever visits.

This one fellow in a wheel chair that is always telling me I am "sweet" came over to our table yesterday and sat there for the longest trying to engage in conversation.  He kept telling me how "pretty" I am.  He never has any visitors so I try to love on him a little and talk to him.  He is speech impaired so can be hard to converse but he loves to hold your hand and try.

I got up today and took the car to get it washed.  It had been awhile.  Long line.  Must be because people are off for the holiday.  I came back and took pictures of the Maserati for posting.  Will have lunch and then go to band practice.

Can't wear makeup starting today until a week after surgery.  Given that my face is broken out a bit I hate that but it is a good precaution.  If I could just stay in that would be good but too much going on.
