Friday, September 4

I just realized I had not posted in quite a spell and thought I better do it.  It's been two weeks.

I went to see Cowboy today.  He was getting a shave and shower and had just had a haircut a couple of days prior.  He has his new shoes and his new teeth.  What  a deal.  I gave him a manicure and he was looking very nice.

Only problem is he has lost his glasses.  We looked everywhere for his glasses and didn't find them.
Also, he can't remember how to remove his partial.  I called the dentist and he will come check it out sometime soon.

The other wives and I decided there must be a full moon.  There was a new fellow I had never seen before and I spoke to him.  He thought that gave him permission to "cat call" and come onto to me with some very salty language.  I just ignored him and moved on.  In a few minutes, Mr. Smith, a very sweet man who has been there longer than Cowboy comes over and says,  "If that fellow bothers you again, I will take care of him.  I will kill him.  Do you have a gun?"  Cowboy is sitting there with a very strange look on his face.    I tried to bring him around to another way of thinking but was not successful.  Pretty soon he leaves in his wheelchair.

Next up is another new fellow who comes over and starts pestering Cowboy and when Cowboy told him to go away, he laughed.  Cowboy got mad, bellowed at him and threatened to "whip his ass".  This was followed by two fellows getting into it about something.  I felt like running for the hills.  Fifteen minutes later just about everyone was asleep and things were calm.

Billy, who was so difficult to deal with and really aggravated Cowboy passed away last week.  He had a stroke.  Another gentleman passed away as well.

Today the sky was a beautiful blue, the clouds were large and fluffy, the traffic was not bad and I am now home in my easy chair.  The kids are coming over this weekend.

Thursday, August 20

Cowboy his teeth back, a guitar to play and we have an appt next week to get him a new pair of shoes.  I ordered him two more pair of jeans and they should be here soon.  For a while there he was down to one or no jeans and I complained.  Where had they all gone?  The following week there were 5 pair in his closet..  Go figure.

Not much luck with the guitar.  I will tune it and give it to him, he will pluck it a few times and then lose interest.  Doesn't seem to remember where to place his fingers.  We are going to leave it in his room for awhile and see what happens.

The activity aide said Cowboy is still focused on keeping seed out for the birds.  Between my purchases and hers we are keeping that going.  He also is interested in some plants that were put out.  He will stand there and pick out little bits of leaves and sticks and such and pull any little weed that appears.

We still walk around outside some but he can't go but about once or twice around and needs to quit.  His mood remains good most of the time.  He had been losing a little weight and they added more snacks and it has stabilized.

I attended the support meeting on Tuesday.  I like that they changed it to 1:30 and will keep going but am not sure it does much for me.  I do enjoy visiting with others.  This week we discussed hospice care and how it works.

It finally rained here last night.  We had gone 41 days without a drop.  It is nice and cool outside and I am going to go out and put a hex on all the weeds.

Tomorrow I will go see Cowboy.

Friday, August 7

I went to see Cowboy on Tuesday and will be going again tomorrow.  I stayed over Tuesday night and we went to see the dermatologist on Wednesday morning.  He removed the discoloration of one mole and said he was sure it was not cancerous.  He froze a second one as a precaution.  He said that Cowboy's skin was actually in very good shape for an 85 year old.  All good news.

After our appointment we played hooky and went to McDonald's and have a cup of coffee.  Cowboy really enjoyed it.

I met with staff on Wednesday as well.  We discussed the fact that he is not very active and not very social and what could we do that might stimulate him.  Since his only great loves are motorcycles and music and motorcycles are out we concentrated on the music idea.  I told them that they used to do karaoke sometimes and he would sing away maybe they could add that into their activities.  We also talked about him playing the guitar back in the day.  He quit about 5 or 6 years ago.  The social worker suggested we try that and I agreed to bring a guitar for him.

I gave one of his guitars to the school and sold his fender so I got on Amazon and ordered a guitar for him.  Nothing expensive but good enough to see if this works.

Cowboy gets his partial back this coming Monday.  We get to see the podiatrist later this month and will get him a new pair of diabetic shoes.  Progress...

Saturday, August 1

I can't even say what has happened in the last two weeks.  I guess it hasn't been much.

I have been researching potential trips I might take but nothing definite yet.  I also finally spent a couple of days going through old music.  I have managed to accumulate quite a bit and I never throw any away.  I still have stuff from before I was grown.

I made contact with a Red Hat group.  We went to a quaint little tea place called Kupa Tea.  Wonderful food.  They only meet once a month but I liked the ladies.  I look forward to having a little social activity.

I have been to see Cowboy twice in each of two weeks since I last posted.  We have fed the birds, taken walks, watched tv.  I have given him a manicure.  He has generally been fine.  We have two doctor appointments during August.  We are going to see a dermatologist about a mole on his back and a podiatrist and get him a new pair of shoes.  Just finished up with dental appointments.  He had two more teeth pulled and his partial is in the process of being modified.

I attended a support group meeting.  They were doing them at 4:30 and I had not been attending.  They changed it to 1:30 so  I can go and still get home at a reasonable time.  There were about 6 of us and we had a good discussion.

Saturday, July 18

Monday is my 71st birthday.   The kids are coming over tomorrow for a pool party.  That has become the way we entertain around here.  Supposed to be 98 degrees.

I went to the doctor and the eye doctor this week.   All is fine.  Glad that is out of the way.

Went to see Cowboy yesterday.  He was sitting in his room with no TV.  He had been punching all the buttons and lost the sound.  I managed  to figure it out and get it going again.

It seemed warm in the room and when I noticed Cowboy perspiring I thought it was that at first, but then he got soaking wet and turned lethargic so I went and got the nurse.  His blood sugar had dropped to 36.   She rushed out and got some orange juice with sugar in it and then came back again with regular orange juice and a doughnut.  After a few minutes it was up to 67 and after a bit longer we got it up to 103.  The whole thing was a little frightening.  I have seen his blood sugar drop before but never that low.

Coming home was a nightmare.  There was a traffic snarl that became a several mile long parking lot.  At one point it took  just short of an hour to go 4 miles.  Finally got home.

My daughter got home last night and is gone right now getting my car all cleaned up.  I didn't really want to do it myself in this heat.  Nice of her.

When I was at the home yesterday I was visiting with one of the ladies and she said she read that all of us should have at least 12 hugs a day to stay emotionally healthy.  It came up because we  both make it a point to hug our hubbies when we visit.  I told her I had some kind of deficit because sometimes I go for days without a hug.

Monday, July 13

I went to  see Cowboy and he had dental work on the 7th and then we had more today.  Two more appointments and we are done for this round.  His partial needs remodeling and he had two teeth pulled and two filled during the past few weeks.  I don't know whether it is poor dental care, age or a combination of both but he is definitely not doing well in the dental department.  I know he can eat better and enjoy it more when he can chew so I keep going.

The drive has been pretty good of late.  There is less construction and things move along pretty well.  The corn fields are growing, the sunflowers are growing and everything is green from all the rain.  The skies have been blue and filled with big puffy white clouds the last few trips and I have enjoyed the view.  This afternoon there were two great big oversized clouds that looked like two roadrunners going lickety split and it was fun to see.  When I was a little girl we used to lay in the yard and find critters and things in the cloud formations and see if our little friends could see them too.

My daughter and I got in the pool yesterday for quite a while and were enjoying ourselves and then decided to try to get the dog in.  She is not big on water but we put a vest on her and held her up and I think she thought it was OK.  We learned that boxers don't much like water and are not swimmers but my daughter is convinced she can teach her to enjoy it and dive right in.  We will see.

I went to see the gastroenterologist this past week and he thinks I am doing well.  He did suggest I add a serving of prune juice to my daily diet.  One more thing to do but guess I will try it.  anything to avoid getting clogged up.

I have an appointment with the eye doctor tomorrow for a checkup and then with my primary care provider Thursday.  I hate all this time at Dr offices.

My daughter got her truck all fixed up and picked it up this morning.  Interestingly there was almost $1000 difference between the first quote she got and the one we chose.  They did an awesome job and she is very happy of the savings in the cost.  Her truck looks like new.  She thinks we should keep it forever so that is the plan .  She leaves for Little Rock tomorrow.

Tuesday, June 30

When you don't post for a couple of weeks it can be a challenge to remember everything, but here goes.

Didn't go for the celebration Wed the 17th.  It was pouring out, there were storm and flood alerts, etc.  I haven't even thought to ask anyone how it went.  Must do that.

My daughter and I went to see Cowboy on Father's day and took him out for lunch.  He devoured the ribs and French fries with relish.  (I think his appetite is back!)

After we got home I dropped off my daughter at home and drove up to Tulsa.  Got there about 8:30PM.  On Monday I met some of the ladies from my old Red Hat group for lunch.  Then I spent the afternoon over coffee with Cowboy's daughter, granddaughter and two great grandchildren.  We had a nice visit.  In the evening I met some old work friends for dinner and drinks.  Great to see them.

On Tuesday had breakfast with old friends from AT&T.  We go back to the eighties and still keep in touch.  Then I went over to a friends house and visited for a couple of hours and then headed home.

On Wednesday I went to see Cowboy.   I gave him a manicure and we watched TV.  I can't tell how much of it he understands but he will chuckle sometimes at something funny on the TV.

Went to see him again on Saturday.  Turned out to be very light traffic which was nice.  It was raining so stayed in again.

On Sunday my daughter threw a  birthday party for her granddaughter who is turning 13.  There must have been 20 kids in the pool.  We started at 2 and the last guests left at 8.  Great time for everyone.  We will be eating leftovers for a week.

Yesterday my daughter and I spent some time checking out prices for some repairs on her truck.  that effort will take a few days as she wants multiple quotes before scheduling.  We also went to Discount tire and she bought two tires.

She has been working in town for a few days now and will continue to through the 4th.  Then off to El Paso for her and quiet for me.

Tomorrow I will be going to see Cowboy.  He has a dental appointment to have two teeth pulled and then we will discuss how to remodel his partial.
