Friday, September 4

I just realized I had not posted in quite a spell and thought I better do it.  It's been two weeks.

I went to see Cowboy today.  He was getting a shave and shower and had just had a haircut a couple of days prior.  He has his new shoes and his new teeth.  What  a deal.  I gave him a manicure and he was looking very nice.

Only problem is he has lost his glasses.  We looked everywhere for his glasses and didn't find them.
Also, he can't remember how to remove his partial.  I called the dentist and he will come check it out sometime soon.

The other wives and I decided there must be a full moon.  There was a new fellow I had never seen before and I spoke to him.  He thought that gave him permission to "cat call" and come onto to me with some very salty language.  I just ignored him and moved on.  In a few minutes, Mr. Smith, a very sweet man who has been there longer than Cowboy comes over and says,  "If that fellow bothers you again, I will take care of him.  I will kill him.  Do you have a gun?"  Cowboy is sitting there with a very strange look on his face.    I tried to bring him around to another way of thinking but was not successful.  Pretty soon he leaves in his wheelchair.

Next up is another new fellow who comes over and starts pestering Cowboy and when Cowboy told him to go away, he laughed.  Cowboy got mad, bellowed at him and threatened to "whip his ass".  This was followed by two fellows getting into it about something.  I felt like running for the hills.  Fifteen minutes later just about everyone was asleep and things were calm.

Billy, who was so difficult to deal with and really aggravated Cowboy passed away last week.  He had a stroke.  Another gentleman passed away as well.

Today the sky was a beautiful blue, the clouds were large and fluffy, the traffic was not bad and I am now home in my easy chair.  The kids are coming over this weekend.

Thursday, August 20

Cowboy his teeth back, a guitar to play and we have an appt next week to get him a new pair of shoes.  I ordered him two more pair of jeans and they should be here soon.  For a while there he was down to one or no jeans and I complained.  Where had they all gone?  The following week there were 5 pair in his closet..  Go figure.

Not much luck with the guitar.  I will tune it and give it to him, he will pluck it a few times and then lose interest.  Doesn't seem to remember where to place his fingers.  We are going to leave it in his room for awhile and see what happens.

The activity aide said Cowboy is still focused on keeping seed out for the birds.  Between my purchases and hers we are keeping that going.  He also is interested in some plants that were put out.  He will stand there and pick out little bits of leaves and sticks and such and pull any little weed that appears.

We still walk around outside some but he can't go but about once or twice around and needs to quit.  His mood remains good most of the time.  He had been losing a little weight and they added more snacks and it has stabilized.

I attended the support meeting on Tuesday.  I like that they changed it to 1:30 and will keep going but am not sure it does much for me.  I do enjoy visiting with others.  This week we discussed hospice care and how it works.

It finally rained here last night.  We had gone 41 days without a drop.  It is nice and cool outside and I am going to go out and put a hex on all the weeds.

Tomorrow I will go see Cowboy.

Friday, August 7

I went to see Cowboy on Tuesday and will be going again tomorrow.  I stayed over Tuesday night and we went to see the dermatologist on Wednesday morning.  He removed the discoloration of one mole and said he was sure it was not cancerous.  He froze a second one as a precaution.  He said that Cowboy's skin was actually in very good shape for an 85 year old.  All good news.

After our appointment we played hooky and went to McDonald's and have a cup of coffee.  Cowboy really enjoyed it.

I met with staff on Wednesday as well.  We discussed the fact that he is not very active and not very social and what could we do that might stimulate him.  Since his only great loves are motorcycles and music and motorcycles are out we concentrated on the music idea.  I told them that they used to do karaoke sometimes and he would sing away maybe they could add that into their activities.  We also talked about him playing the guitar back in the day.  He quit about 5 or 6 years ago.  The social worker suggested we try that and I agreed to bring a guitar for him.

I gave one of his guitars to the school and sold his fender so I got on Amazon and ordered a guitar for him.  Nothing expensive but good enough to see if this works.

Cowboy gets his partial back this coming Monday.  We get to see the podiatrist later this month and will get him a new pair of diabetic shoes.  Progress...

Saturday, August 1

I can't even say what has happened in the last two weeks.  I guess it hasn't been much.

I have been researching potential trips I might take but nothing definite yet.  I also finally spent a couple of days going through old music.  I have managed to accumulate quite a bit and I never throw any away.  I still have stuff from before I was grown.

I made contact with a Red Hat group.  We went to a quaint little tea place called Kupa Tea.  Wonderful food.  They only meet once a month but I liked the ladies.  I look forward to having a little social activity.

I have been to see Cowboy twice in each of two weeks since I last posted.  We have fed the birds, taken walks, watched tv.  I have given him a manicure.  He has generally been fine.  We have two doctor appointments during August.  We are going to see a dermatologist about a mole on his back and a podiatrist and get him a new pair of shoes.  Just finished up with dental appointments.  He had two more teeth pulled and his partial is in the process of being modified.

I attended a support group meeting.  They were doing them at 4:30 and I had not been attending.  They changed it to 1:30 so  I can go and still get home at a reasonable time.  There were about 6 of us and we had a good discussion.

Saturday, July 18

Monday is my 71st birthday.   The kids are coming over tomorrow for a pool party.  That has become the way we entertain around here.  Supposed to be 98 degrees.

I went to the doctor and the eye doctor this week.   All is fine.  Glad that is out of the way.

Went to see Cowboy yesterday.  He was sitting in his room with no TV.  He had been punching all the buttons and lost the sound.  I managed  to figure it out and get it going again.

It seemed warm in the room and when I noticed Cowboy perspiring I thought it was that at first, but then he got soaking wet and turned lethargic so I went and got the nurse.  His blood sugar had dropped to 36.   She rushed out and got some orange juice with sugar in it and then came back again with regular orange juice and a doughnut.  After a few minutes it was up to 67 and after a bit longer we got it up to 103.  The whole thing was a little frightening.  I have seen his blood sugar drop before but never that low.

Coming home was a nightmare.  There was a traffic snarl that became a several mile long parking lot.  At one point it took  just short of an hour to go 4 miles.  Finally got home.

My daughter got home last night and is gone right now getting my car all cleaned up.  I didn't really want to do it myself in this heat.  Nice of her.

When I was at the home yesterday I was visiting with one of the ladies and she said she read that all of us should have at least 12 hugs a day to stay emotionally healthy.  It came up because we  both make it a point to hug our hubbies when we visit.  I told her I had some kind of deficit because sometimes I go for days without a hug.

Monday, July 13

I went to  see Cowboy and he had dental work on the 7th and then we had more today.  Two more appointments and we are done for this round.  His partial needs remodeling and he had two teeth pulled and two filled during the past few weeks.  I don't know whether it is poor dental care, age or a combination of both but he is definitely not doing well in the dental department.  I know he can eat better and enjoy it more when he can chew so I keep going.

The drive has been pretty good of late.  There is less construction and things move along pretty well.  The corn fields are growing, the sunflowers are growing and everything is green from all the rain.  The skies have been blue and filled with big puffy white clouds the last few trips and I have enjoyed the view.  This afternoon there were two great big oversized clouds that looked like two roadrunners going lickety split and it was fun to see.  When I was a little girl we used to lay in the yard and find critters and things in the cloud formations and see if our little friends could see them too.

My daughter and I got in the pool yesterday for quite a while and were enjoying ourselves and then decided to try to get the dog in.  She is not big on water but we put a vest on her and held her up and I think she thought it was OK.  We learned that boxers don't much like water and are not swimmers but my daughter is convinced she can teach her to enjoy it and dive right in.  We will see.

I went to see the gastroenterologist this past week and he thinks I am doing well.  He did suggest I add a serving of prune juice to my daily diet.  One more thing to do but guess I will try it.  anything to avoid getting clogged up.

I have an appointment with the eye doctor tomorrow for a checkup and then with my primary care provider Thursday.  I hate all this time at Dr offices.

My daughter got her truck all fixed up and picked it up this morning.  Interestingly there was almost $1000 difference between the first quote she got and the one we chose.  They did an awesome job and she is very happy of the savings in the cost.  Her truck looks like new.  She thinks we should keep it forever so that is the plan .  She leaves for Little Rock tomorrow.

Tuesday, June 30

When you don't post for a couple of weeks it can be a challenge to remember everything, but here goes.

Didn't go for the celebration Wed the 17th.  It was pouring out, there were storm and flood alerts, etc.  I haven't even thought to ask anyone how it went.  Must do that.

My daughter and I went to see Cowboy on Father's day and took him out for lunch.  He devoured the ribs and French fries with relish.  (I think his appetite is back!)

After we got home I dropped off my daughter at home and drove up to Tulsa.  Got there about 8:30PM.  On Monday I met some of the ladies from my old Red Hat group for lunch.  Then I spent the afternoon over coffee with Cowboy's daughter, granddaughter and two great grandchildren.  We had a nice visit.  In the evening I met some old work friends for dinner and drinks.  Great to see them.

On Tuesday had breakfast with old friends from AT&T.  We go back to the eighties and still keep in touch.  Then I went over to a friends house and visited for a couple of hours and then headed home.

On Wednesday I went to see Cowboy.   I gave him a manicure and we watched TV.  I can't tell how much of it he understands but he will chuckle sometimes at something funny on the TV.

Went to see him again on Saturday.  Turned out to be very light traffic which was nice.  It was raining so stayed in again.

On Sunday my daughter threw a  birthday party for her granddaughter who is turning 13.  There must have been 20 kids in the pool.  We started at 2 and the last guests left at 8.  Great time for everyone.  We will be eating leftovers for a week.

Yesterday my daughter and I spent some time checking out prices for some repairs on her truck.  that effort will take a few days as she wants multiple quotes before scheduling.  We also went to Discount tire and she bought two tires.

She has been working in town for a few days now and will continue to through the 4th.  Then off to El Paso for her and quiet for me.

Tomorrow I will be going to see Cowboy.  He has a dental appointment to have two teeth pulled and then we will discuss how to remodel his partial.

Tuesday, June 16

I went to see Cowboy Sunday.  He was not feeling well.  I noticed a pile of dirty clothes and his stool was a mess.  That means he had an accident.  I know he hates that.  Notified  staff and we got him and his room tidied up.

We didn't go outside.  It was cloudy and sprinkling out.  Just watched some funny videos on TV and visited.

I will be going back tomorrow and taking a big bowl of potato salad.  We are having a luncheon to celebrate the June anniversaries.  Last time they did this it didn't get advertised enough and it doesn't appear it was this time so we will see how it goes.

I went and bought Cowboy more underwear yesterday.  I am going to take it, two bags of bird seed and some manicure tools with me tomorrow as well.  They are predicting heavy rain from a tropical storm so am watching the weather report.  Here's hoping........

My daughter is going with me on Fathers Day which is Sunday and take him out to eat.  She wanted to buy him a gift but don't know what you get for someone in his situation.

I have made plans to go to Tulsa next Monday for two days to see friends.  Then over the 4th of July will go to Georgetown to a picnic. My kids and grandkids are going to a lake with the jet skis and I don't want to do that.  They stay out all day.   Looking forward to some "me" time.

Tuesday, June 9

I went to see Cowboy last Thursday and then again yesterday.  I took more bird seed which really makes him happy.  We filled the feeders and I had lunch with him.

The drive down wasn't bad.  I enjoyed a field of orange flowers (think they are black eyed susans) and the golden fields of wheat ready to harvest.  The corn looks so much better this year.  It is really dark green and taller than I remember this time last year.  I bet they have a good crop.

We watched the birds.  There are the regular visitors, the sparrows, the doves, the mockingbirds.  But we also have a pair of cardinals and a pair of scarlet tanagers.  They really catch your eye.

On Thursday I took the dog and she managed to hunt down a bird and cripple it.  I rushed out and rescued it.  Don't know what it was.  About the size of a sparrow  but with a more slender body and a long slender beak.  I picked him up and put him in a tree and hoped for the best.  I wish I knew more about birds since Cowboy is so interested in them.

The dog is a bit of a challenge but the guys really enjoy her.  Had to leave before lunch Thursday because she doesn't behave well when food is around.

Talked to the nurse.  They have added another medication in the hope of improving Cowboy's appetite.  He isn't eating well right now.  We will see if it helps.  I also ask her to have someone look at a mole on his back that looks unusual and has changed from before.  She said they would do that.

Then yesterday we got his teeth cleaned.  He also has broken a tooth.   Don't know what will involved in addressing that.  It was the anchor for his partial on one side so may be a big deal.

One of our two air conditioners failed today.  I am not surprised.  It is about 18 years old.  Am in the process of having inspections and quotes done.  It is going to be a big expense.  The other unit is only about 3 years old so it should be good for a long time.

I will be going back on Thursday.  In the meantime am thinking about going up to Tulsa to visit friends and maybe to Georgetown for the same thing.  No real plans yet but am working on it.

Sunday, May 24

We are having a really soggy Memorial Day weekend.  It rains every day.  Last night we had a tornado warning.  May in Texas !  I couldn't help but think about California and how much they would appreciate some of this water.

My daughter took a couple of days off and we drove down to see Cowboy on Friday.  I called the home that morning and told them we were taking him to lunch and he had been showered, shaved and had on a clean white shirt.  We went to Applebees because he likes their ribs.  This time he studied the menu for a long time but it was the dessert and drink menu.  Then he announced they didn't have ribs.  We finally interested him in fish and chips.

I took another bag of birdseed and left it with the aide.  Couldn't put it out because it was raining.

Yesterday my daughter and I went shopping and bought birthday gifts for a birthday party for one of her granddaughters (my great granddaughter).  They had planned a party at a park but had to change things up because (wait for it)......it was raining.  We ended up at a place called "Going Bonkers"  It was filled with kids and very noisy.  We had a room and managed to put way too many people in a small space but the kids loved the pizza and the very fancy cake.

Tuesday, June 2

Yesterday was the 38th anniversary for Cowboy and I.  I went to spend the day with him.  I had not been there since the previous Thursday, mostly because of rain and more rain and the flooding that we were experiencing.

There will be a celebration for the residents who have an anniversary in June on the 17th, with food and balloons, etc.

He was asleep when I  got there.  First thing I did was look for the TV remote.  We finally found it in his sock drawer.  He seemed like he didn't feel great.  He had not been  out and it was a beautiful day.  We went out and filled the bird feeders and then sat on a bench and enjoyed the weather.  So good to see the sun after all the storms and grey skies.

When lunch was served he only ate some of his fruit and some of the milk.  Did not seem to want to eat.  I felt rather  concerned so let the nurse know.  I called today and was told he seemed OK today.

I have been feeling a little bit bummed for the last few days.  Don't have a clue why.  Maybe I need more sunshine.  Now I can get it.  I went out this morning and worked in the yard and soaked it up.

I plan to go see Cowboy again on Thursday.

Tuesday, May 19

I went to see Cowboy yesterday.  There was some excitement in Waco.  A bunch of motorcycle gangs had a big fight and the authorities were called.  170 arrested, 8 killed and 18 wounded.  The restaurant where it happened is right along the interstate.  There were more police cars and newspeople  than you can imagine.  Slow going through Waco.

Cowboy was laying down when I got there.  Unusual for him in the middle of the morning.  It was warm and really humid outside but we went out for a little while and then sat inside for awhile.  I then realized I had meant to put my car keys in my pocket but they were not there.  I seem to do this every few years.  I left my purse in the car and put the keys in my purse instead of my pocket.  A call to AAA brought help and I was on my way.  Talk about feeling foolish.

One of the girls at the home, we call her Yo Yo, talked me to me for a while and we decided to change Cowboy's bath to the morning.  She said she doesn't think the night staff is bathing him as often as they are scheduled to.  He really likes her and she looks after him.  Most of the staff is really good.  I clipped his nails for him and we washed his teeth and dentures really good and he had a shave.  He seemed to be very chipper.

This morning I got up and went and had a manicure and went looking for batteries for a couple of watches.  I then went to WalMart.  I was needing bins for all the pool toys we seem to collect so I can corral them.

It was raining when I got home and I needed to take the pup out.  She does not like water and rain!  When we came in the mud came with us.  It is supposed to rain all week.  At least the lakes are filling up nicely.  The problem is the yard is almost like a small lake.

Friday, May 15

I know, I know.  Every two weeks is not enough.  I am good but have been busy.  I went to see Cowboy Monday and again yesterday.  He is cheerful and talks constantly about the birds and the squirrels.  I think I am going to have to take seed every visit.  They are hungry critters.

I was in New York for a visit with my daughter from the 5th to the 10th  She is really into quilting now and has made some really beautiful quilts.  She also gardens and I watched her hubby carry in two trailer loads of soil in preparation.  He is a really good guy.

The weather was perfect, about 80.  Of course they were complaining about it being hot for this time of year.

They have three cats and two dogs.  One is a recently acquired border collie.  He is beautiful to watch leap into the air and fetch a frizby or a ball.  I had a great time.  Also got to visit with my granddaughter and her little son who is 5.  Did some shopping although I need absolutely nothing.  Came home with a couple of Tshirts and a pair of shoes and some earrings.

Cowboy was saying yesterday, "you see that guy over there?  He has on my new jeans."  A check with staff told me that wasn't the case but he believes it just the same.  Charlie had lunch with us again.  He and Cowboy seem to hang out a lot.

It has been raining and raining and raining and everything is soaked outside.  We are no longer in drought here which is good but I am ready for some sunshine.

Today is a rare day with little to do.  Perhaps I will just do nothing.

Friday, May 1

I think this is the longest I have gone without posting.  I am sorry.  I think I am growing weary of trying to post on a schedule that others may expect.

I picked up our little dog "Sheba" and kept her for about 10 days.  She is the cutest thing and a joy to have around but unfortunately I was never able to get to the point where she and my daughters dog liked each other.  The boxer pup was sure the thing to do was to jump and lunge at Sheba and she was terrified of the much larger dig,  She just wants to play.  OK, I will just keep then apart.  We had indoors, we had outdoors we we had the crates.  Unfortunately, it rained a lot the  last few days so that eliminated outdoors.  It was a Mexican hat dance to keep them apart and happy.  I don't think I am likely to do this again.  They are both wonderful one on one but a nightmare to manage together.  The nights were the worst.  They both thought they should sleep with me.

I took Sheba home on the 27th.  She was very glad to be home with her "Mommy" and I was relieved to not worry about her any more.  But now I miss her.

I had visited Cowboy on the 25th and we hung some suet for the birds.  I brought some more bird seed recently but it was all gone.  This could get expensive if we need a 10 pound bag of bird seed every time I visit.  I went again on the 28th.  He is definitely feeling more chipper.

I have now officially finished all the work I had planned for the house.  Yeah !!  I even have the grandfather  clock fixed.

I went to see Cowboy today.  He was in good spirits.  I took him two new pair of jeans and three new shirts. He was pleased.  We had a catfish lunch and watch a show about the Texas Rangers.  A good visit.

He has a eating companion named Charlie.  He seems so normal until you realize everything he tells you is from sometime in the past and after a few visits you find he is repeating himself on some subjects.  Despite that, he is a pleasant man and easy to talk to.  I think Cowboy likes him.

The drive was a challenge today.  Terrible amount of traffic.  Sometimes there seems to be no logic to it.

The good news.....I am feeling much better.....Cowboy is feeling more cheerful.  The dogs are where they want to be.  The house is done.

I am going to visit my older daughter next week that lives in upstate New York.  The change of scene will be good for me.  Her birthday is next week.  She will be 52.  Makes me feel kind of old.

Thursday, April 16

Some of you may wonder if I fell off the planet.  I actually wrote a post the other day and then somehow hit the wrong button and it went away.  I intended to go back and write it again but I didn't.  What can I say.

On Monday I drove down to my old home and had a very nice lunch with 14 ladies from my old neighborhood.  we had a really good time.  It was so nice to see them.  I miss them.

I then drove up to see Cowboy.  Upon arrival I learned that he had gotten upset that morning because another patient was in his bed.  He had shouted at him and then took off his belt and took after him with it.  I found it very upsetting.  He was still in a foul mood when I got there and I talked to him for awhile and we walked around outside.  It may be that we are entering a new phase.  He seems agitated and unhappy which is new.

I talked to staff and they are adding an anti-anxiety med.  Later I talked to the nurse on duty and learned that his Prozac had been discontinued at some point.  I was never advised of this and no explanation has been given.  I then called the care plan supervisor and she is going to check into it.  I have a care plan meeting with staff next Wednesday so we can figure this all out.  When Cowboy was prescribed the Prozac about 4 years ago it made a big difference in his behavior and outlook.

After my visit I drove to Ft Hood so could meet with JAG the next morning.  I need to update my will.  Right now everything would go to Cowboy and I need to appoint someone to manage his affairs if something should happen to me before he passes.  Not fun to think about but it will be far less of a problem for the family if it is all laid out.  I go back next week to finish up and sign, etc.

Then I went back to Georgetown and visited with a good friend and had supper and then visited the dulcimer group's get together.  I enjoyed watching them rehearse and visit, etc.  Then back to my friends for a glass of wine and conversation.

Yesterday I went by the house of the lady who has our little dog now.  I am going to pet sit for a few days while she goes on a cruise.

I have felt much better the last couple of days but had a doctor's appointment today.  He believes the tummy upset is just part of the bout of flu I have been through.

I am enjoying the pup.  She is a trip.  Our new pup, the boxer comes home today from being spayed and being boarded while I was away.  It may be a challenge to keep them both happy but they both have a crate and we have the fenced back yard so it should be manageable.

I have really enjoyed the wildflowers while doing all this driving.  The bluebonnets are everywhere and they are so healthy and bright and profuse.  Sprinkled in with that are yellow flowers, and orange flowers and white flowers and pink flowers and it is all just beautiful.  It is an "upper".

We are having the little bit of floor that has not been done put in next week.  We will hang the drapes in the game room this weekend.  We are almost finished with all the planned work.  Thank goodness.  I am now officially sick of messing with the house.  I am ready to get into some activities and meet some old ladies like myself.  It would be nice to have someone to go to the movies with or to dinner or shopping.

I am thinking about an aqua class at the Y.  I am also going to check at the music store about opportunities for playing.

I will be going back to see Cowboy on Sunday if it is not storming.  I hope he is doing better.

Sunday, April 5

A week ago I was doing pretty well .  I went to see Cowboy on Tuesday and I took the dog.  We had a nice time outside and he was doing OK.

I had planned on going back on Friday to celebrate his 85th birthday.  His eldest daughter was coming down.  I started feeling pretty rough again on Wednesday and found myself with an upset digestive system and fatigue and weakness.  Sure I would be better I bought plates and napkins, ordered a cake and made my plans.  I was worse Thursday and even worse on Friday.  I had no interest in doing anything except laying in bed and hoping that I wouldn't have to get up and go to the bathroom AGAIN.

I was glad that his daughter was there to say happy birthday and spend some time with him.  they had an Easter Egg hunt and Cowboy found the most eggs.  She send me a photo of him eating a chocolate egg.  I called to make sure he didn't eat all of them but too late, he had already done so.  So good for the blood sugar levels.

I had decided to call the doc on Monday if I wasn't better.  I want to know what is the matter with me.  I have lost 8 pounds in the last month.  I actually felt better today.  I know I am dehydrated and probably am weak  because I haven't eaten much so I actually got up today, took a shower and cooked myself some breakfast.  I am still going to call the doc but it is possible the worst is behind me.

I plan to go see Cowboy tomorrow.  I have talked to him on the phone a couple of times and he seems fine.

Sunday, March 29

I am finally beginning to feel a  little better.  Still have tummy upset and no appetite but not coughing much.  Still feel rather drained.  My sister in New Mexico was in the hospital for 5 days but is home now with an oxygen tank.  My sister in Colorado is feeling better but not great.  Wow, what an experience.  Haven't been so sick ever.  The New Mexico Health Dept notified my sister that she had a strain of flu.  It was apparently not included in the flu shot this year.  She is home now with an oxygen tank.  My sister in Colorado is better but not great.  What an awful experience.

I went to see Cowboy on Tuesday and we saw the dentist and they pulled another tooth.  Need to slow this down or he will be toothless!  I have spent a lot of time just sleeping but went to see him again on Friday and he was fine.  I took the pup and we spent some time outside.  Lovely weather.  He really enjoys the dog. We turn her loose and she just runs and runs.  It is a joy to watch.

I am having the back fence replaced this week.  It is about to fall down.  Between that and visiting Cowboy my week will be pretty busy.

I went over to my grandson # 2 today and his wife cut my hair.  Tomorrow I hope to get my toenails spiffed up and then I may feel half human.  Have a little shopping to do and then off to see Cowboy again on  Tuesday.

Monday, March 23

I have been sooooo sick.  But maybe I should start by catching you up.

I was just getting over a cold when my sisters came to visit.  On their second day here I relapsed and had a really tortuous cough, body aches, diarrhea and lack of appetite.

Despite not feeling well we proceeded to go see Cowboy on Thursday.  We took the dogs (my sister brought her Rottweiler mix to visit too).  We had a good visit and the fellows at the home loved the dogs.  We turned them loose for a while in the yard and they played.  After lunch (with the dogs put back in the car) I played a program for the residents and we had a sing along.

On Friday we went to the Dillards warehouse and came away with a few clothing items.  Pretty cool place, didn't even know about it.

On Saturday we drove to Denison, TX to see our brother and his wife.  We had lunch and visited and talked about our youth.  good time.

Saturday night we took my younger sister and my daughter out to  celebrate their  birthdays.  My sister turned 68 and my daughter turned 50.  We ate at SaltGrass.  I had no appetite and brought most of my meal home but we had a good time.

On Sunday everybody was thoroughly sick.  Both my sisters had the same symptoms I had.  The visit was cut a little short and everyone headed home.

As of today my older sister is in the hospital with pneumonia and my younger sister has been put to bed by her doctor for a minimum of two days and our sister-in-law is ill with tummy problems.  This must be some kind of flu but I cannot remember being this sick in years.

I am finally feeling a little better today.  The sun is shining and it is beautiful out.

I am going to go see Cowboy tomorrow.  He is having a tooth pulled.

My daughter finally took some time to do a little shopping and has ordered a bar and a small fridge for the game room.  She is excited to get it all finished.

The workmen did not finish Friday so were here Monday.  I went to see Cowboy and left grandson #4 in charge.  He must have called me six times with questions but everything got done and when I got home I signed off.  YEA !

Cowboy saw the dentist and he has another tooth that has to be pulled.  I got another lecture about daily cleaning.  I talked to the home again and so it goes....I suspect he doesn't cooperate most of the time.

My older sister arrived last night.  Today we go to the airport to pick up my younger sister.  Hoping for a good visit.

Friday, March 6

This has been a goofy week.  I went to see Cowboy on Tuesday because the predictions were for bad weather the rest of the week.  and it has been.  Fourth largest snow ever in March, more snow than has been seen in years, one day with 1/4 inch ice covered by 4 inches of snow.  This city just shuts down because they don't have the staff and equipment to handle the roads.

The workers couldn't get here two days this week so they are still here.  We are not done.  They said they would finish today.  I sure hope so.  I have things to do to get everything straightened up before my sisters arrive.  Right now the game room is full of  bedroom furniture and music room furniture.

I am supposed to play at the home next week and I can't get to anything to prepare.

Talked to Cowboy this morning.   I let him know the dentist will be there on Monday to clean his teeth.  He is also complaining of a toothache.  The nurse gave him Tylenol.  After I thought about it awhile  I called them back and suggested they remove his bridge and clean it and clean his teeth.  He could just have something lodged in there.  Since he was just seen three months ago by the dentist a toothache seems strange.

The sun is shining, the snow is melting and it is supposed to be in the 60's this coming week.  If I can get the workmen out of here today and spend some time this weekend organizing things my mood will definitely improve.  I am excited about my sisters' visit.

I have been tied up with this house for so long and thought I would come home from my trip with time to explore some social activities and instead have spent the past month with things all torn up and dust everywhere, etc.  At one point there were workmen in two of the bathrooms and they had the door off of the remaining one.  Couldn't even go to the bathroom.

While my sisters are here we will go visit Cowboy, probably next Thursday.  I decided to make my other visit this coming Monday so can be there when he sees the dentist.  I will be playing for the residents on Thursday as well.

Next Saturday my sisters and I will go see our brother who lives a couple of hours away.  His wife is in a wheelchair with MS and my house cannot accommodate that so we will go see him.  This will be the first time we have all been in the same room since another of my sisters passed away.  That was five years ago.

We got the pup back from her training last Saturday and she is doing good.  It is hard to get her outside to do her business in the wet and snow but have had some luck with that and she understands and responds to some of the commands.  She is still very much a "baby".  I just remind myself of that saying, "Happiness is a warm puppy".    I took her with me on Tuesday to the home and the guys just adore her and the staff thinks she is beautiful.  She rides very well and didn't have any accidents.  Her trainer told me that boxers do not make good therapy dogs because they are easily excited.  Well, she seems to be doing OK with them.  She loves the attention.

Saturday, February 28

I have readers fussing at me because it is so long between posts.  It is a combination of busy, distracted, frustrated and just plain lazy.

The past week has been largely taken up with poorly motivated workers, a less than competent project manager (could do a much better job than this young man), bad weather, poor communication and bad estimates.  I am so tired of this whole business.  The good news is the work is almost completed and then I can concentrate on getting things in order.

My sisters will be here on the 11th.  We have been trying to put this visit together for two years and now I am the problem.  It is going to happen whether the house is ready or not.

Our puppy came home today.  She is doing really well.  I never thought I would see her so obedient.  Now I just have to do all the right things and we have a well trained dog..  It is hard  because the weather is terrible and it is downright dangerous to go outside and it is really cold.  At the moment she is laying on me in the easy chair and snoring so loud I can hear her.  It is really kind of funny.

My daughter was trying to get home on Thursday from Fresno  but due to the weather she finally got home this morning at 9AM  (long story), but doesn't have her luggage and has to leave in the AM for Baltimore.  I don't know how she does it.  The good news is she is banking some good earnings.

I went to see Cowboy on Monday and again yesterday.  Despite the weather he is in a good humor and is eating well and sleeping well.  He was actually outside walking around in 38 degree weather yesterday when I got there.  He was excited about all the birds that were eating and playing.  There were lots of birds and they were having a great time.

Terrible coming home.  The weather is playing havoc with this part of Texas.

I talked to my daughter in New York today.  Wanted to tell her how much Cowboy liked the lap quilt she made for him.  It is patriotic and colorful.  She told me they have 18 inches of snow and it is supposed to be 17 below tonight.  Guess I shouldn't complain.

I always look forward to spring but really need it this year.

Thursday, February 19

I went to see Cowboy on Monday.  It was cold and wet and traffic was awful.  We spent a couple of hours watching TV and out in the day room visiting with each other and others.  There are a couple of new ladies that are becoming regulars.  Cowboy was in a good mood.

On Tuesday I had the clock people out.  When I moved here the grandfather clock developed problems but I had put off getting it repaired.  Finally decided I really needed to.   It also keeps it out of harms way while all those fellows are here.

Yesterday the company doing the house repairs came out and did a walk through.  The work list has changed about four times.  It is getting more real now but still a lot of work.  We are down to less than $20,000.  Still seems like an insane amount.

They are starting the work today and I am waiting on them now.

I have a terrible cold.  For someone like me who rarely gets a cold it caught me by surprise.  Have coughed all night for three days now.  I hate it !!  When I went to see Cowboy on Monday he had one too.   Guess either I gave it to him or he gave it to me.

I will be going to see Cowboy again tomorrow.  The workmen tell me that I can leave and they put a lock box on the door for me to put a key in.  I went to WalMart and had another key made.  I came home and it wouldn't work.  Back to WalMart for another key.  Brought it home and it doesn't work.  Makes no sense.  They line up and look the same.  Don't know what to do.  Guess for the short term I will use my key and the lock box.

Our pup is at obedience school this week.  Surprisingly I find I miss her.  It is interesting how quickly looking after her has become part of my day.  Hope she comes back knowing how to obey commands.  I had made good progress with her.  She would sit and get down, etc but in about half a second she was doing the same thing again.  She has the attention span of a knat.

Thursday, February 12

I just figured out that a post I  did the other day somehow didn't get saved.  Probably my own lack of skill.

So much going on right now.  It has been a nightmare.  Four days of very loud fans, then several days of folks in the house figuring out everything that needs to be repaired, then the negotiations between the insurance folks and the contractor.  I think we are almost there.  I want all of this resolved and the work done.  My two remaining sisters and I have planned a get together for March and I want it all done before then.  Am I deluding myself?

Just this minute had a call from the contractor and am hoping to talk to the "flooring specialist" with the insurance company tomorrow.  Originally they were talking a complete floor replacement but I don't want to do that and it is absolutely not necessary.  Come on.....$32,000 to replace all of the floor !!  I only pay the deductible but still.........

I went to see Cowboy on Monday and again today.  He is doing fine.  I took him a little valentine bear and a small box of candy and a card.  He was pleased.  Won't get back for actual Valentine's day, too much here.

There are three of the men who I was fond of who have passed away recently.  It is sad and at times hard to deal with.  I am talking about fellows who would talk to me and give me a hug (and I gave them hugs too).  Herman was the most recent.  He was always cheerful and affectionate and behaved like a gentleman.  I was surprised as he didn't seem that far along on his journey.  He passed while I was on my trip.

Cowboy has made friends with a couple of fellows who arrived recently.  He doesn't make friends easily but I am pleased that he has met some fellows to whom he can relate.  Their names are "Charlie" and "Pete".  They talk to him regularly and Charlie eats at his table.

I managed to get my teeth cleaned, a pedicure, pick up the cleaning and get the oil changed in the car this week, despite all the appointments that were on the calendar.  I also got my  taxes finished.  I am going to have to pay this year so will wait until right before April 15 to actually send them in.

Tomorrow I take the dog to "Puppy College".  She will be there for two weeks learning how to respond to commands and how to behave.  My daughter set it up.  She is adorable but a real challenge.  So much energy !!  Here's hoping we get the desired results.

I plan to concentrate on getting the house clean the next day or two in preparation for the onslaught on  painters, etc.  The bathrooms are in need of attention.

Monday, February 2

I got back this past Thursday and am still recovering.  Nothing likem16 hours of traveling to remind you about your age.

I had a great time.  We had absolutely perfect weather until the last day in Buenos Aires when it rained, hard at times.  We had one bad travel day when a flight was cancelled and we spent all day and half the night at the airport before we got to fly to Santiago.

I went to see Cowboy on Friday and my daughter and the dog went too.  He held me a long time and we both almost cried.  Cowboy is doing OK.  Seems very stable right now.  He loves the dog and we went outside and let him work with her.  He loved that.

I am going back today to see him.  Will  be back on a schedule of twice weekly.  Leaving when I finish this.

Now for the bad news.  While I was gone my daughter, who sometimes sleep walks, apparently got up during the night and turned on the faucet in the bathroom full blast.  It was hours before she got up and found it.  She cleaned it up with every towel in the house.  Then she discovered it had seeped down to the first floor and wet the ceiling so she mopped up some more.

I didn't hear about it til I got home.  She didn't want to spoil my trip.  Neither one of us realized the serious nature of it but I knew I needed to have someone look at it.

Turns out not only the ceiling  but the walls got soaked.  I now have holes in the ceiling, cut outs in the walls and these huge noisy fans going all over the house.  They had to take up part of the floor on the second floor to dry out the sub floor.  What a mess.  They tell me it will take 3 to 5 days to dry everything out and then there will be reconstruction to put everything  back together.

The insurance company offered me a hotel room  because I do not presently have access to mine but I chose to bunk upstairs.  I have too much to do and need to stay here.

Am off to see Cowboy.  More later........

Wednesday, January 7

It is countdown time.  I leave Saturday the 10th on my trip.  First to Miami, then Lima, Peru and then on to various points in Chile and Argentina.  Have had advice to bring back wine, woven goods, leather goods and to be sure and sample their beef.  I will try but can only pack 44 pounds total (and I do need to wear clothes for almost three weeks).

I am getting really excited about the trip and some time away and a change of scene.  I went to see Cowboy this past Saturday.  He was doing fine.   I explained to him about the trip.  He said "I wish you wouldn't go".  I responded "Why, are going to miss me?"  He said "No, I am afraid you will get cold".

I plan to go see him tomorrow and then it will be three weeks until I see him again.  The girls will be checking on him I am sure.  Need to talk to them before I leave.  I will be able to be contacted but would take a while to get back if something should go wrong.  Longest I have been away.  When we went to Africa back in 2001 we were gone for 21 days and I decided then, that was about my limit.

Am about finished with the house, for the short term anyway.  Still want to buy a better range and microwave, replace the tile in the front hall and replace the fence in back.  It will probably be a little while before I get started.  Need to some time to develop some outside activities so will probably focus on that when I get back.

Saturday, January 3

A friend notified me today and wondered why I have not posted.  Well I have no excuses except I would think about it when it was inconvenient and forget about it when it was convenient.  or maybe I am becoming a "slug".

Christmas week was pretty busy around here.  My daughter and I went to see Cowboy on Monday and took the pup.  She was a big hit.  Cowboy enjoyed her and even tried to take her for a walk.  The other residents wanted to pet her and a couple of them wanted her in their lap.  We had a good visit.

Just about every day some member of the family came by to open presents.  We were the location they had to work in their busy schedules.  Grandson #2 and his family had to go to New Jersey that week.  Her grandmother had died.  We finally had Christmas for their kids on New Years day.

On Christmas day grandson #4 went with me and we drove to the home and had Christmas dinner with Cowboy.

On Sunday Cowboy's younger daughter and her four children (which includes triplets) drove down to see Cowboy with me.  He couldn't remember their names and he kept confusing the older girl with her mother.  We took Cowboy to Applebee's and had lunch.  It was a nice time.  We got him ribs and he ate every bite.

What did I do this past week?  Went to the doctor for my follow up on Monday.  My upper GI tract needs help.  I have gastritis and something whose name I can't remember that means part of the lining from my tummy is creeping up into my esophagus.  Now he says, no spicy food, no chocolate, no cola, no alcohol, don't eat for three hours before bedtime, etc.  I told him he had just taken a lot of fun out of my life.

I spent quite a bit of time emptying the files of 2014 and starting to organize things for doing taxes.  I spent hours looking for my paperwork for filing for homestead and I cannot find it.  It is no small thing as it includes a registered copy of my power of attorney and a letter from the VA verifying Cowboy's status with them.  It has got to be here somewhere!!

Grandson #4 was here yesterday and we changed the filters on the HVAC, packed up and put away all the holiday decorations and put together a lamp.  Whew!

See, I have been busy.
