Monday, April 29

I had so many things on my to do list Friday I forgot to go get my blood drawn.  no biggy....will do it Monday. I tried a new hairdresser and rather like her.  Will keep going for awhile and see if it works out.   I did my errands, bought some more petunias (they were out of purple so got magenta) and headed over to the home.  I had the dog groomed and had her cut in a "teddy bear cut".  She looks adorable and will enjoy the shorter hair during the warm weather.

Cowboy was having lunch and he did eat good.  I suggested we go plant the flowers.  He wasn't very interested and said he needed to go to the bathroom.  I took the things out to the yard and started, thinking he would show up but he didn't.  Doesn't take long to put half a dozen petunias in.  When I went in he was is in room watching TV.  What do suppose these guys did before TV?

Saturday I went to dulcimer practice, then to look for a pair of sandals.  My brown ones simply fell apart !  Bought some black slip ons and stopped by the grocery.  There is a neighborhood get together this evening and I needed something to take.  Settled on strawberries, blackberries, pineapple with a dip of cream cheese and marshmallow cream.  If you haven't tried this you should.  It is totally decadent.

The neighborhood party went well.  I was supposed to be a dealer for some blackjack but the the turnout was small and they didn't need me.  I was actually glad.  Been a while since I played and not sure I would have done well.

Went to the home yesterday.  Cowboy was lethargic and disinterested in everything.  We talked a little bit, watched TV and he looked at the comics.  I always take the paper with me and he looks at the comics.  I always stop and talk to the fellows when I am there and try to give them a hug when I can.  This one fellow who is in a wheelchair, whose name I cannot recall, was looking very forlorn.  I gave him and hug and asked him how he was doing.  He said "you are a sweet lady".  Little times like that are very touching.  I am getting to know a lot of the patients and with a couple of exceptions they are really sweet guys.

Ran down this morning and got my blood drawn, went to McDonalds and had an egg McMuffin, went to the bank and the WalMart and came home and did laundry and little tidy up chores.  Still have to make the bed. It is a big bed and it takes all I can muster to get it made. The mattress is huge and very heavy.   Have thought about getting something more manageable but probably won't.   It is a perfectly good bed.

Tomorrow some of the neighborhood ladies are going to visit the governor's mansion and have lunch.  A day out sounds good.

Thursday, April 25

My day started with my being motivated enough to make oatmeal.  It was cold this morning and it really hit the spot. ( The dog liked it too.)

We played at one of the Alzheimer's daycare locations this morning.  It was at the non-denominational church here in our community.  The dulcimer group has been playing there on a regular basis for about 7 years. and I have been for about 6 years.  Of course, with Cowboy sick I wasn't able to participate much the last couple of years.    There was one fellow who looked like he was asleep through the whole program til we did "Amazing Grace" at the end.  Then he woke up and sang with us.

Then I went to Kohl's and took advantage of a sale and a 20% off coupon and bought a hand vacuum to clean up around here.  I had one but it just wasn't working very well anymore.

Then I had a doctors appointment so I can get my prescriptions refilled.  All looks good.  Labs tomorrow AM, then take dog to groomer and then I am getting a haircut.  All of that before I head over to see Cowboy.

Someone pulled up some of our flowers !!  Man, that was frustrating.  I plan to stop and get some more in the AM before go over to see Cowboy.  The staff has no idea who or why.  We lost about 6 plants, not a huge deal.

Yesterday at the home was more chaotic than usual.  As I was getting there they were taking Cowboy to physical therapy.  This resulted from him having difficulty getting around and getting out of his chair.  I hope it helps.  I read the paper while waiting for his return, then we walked around and looked at the flowers.  They are doing pretty well.

When we went to sit down for lunch there was a fellow, don't know his name, who was talking really loudly and constantly.   He covered everything from politics to economics to an engineering project in Argentina to the origin of the word "ain't".  Don't know his background but suspect he is well educated and smart.  So sad. He was getting on everyone's nerves.  A couple of the guys were very annoyed.   I have read that there is a higher level of intelligence in many dementia patients than in the general population.

Don, the fellow who got in bed with Cowboy a while back, was wandering around taking food from everyone's plate and generally making a nuisance of himself.  In response he was being yelled at.   This one fellow pulled himself up to the table usually occupied by Jim, Bob, Herman and Lee next to Cowboy.    They didn't want him there and were raising a ruckus.  Never have seen so much confusion, noise and general mayhem.  It was unsettling to say the least.  As I was leaving after a while one of the aides was just shaking her head.  It was stressful for the staff as well as the rest of us.

Wednesday, April 24

I had a list of little chores around here and a pile of laundry so focused on that Monday and Tuesday.  Got the AC inspected Monday and then yesterday the roofers came.  It was bang, bang, bang all day but all the shingles were on before they left.  They worked from 8 AM til 8 PM with only a stop for a sandwich.  They were very cooperative and cleaned up after themselves really well.  Guess someone will come today to do the gutters but not sure.

Our poor pup was a wreck.  She stayed hidden somewhere most of the day.  If I happen to sit down here she came and got in my lap and huddled.

I plan to go to see Cowboy today and stay through lunch.  It is cold and windy.  Won't be taking any kind of walk today!  Can't get over this crazy weather.  I don't remember it ever being this cold in late April around here.

I have heard from most of my friends in Tulsa that I want to try to see so almost have that all lined out.  I have known some of these folks for more than 25 years and then there are my old Red Hat friends from the early 2000's that had so much fun with and really bonded.  Will also spend some time with Cowboy's daughter, grand daughter and her kids.  Her little boy is taking violin.  I am so thrilled that someone has interest.  I am looking forward to the trip.  Haven't been there in about 3 years I think.

Sunday, April 21

I went to dulcimer practice yesterday.  We have a new fellow, a cello player.  Our group gets more interesting all the time.  I spent the afternoon taking a long walk and planting flowers in our yard and in pots for the patio.  a lot of work.  I then washed down the patio.

I went to see Cowboy today.  I got there about 10.  He was asleep.  I woke him up and we chatted a little bit and then he dozed off again.  About 11:30 I woke him and we went outside and took a short walk.  He had a really hard time getting up out of his chair and I ended up getting an aide to help get him up.  Once on his feet he was ready to go outside.  We admired the flowers and the wonderful weather.  Then we went in for lunch.  He ate pretty good but seemed kind of lackluster.  We went back to his room and visited for a little bit and then he fell asleep again.  I came on home and spent the rest of the day outside putting in the rest of the flowers and taking a walk.  A neighbor came over about 5 and we visited a few minutes.

I made some phone calls this afternoon.  Plan to take a trip to Tulsa the end of May to see old friends and family and am trying to line it all out.  Looking forward to it.

Friday, April 19

I had been thinking about a different car for some time.  The convertible is not terribly safe in an accident, it is hard to lift things into the trunk. I sit down low in the seat, visibility is poor, have to ask friends every time I want to haul anything.  It was purchased for Cowboy in 2007 as an enticement to give up his motorcycle.  He loves convertibles and has owned several.  When I met him he was driving a FIAT spider.  Talk about being unprotected and sitting down low !  Of course we sold it when we married.  You couldn't get us and my two teens in a two seater.

I was sitting there at the car wash thinking that I actually had some extra time on Wednesday and how might I spend it?  I decided to go look at cars.  Well, actually I already knew what I wanted, a Toyota RAV4.  My eldest grandson has one, I had driven it and I really like its look.  So off I went.  As so many people do, I came home with a new SUV.  I really love it.  It was scary spending that much money but I should be able to drive this vehicle for 10 years easy.

I went to the home yesterday.  I didn't get into a discussion about the car.  Will do that Sunday, maybe take him for a ride.  Yesterday we had to meet with a fellow from the VA Fiduciary agent.

This all started a bout 2 years ago when I had the doctor write a letter to the VA telling them that Cowboy had dementia and I would have to handle his affairs.  All I was after was for those folks to be willing to talk to me about issues that might come up. They don't recognize a power of attorney.  The VA sent me a letter, called me on the phone and then started issuing paper checks every month showing my name as "spouse payee of" Cowboy.  Don't know why they didn't just keep direct depositing it.  Then when I tried to get that changed it literally took months, multiple phone calls, a visit to the State VA Commission for help, more phone calls, a form mailed in, more phone calls.  FINALLY I was directed to the right place and they got it set up for direct deposit.  Well, apparently that triggered an audit because the whole thing was handled incorrectly by whomever way back when.

We met with an agent yesterday at the home.  They wanted to see Cowboy and I had to produce his ID, my ID, answer a whole bunch of questions (like how much education I had), and provide them with our income, liabilities, assets, etc.  All of this is in place because of all the fraud there is out there, which is so sad.  Actually, he was very nice, said I kept excellent records, etc.  Cowboy just sat there and didn't really get any of it.

After the agent left and Cowboy had his lunch we started back to his room.  He asks me "Are you through with work for the day?"  He must have been in the past somewhere, I haven't worked in years.  I just said yes and we went on to his room.  I got him settled for a nap and headed back home.

This morning I went to a neighborhood ladies breakfast and then to Home Depot where I bought some flowers and soil.  Then to the grocery store and home.  Looking forward to sunshine and puttering around the house for a couple of days.

Wednesday, April 17

Been busy the last few days !  Friday I went to a neighborhood breakfast and then took off to go see family. The traffic was absolutely horrendous.  Took much longer than the projected 3 hours.  Lots of construction and lot of cars.  Arrived rather tired.  We went out to eat at a really good mexican place but I don't remember the name now.  Then a good nights rest in my great grandaughter's bed.  She was kind enough to let me stay in it.  She is 10.

Saturday  we went to her soccer game.  She is a small girl and a little timid.  The soccer is really helping her get out of her shell.  They clobbered the other team (although there is no official score kept) and she made a goal.  She was so happy.

In the late afternoon my daughter picked me up and we went to see another grandson and a new great grandbaby that I had not previously met.  She is a little doll, not quite one.  We visited with them and then went to dinner at Olive Garden.  I am eating way too much !

Sunday I went over to Cowboy's daughter's home and had breakfast with them.  They have four children, three of them triplets.  Had a nice visit.  The kids have this WII game where you dance to the screen so is good exercise.  Seems like all of these kids stay in way too much and play with electronics rather than being out in the sunshine.  Sign of the times, I guess.

I started back about noon.  I took an alternate route and it was even worse.  It should have taken 2 hours to get back to the home to see Cowboy and it took 4 plus hours !  Great time with all but wasn't happy about the travel time.

By the time I got to the home it was after 4.  Had a nice but short visit with Cowboy.  We admired the flowers and walked around a little bit.

I didn't even want to get out of bed Monday morning but had laundry and other chores to get done.  Did that and caught up on newspapers and mail.

I went to the home yesterday and took some ant killer and 3 more zinnias to fill that bed.  We spent the morning finishing out the third box.  We left about 1/3 of it in mint and planted violets in the rest.  Hope the mint doesn't take over the bed again.  It looks real nice.   Now we just need some sunshine and a little rain.  Gil has promised to do whatever watering is needed.

I had lunch with Cowboy and visited a while.  Came back home about 2.

Last night the dulcimer group played a gig at a banquet given by the "Singers Group".  It went really well and the meal was excellent.  Wow five straight days of too much food !

Today I need to go wash the car and fill it up, drop off a donation at the local pantry.  Also plan to exercise.

Thursday, April 11

Yesterday I took the car in for an oil change.  Was going to get it washed but it was cold and rainy so that didn't happen.

I met some ladies I knew from the committee work for lunch.  We had a nice time.  Lots of laughter and I had not had a quesadila for a long time.  It was a cold and rainy day so mostly just worked on some things around the house when I got back.

Today I went to the home with the intent of finishing the planting.  I had sent an email to the activities director for "direction" but had not heard from her.  Learned today that she is out for minor surgery.  It was rather cold anyway so Gil and I decided to wait until next week to finish.  We need to know if she wants to retain the mint that is there and whether we want to fill the rest with vegetables or flowers.

Cowboy was in his room and asleep when I got there.  We watched a little TV, talked and then went to the dining room.  I had lunch with him and then we checked out the flowers that were planted on Tuesday.  It rained last night but they look good.

I plan to leave tomorrow to go visit some of the children and grandchildren.   Will stay for the weekend.  I haven't been much of anywhere so looking forward to it.  Only bad thing is the awful traffic on the interstate.

Tuesday, April 9

I met  with the roofer yesterday.  I felt quite comfortable with them.  They will be here next week to put the new roof on.  I decided not to upgrade.  It was $700 more and though is a "lifetime" roof I don't have that much lifetime left.

Today I got up early, went to Lowe's and bought soil, mulch and flowers.  I picked out some marigolds, zinnias and petunias.  Went to the home and spent almost all day in the yard cleaning up the raised beds, putting in some fertilizer infused soil and planting, mulching and watering in the flowers.  I had help from Gil, an employee at the home and about 4 of the residents.  We had a good time.  One of the fellows, Archie, had company from out of town and they took pictures.

Cowboy was really helping a lot but he got really tired and had to sit part of the time and toward the last just went back to his room and sat down.  They look really nice.  Hope most of them make it.

I was so dirty, sweaty and tired when I got home about 5 I took a shower, watched a little TV, ate some popcorn and am now going to bed.  There is a book on my bedside table.  Wonder how many pages I will read before I fall asleep?

Sunday, April 7

I was already at the home when Cowboy's daughter arrived at the home about 4 on Thursday.  It is about a 7 hour drive for her so she made good time.  Cowboy knew her and was delighted to see her.  We had a nice visit

We had dinner with Cowboy and talked to the other residents some.  I had small cupcakes for everyone and we passed them out.  I got a larger fancy one for Cowboy with one candle and lit it and he blew it out.  Then I had to make sure he didn't eat the whole thing.  I managed to get some of it and he ate about half of it.  He really enjoyed it.  What a treat !

On Friday we spent the morning going through things and letting his daughter take anything from my pile in the garage home.  She didn't bring the truck so that limited things a little bit but it was amazing how much she could get in her Impala.

In the afternoon we took the rest to the garage sale location and helped some of the folks from the neighborhood set up.  Took a couple of hours and we had a ton of stuff.  Then we covered it all with tarps and hoped for the best.

I took her to a cool restaurant called Tombstone and she had red snapper and sweet potato fries.  I had shrimp and slaw.  Good meal.  Then to bed early.

Yesterday we got up at 6 and were at the garage sale site by 7:30.  It was a lot of work but they let me handle the cash box so I had it pretty good.  We did really well, made over $900!

Then we headed out to visit Cowboy.  I decided to take the back roads and show her the countryside and the wildflowers that are blooming.  Turned out to be a bad decision.  The road was closed for repairs to a railroad crossing and we had to backtrack.  Added 30 miles to the trip.

When we got there Cowboy was asleep.  He had covered up and it was very warm in the room so he was bathed in sweat.  There were soiled clothes in the floor and in the bathroom.  I went to the desk to ask and learned he had complained of a stomach ache at lunch and ate little.   I could not get him to wake up and he would open his eyes and then close them and didn't seem to respond to anything.  I uncovered him and we sat with him a while and then left.  I called later and learned his blood sugar had fallen to 73 and they gave him a snack and then made sure he ate dinner.  He was now fine.  It gave me a bit of a scare.

This morning we got up and went back over to see him.  He was feeling fine and talked to us a little bit.  He talks very little these days and he didn't talk much today.  His daughter headed on home.  I stayed for a bit and then came on home.  Am catching up on laundry, the paper and various other little things this afternoon.

I plan to pick up soil and mulch before Tuesday and we are going to get the flower beds done.

The roofer will be here tomorrow to talk about the new roof.  I also have a session with the trainer at the gym in the morning so will be busy again the next couple of days.

Tuesday, April 2

I have done it again....gone several days without posting.  I have been busy !

My grandson and his girlfriend arrived on Saturday.  We spent quite a bit of time getting some projects completed.  Mostly computer related but he also made a path to hide a wire on a wall where I have hung an electronic photo frame, changed some lightbulbs, etc.  His girlfriend is quite pretty, tiny and smart.  She is an accountant.  I sense he may have found someone he can really care about.  I like her a lot.

Saturday night they went out to dinner and dancing and that was OK with me.  I was a bit worn out.

Sunday we went to see Cowboy.  It was a beautiful sunny day, Easter, and the mood was festive.  We sat outside for quite a while and enjoyed the warm sun.  Lots of visitors at the home.  I introduced them to some of Cowboy's "cohorts" and generally enjoyed the day.  I asked Cowboy if he knew what his birthday was and he said January 21.  Don't know where that came from.  It is actually this coming Thursday, April 4.  I asked him how old he would be and he said 44.  I explained he would be 83.  He looked a bit bewildered.

The insurance adjuster came on Friday and he said the roof was totaled.  Am going to get a new roof.  He also said about 70% of the home he had inspected were totaled.  I am kind of amazed.  They will be out next Monday after the check gets here to make the arrangements for replacement.   It is really stormy again tonight with lots of rain and possible hail.  Hope my "totaled" roof doesn't leak.

I went to see Cowboy today.  He was in pretty good spirits but is spending too much time in his room and not enough time out with the other people, at least according to the activity person.  I got to come out and sit and listen to music just before lunch.  He ate good.

I had to come back for a band rehearsal at 2.  Was tired, cranky and had a headache but enjoyed it anyway.

Talked to Cowboy's daughter today about her coming down on Thursday, Cowboy's birthday.
